Kostel Zvěstování Panny Marie (Újezdské Předměstí) Church

The Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary in Újezdské Předměstí is a remarkable historical monument located at the intersection of Petra Bezruče and Alšovy streets, approximately 600 meters southwest of Bílina's city center. Founded around 1420 as a late Gothic structure, it was transformed into a cohesive Renaissance style by the end of the 16th century. This church is notable for its architectural evolution and cultural significance, being protected as a cultural monument in the Czech Republic.

The origins of this sacred building date back to the early 15th century, during a period marked by religious and political upheaval in Bohemia, including the Hussite Wars. Initially reflecting the late Gothic style prevalent at that time, it was rebuilt into a unified Renaissance form by the end of the 16th century, indicative of broader European influences.

Architecturally, the Church features a single-nave rectangular layout with a polygonally closed presbytery. It is adorned with stucco decorations and semi-circular windows, enhancing its aesthetic appeal. Both the nave and presbytery are vaulted with lunettes and mirrors, adding to the architectural complexity. The western facade includes a main portal framed by a columnar edicule, featuring an alianční znak Lobkoviců from around 1600.

The church's interior is equally impressive, housing a main altar that exemplifies early Baroque style with its columnar architecture and bolt-cord ornamentation. This altar dates back to the late 17th century. Additionally, two side altars dedicated to the Virgin Mary and Saint Anne are present, though their images originate from the second half of the 19th century. The choir stalls, crafted in Renaissance style, date from the early 17th century, while the organ is a product of the neo-Gothic movement from the late 19th century.

Today, the Church of the Annunciation stands as a testament to its historical and architectural journey. It remains accessible to visitors who wish to explore its rich history and artistic features.
