The cross road in Království is a sacral monument from 1859. It is located on the Stone Hill approximately 900 metres north of the village Království in Šluknovský outskirts. The complex is unique thanks to the wooden reliefs of the carver Josef May and classical chapel architecture. Since 2014 the entire building has been protected as a real cultural monument.

It was created in 1859 as the tenth cross road in the Schluknovský way. Priests P. Franz Kofer from Šluknova and P. Wenzel Karl from Království contributed to the development of the complex in the second half of the 19th century.

The area consists of 13 posts of stopping, the Chapel of Calvary, the Chapel of God's Grave, the Getseman Garden, the Chapel of the Prison of Christ and the column with the painting of the Last Supper. The significant artistic element is the wooden reliefs in the niche. They were carved then by a 31-year-old Josef May, a later major carver of the 19th century. It also includes artificial caves, the grotto of St. Peter and the grotta of St. Mary Magdalena. The Garden of Getseman contains a set of statues, including the statue of the kneeling Christ with the angel and the statue of St. John, James and Peter.

The chapel of Calvary, located at the highest point as the XII. stop, is a classical building from 1859. It has a trapezoid plan and a simple triangular shield. A stone staircase leads into the interior with a stone altar and a simple cross. The chapel of God's tomb from 1859 was the largest of the original three chapels; Now there's only part of the perimeter walls left. The Chapel of the Prison of Christ of the same year supplemented the path, but did not create its stopping. It is also destroyed, only part of the walls have been preserved.

The youngest is the New Classicist Chapel of the Whipping of Christ from 1909. It stands on a rectangular plan with a half-circle apside removed. The facade is decorated with a triangular shield with distinctive ledge and arch portal. The side walls break through semi-circular windows. The yellow facade is decorated with barefoot.

After World War II, the site was destroyed. In 2003, someone tried to steal the stone stops. The theft has been prevented and the elements have been stored elsewhere, where they are now waiting to rebuild the entire complex.

There have been successive repairs in recent years. The chapel of Calvary was completely renovated in 2010. The Chapel of Whipping of Christ underwent a complete repair in 2016 for the cost of CZK 348 000, of which CZK 200 000 contributed by the Ministry of Culture. The construction obtained a new shale roof, internal and external plaster, brick floor, ceilings and new doors and windows. The renovated chapel was festively blessed on 17 November 2016 by Schluknovský Archdeacon P. Pavel Procházka.

The cross road in Království is a valuable example of the sacral architecture and craft of the 19th century. The visit allows you to look into the history of the Šluknovský excerpt and appreciate the work of the important carver Josef May.

Welcome to Království. You have just entered a space that requires not only your eyes, but above all your attention and inner peace. You're standing in front of one of the most important sacral files in the whole of Schluknovsky. Feel this atmosphere, feel the silence that exists here, and let yourself be carried away by the feeling that you have just touched something that goes beyond everyday time. Before your eyes, there is a cross road that is not just a path in the landscape, but a living work that invites you to deep reflection and to walk through the history that is still alive.

Let's go back together to when everything started building. Imagine the year one thousand eight hundred fifty-nine. This is the year when the first foundations of this important entity were laid. At that time, it was necessary to create a place that would serve people to pray and think about spiritual values. The whole area was developed gradually and with great care. This crossroads was an idea that developed and expanded over time, and it became as rich and complex as we admire it today. It is proof of how strong human faith and the desire to create something lasting and beautiful can be.

Now pay attention to what surrounds you right now. This whole sacral file is made up of thirteen stops that will follow you all your way. Notice how this space changes and intertwine with nature. You will find here several chapels and artificial caves that give the whole place a special mystery and depth. These caves are not only part of architecture, but they create spaces for solitude and silent prayer. But what makes this place absolutely unique and unique throughout the region are wooden reliefs. When you look at them, realize how incredible a job Master Josef May had to do. His carving art is the heart of this place. Feel the fine lines, the details in the wood that can express such strong emotions. Every stop is a story told through the wood that the artist brought to life. The architecture of the chapel, especially those that were built later, gives the whole complex nobility and order. Note, for example, the Neo-Classicist style of the Chapel of the Whipping of Christ, which was built many years later, in the year one thousand nine hundred and nine. This style gives the place some elegance and harmony, which perfectly complements the entire cross road.

