The crucifix in Nouzov is a four-metre baroque sandstone cross on the village of Chotěšice in the district of Nymburk. The monument was erected on 16 August 1805 and since 1965 it has been recognized as a cultural monument. It represents an extraordinary provincial stonework.

The cross was created in the early 19th century. During this period in the Czech Republic, the wars of Naples took place and gradually moved from baroque traditions to classicism. In provincial areas, however, the baroque style persisted in the creation of religious monuments. The construction was financed from the costs of the religious municipality of Nouzovská.

The entire object is made of sandstone and stands on a two-stage base facing northwest. The construction includes a three-piece base and the cross itself. On the plinth there are shrafted rectangles marked: The Day. 16. Aouges. Ao.18055. The middle part of the pedestal contains the text in the period spelling: WizDwight / Cargo above God / Municipality NOWZAVSKI / Quincy vržižo,, / wane gežich / Krest. On 16 / Avgvsti / Rokv 1805. The upper part of the pedestal consists of a richly shaped ledge with volutes and ropes. Carrying an empty cartouche with remains of gilding. The peak forms a cross with a compass on its own four-sided plinth. The March of the Cross ends with a tripod and a plastic skull with legs is removed at the heel of the volute.

In the history of the memorial is recorded a renewal from 1864. Since 31 December 1965 the building has been listed in the list of cultural monuments.

The monument is located directly on the village village village in Nouzov. It is an important example of the Baroque sculpture artifact, which preserved its original form and period inscriptions. It is worth a visit as authentic proof of the stonework of the early 19th century.

Welcome to the village of Nouzov near Chotošice. Right now, you're standing in front of one of the silent witnesses of local history, who, in the middle of the village, looks like ancient times. In front of you stands a tall sandstone cross, which, in its size and appearance, immediately attracts the attention of everyone who passes through here. It is a monument that brings a sense of peace and respect to the landscape, and yet it carries details that evoke a deep interest in the past.

Stop for a moment and feel the atmosphere of this place in silence. Look at the overall shape of the monument. In front of you stands a cross with a picture of the suffering Jesus, which reaches a height of approximately four meters. The whole building is located on a fixed two-stage base, which gives it stability and increases it optically above the surrounding terrain. This sandstone colossus is not just a random element of the landscape, but an embodiment of faith and belonging to people who lived here over two centuries ago.

Let us now move back in time to the beginnings of this monument. The cross was erected in August of the year a thousand eight hundred and five, namely on the 16th of August. Imagine what this community looked like at the time, what the atmosphere was like here and what a great event the position of such a distinctive work must have been. What is most remarkable, however, is that the construction was not financed by any wealthy nobleman or distant benefactor, but by the religious community of Nouzovská itself. It was local people who decided together to create a place for prayer and contemplation in the centre of their village. This act is indicative of the great unity and deep spirituality of the people of the time, who, with their joint feather, created something that survived generations.

Now pay attention to the actual execution of the cross and its architectural elements. Note that this is a Baroque-style work, which you will find especially after rich decorating and dynamic shapes. Take a closer look at the part where the cross passes to its base. You will see a richly profiled ledge here, which is a sort of protruding edge that gives the cross plastic and elegance. Next to it are placed volumes called decorative spirals, which are typical of Baroque aesthetics and give the whole building a feeling of take-off and lightness, even if made of heavy stone.

Note also the empty cartouche, i.e. the frame field, which is used for writing or character. Although it is now empty, its presence complements the overall composition and reminds us that history sometimes carries unspoken or deleted messages.

And now we come to a detail that may be most fascinating and at the same time most disturbing in the whole monument. Take a very careful look at the heel of volume. What do you see? Right here is a plastic skull with legs. This symbol may appear frosty at first glance, but in the context of time and baroque art it has a profound meaning. Skull and bone are a reminder of the permeability of earthly life. It's a so-called memento mori, a Latin expression that encourages us to think of death, not to be afraid, but to realize the value of every moment and to direct our thoughts towards eternal values. It is a strong contrast to the cross itself, which symbolizes hope and rebirth.

When you go around the monument, think about what path this sandstone cross has gone down. Time and weather are relentless to the stone, so in the year one thousand eight hundred sixty-four it was necessary to restore it. This shows that even after a few ten years, the locals still considered this monument important and wanted to preserve it for future generations. This care paid off because in a thousand and nine hundred and sixty-five, the cross was officially recognized as a cultural monument. With this recognition, the local religious symbol has become a national object to be protected and studied.

It's fascinating that we don't know the names of the particular architects or artists who carved this cross out of sandstone. This anonymity, however, paradoxically reinforces the feeling that the cross belongs to the whole community. It is not the work of one famous name, but the result of joint effort and faith throughout the village. So you're standing in front of a monument, which in every detail is connected to the people of Nouzov.

Now try to imagine how many people have stopped their steps in these two hundreds of years at this cross. How many prayers there were, how many people here sought solace in difficult times or gave thanks for their happiness. This four-metre sandstone cross with its skull in its heel and baroque spirals is like an open book that tells us about man's relationship to faith, death and eternity.

Imagine the contrast between the silent sandstone and the noise of the world today. This monument stands here as an anchor that connects us to our ancestors. It is a reminder that even in a small village a work can be created that can survive centuries by its quality and symbolism.

Now that you have looked at all the details, from the two-stage base to the rich decoration of the ledge to the freezing symbol in the heel, I suggest you stay here for a while. Feel the silence and let the history of this place consume you. The sandstone from which the cross is made has its specific texture and colour that changes with the falling light. Watch how shadows fall on the plastic details of the corpus and volut.

This concludes our stop at the Cross in Nouzov. I hope you are interested in this short trip to the past and that you have seen not only the beauty of baroque art, but also the profound importance that this monument bears. It's a place where earthly fleeting meets the hope of something higher.

We now invite you to further explore the area. Go through the rest of the village, perceive its atmosphere, and look for the other traces of history that this landscape hides within it. Remember, every stone and every old tree can tell its own story if we just pay attention to what surrounds us.

Thank you for spending this time with us at this beautiful cultural monument. We wish you a pleasant further journey and many new discoveries while you are wandering around our beautiful places. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon, when the sun falls at an angle and the details of the Baroque sandstone and the profiling of the cross stand out better. Transport to the municipality of Nouzov is possible by car and by public funds; Check the exact routes and connections in the maps.

For the tour we recommend to take shoes suitable for walking after the bath and possibly binoculars for a detailed view of the corpus and upper part of the monument.

For the best photos we recommend to stand at sufficient distance to provide a two-stage base. The ideal light for capturing sandstone texture is during the golden hour before sunset.

Families with children can use a visit to explain the foundations of baroque art and to observe the craftsmanship of stone in the natural environment of the village.
