Lochovice (hradiště) Hillfort
The Lochovická hradiště in Hořovická horkatina near the village of the same name in Beroun county comes from the early Middle Ages. A monument from the eleventh and twelfth centuries stands on the island of the valley of the river Litavka at an altitude of approximately 325 metres and is protected as a cultural monument. The location is significant by its strategic location and long history of settlement.
The first traces of human presence in the area are evidenced by the findings of ceramics from the younger Stone Age and the younger Bronze Age to the beginning of the period of the Hallatian culture. At that time, part of the island hall could have been fortified. The Slavic castle was probably established in the tenth century; its existence is safely documented during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. There are also several settlements and burial sites in the vicinity of this period. It is assumed that the castle was used to protect trade routes leading from the middle to southern and western Bohemia.
The castle is built on an island that is bordered on the west and northwest side of the river Litavka. The eastern side defines the riverbed of a small nameless tributary, which was probably modified to form a ditch. The south side remained freely accessible. The total fortified area was seven hectares. The defense was made up of three cross walls and probably also a perimeter fortification, whose course today defines partially preserved limits.
The inner castle, the so-called acropolis, occupied an area of 1.7 hectares. It was protected by a wall about 150 metres long and a buried moat. Today, the wall is seen as an off-road wave with a height of one metre and a width of up to 15 metres. The 1831 report states that a wall of dry laid stones and pebbles was part of the acropolis. The foreshadow defined another moat with a wall, but it was carried out before 1881. The aerial shooting subsequently revealed the existence of a second front with a 200-metre fortification line which began in the east at the end of the creek gorge.
Over time, transverse walls were gradually destroyed as a result of agricultural activity. Historical sources and archaeological collections confirm that the site served to defend and manage the territory at the time of development of Slavic culture in Bohemia.
Since 1987 the castle in Lochovice has been protected as a cultural monument. Despite agricultural intervention, traces of ancient fortifications remain visible in the field.
The monument is a valuable document of early medieval settlement and strategic planning in the landscape. Visiting this place allows you to perceive traces of ancient history in the natural environment of the Horovic hill.

Welcome to the place where time stops and the earth touches the sky. You are standing in front of one of the most important historical points in this area - outside the castle in Lochovice. Before you go any further, I suggest you stop for a moment, take a deep breath and look around you. Feel the atmosphere of peace, but it carries the echo of ancient power and constant movement. Take a look at the surrounding landscape of Horovic hill and watch as it rolls down to the valley of the river Litavka. What you see before you is not just an ordinary hill or a natural high. You are standing on a strategic sharpness that has served for centuries as a firm hand and vigilante of this territory. This high was chosen not by accident; Its natural location offered a perfect view of the surroundings while providing natural protection against enemies.
To understand why this place is so special, we need to go back deep into the past. The history of this place is not only a short story, but a long series of layers that are considered to be the leaves in the time book. Even in the period of the younger Stone Age and in the context of the Hallatian culture, the first traces of human presence were visible. Perhaps even then people perceived the power of this island and sought shelter here. But the true bloom and clearly defined meaning came much later. In the tenth century, the Slavic castle was probably built here, which laid the foundations for what we will see today. Most of all, however, the fort shines in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. This was the era when its existence was absolutely undoubted and the castle played a key role in the political and military arrangements at that time.
Why would people choose this place to build such a fortified unit? The answer lies in his position. The Lochovická Hradiště was not only an isolated shelter, but a key element in the network of trade routes control. Imagine those times when a caravan of valuable goods moved on these roads. This fort could control and protect routes leading from central Bohemia to the south and also to the west. It was a place where interests clashed, where foreigners' movements were watched and the security of those who brought wealth to this country was ensured.