However, in order to fully understand the importance of this place, we also need to look at the people who have made a huge contribution to its boom. It was not just a random process, but a result of the efforts of specific personalities. The development of this site in the second half of the nineteenth century was fundamentally contributed by two men who acted as priests in this place. It was Father Franz Kofer from Šluknov and Father Wenzel Karl from Království. Their vision, their work, and their commitment to making this place important for believers and future generations made it so rich a monument. Without their tireless work, this set would probably not have such scope and such a profound impact on the surrounding landscape. And of course, we must not forget the creator of the wooden details himself, Master Josef May, whose work is today protected as a great treasure.

You may be wondering if this place has faced any dangers over the years. The history of this place is not only a history of peace and prosperity, but also a history of struggle to preserve it. In the year two thousand and three there was an incident that could have damaged this unique file irreparably. There was an attempt to steal some stonework. It was a moment when this inheritance seemed to be lost. Fortunately, however, the monument was preserved through protection and subsequent efforts. In recent years, we have seen other important steps that have helped restore this place. In the year two thousand ten a reconstruction of the chapel of Calvary took place and in the year two thousand sixteen was subsequently reconstructed the chapel of the whipping of Christ. These steps were necessary to preserve the beauty and integrity of the entire complex for all of us. Since the year two thousand and fourteen, this entire building has been officially protected as a cultural monument, which confirms its immense value to our cultural heritage.

Now we leave you with your thoughts and what you just heard. Continue along this cross road, walk between the chapels, stop by the caves and let yourself drift through the atmosphere of this place. Look at every stop, see the details of the wooden reliefs and realize that right now you are becoming part of the history of the Schluknovsky excerpt. It's a place that deserves your attention and respect. Thank you for visiting us, and we wish you a peaceful and inspiring walk this historic way.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is spring or autumn, when the weather is pleasant for walking between stops and artificial caves. Since the monument is currently in the reconstruction, we recommend prior verification of the actual accessibility of the individual parts of the file, so that your journey is not unnecessarily limited.

The location Království near Šluknova is best reached by your own car. If you are using public transport, keep in mind that the final stop can be distant and the path to the cross road itself may require a short walk along the field or forest road.

When visiting, bring with you fixed shoes with a good heel, because the terrain around stone caves and reliefs can be uneven. We also recommend light clothes layered according to the weather and plenty of drinking mode, especially in summer months, where there are fewer shade trees around.

The best places for photography are the wooden relief itself, which is a unique part of the work. The ideal light for capturing details and wood texture occurs in the morning or late afternoon hours when the sun shines at an angle and creates dramatic shadows. Observe that some parts are fenced for reconstruction, and respect the prohibition of photo photography for sensitive structures.

In the immediate surroundings, just a few minutes walk from the cross road, there is a village Království and nearby Stone Hill. For families with children this location is suitable as a short walk which combines cultural experience with nature. Children are happy to explore artificial caves and observe the surrounding countryside, while the entire route is not very demanding physically.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring brings with it awakening nature and fine, scattered light, which beautifully highlights the new details arising during ongoing work on the cross road. The atmosphere is fresh and full of hope, which contrasts with the historical weight of the place in Království. The best morning for a visit is when the air is the cleanest. We recommend choosing layered clothing because morning cooling can be a substitute for winter frost, but the afternoon can be pleasantly warm.

In the summer months, there is a strong sun and long days that offer maximum visibility, although the scaffolding can be shielded in some parts. In the main summer season, the biggest burden of visitors can be, so it is best to arrive right after opening, so that you avoid the biggest crowds and the most intense heat. Remember the high-quality headgear and plenty of water, especially if you walk through the open parts of the monument.

Autumn season offers a melancholy and quiet atmosphere that perfectly matches the spiritual character of the cross road. Golden light and morning fog create a magical scene, while falling leaves turn the surrounding landscape into a colorful carpet. Due to moisture and slippery roads we recommend to wear solid and waterproof shoes. The best time to observe color transformation is late afternoon.

Winter turns the place into a quiet and rugged landscape, where frost and short days deepen the sense of history and isolation. The atmosphere is very quiet, which is ideal for those looking for solitude, but due to ongoing restoration access may be limited in some places. In advent time and during freezing days it is necessary to have very warm and wind-resistant clothes. Always check the current opening times before travelling, which is shorter during this period.