Now pay attention to what you can imagine looking at the very structure of this place. Although we see today mainly natural shapes and remains, the dimensions of the castle are truly stunning. The total fortified area was up to seven hectares. This is a huge space that had to be organized, guarded and maintained. The heart of the whole was the acropolis, the inner castle, which was the safest and most important part of the castle. Although most of the buildings have long since disappeared, historical records allow us to reconstruct their ascension. For example, in 1831, the existence of a wall built from dry stones was recorded in the acropolis. Try to imagine - stones that fit together so perfectly that no connecting material such as mortar was needed to connect them. This technique required incredible skill and the patience of craftsmen.
It is also necessary to remember the front that surrounded the main part of the castle. This wall, which defined the outer zones, was gradually removed and was distributed before 1881. However, this does not mean that the site loses its importance. On the contrary, it is precisely because these structures have changed over time that we can now perceive the depth of the history that took place here. Since 1987, this place has been officially protected as a cultural monument, which reminds us that we are standing on the scene of events that shaped our identity.
When you look at this landscape, you might ask who were the people who lived here. We don't know their names, we don't know their faces or their personal stories. There are no preserved chronicles to tell us about kings or great warlords connected directly to this castle. Yet here are all the unknown builders who tried to raise these walls. There are those merchants who watched with anxiety in their hearts from the walls to the road to see if enemies were advancing. There are those guards who watched in the cold nights in the sharpness and followed the shadows in the valley of Litavka. Their lives were simple, but their contribution to the stability of the region was immense. It is these unknown people who have created this monumental entity that fascinates us even after thousands of years.
But there is also a mystery that might interest you. How did this place become so important in the early Middle Ages? And how has it been kept operational for so long? The transition from the early traces of human presence to the fully-developed Slavic hrad suggests that this place had some special value in human minds that exceeded mere practicality. There's something mysterious about it that's hidden in the very structure of the earth and how people used every trace of the terrain to create an impenetrable fortress. This mystery remains part of the atmosphere you feel every step of the way.
Now I won't stop you from exploring again. I suggest you continue your walk and feel the surrounding terrain. Try to reconstruct those ancient walls in spirit and imagine what the view of the valley looked like when the acropolis was full of life. See how nature gradually takes control of what people once built and how these remnants of history blend with the surrounding landscape. The Lochovická Hradiště is a living witness of ancient times and every part of it has a story waiting for you to reveal it in spirit. Thank you for choosing to visit this place and paying attention to its history. We wish you a pleasant continuation in exploring this fascinating place.

Seasonal recommendations
Spring brings freshness and awakening nature to Lochovice. Fresh green grass begins to grow around the ruins and the first flowers appear, giving the place a fresh look. The lighting is very pleasant to capture the details of stone remains thanks to the softer sun. I recommend taking layered clothes because the morning cold can quickly rotate with heat, and prepare for variable weather. During this period the visit is quiet because visitors are not among the largest number.
During the summer season the days are the longest and the sun illuminates the entire castle intensively. Vegetation is in full bloom and high grass may seem mysterious, but also a little unclear. Because of the higher temperatures and greater interest of people, it is best to arrive first thing in the morning to avoid the greatest heat and crowds. Do not forget enough drinking water, headgear and fixed shoes suitable for uneven terrain ruins.
Autumn brings a melancholy and mystical atmosphere to this area. The morning fog covering the fort creates an unrepeatable picture and the colors of the surrounding landscape turn into shades of gold and brown. Low sun creates long shadows that highlight the relief of old structures. It is advisable to carry a waterproof jacket and high-quality shoes because the soil is wet. The best time to visit is in the afternoon when the sun best illuminates the ruins.
Winter has an impact on this historic location, strenuous and dramatic. Without the leaves on the trees, the stone remains of the castle are better visible, and frost or snow can provide a memorial to the fairy tale. The atmosphere is quiet and lonely, which will be appreciated by peace lovers. Due to short days and cold, it is necessary to choose very warm clothes and good wind protection. In the winter months there are the least people, but light must be reckoned to disappear quickly.
