Maleš is a extinct castle on Hlobok Hill in the military escape of Hradiště, district of Karlovy Vary. This historic building from the 13th and 14th centuries is protected as a cultural monument since 1964. Although there are no written sources of its creation, archaeological evidence confirms its medieval existence. Maleš is interesting in its history and architecture, although it is not accessible to the public.

The history of the castle begins in the 13th century, as confirmed by archaeological findings. The village Maleš is first mentioned in 1196 in connection with the delivery of the Mašov monastery, which suggests its importance to the region. After the castle she took over the position of the superstructure probably the fortress in Žďar, which reflects the typical procedure in the feudal system.

The Maleše architecture includes a path leading from west to a small foothold to a protected valley and moat. The castle core stood at the top of the hill, probably circled by parks as protective measures. On the southeast side, there was an off-road relic of the brick building, while the core of the damaged excavation does not contain traces of the building.

Even without written sources is history Maleše mysterious and fascinating. The remains of the masonry were still observable in the 18th century, suggesting its long-term impact on the region's landscape and history.

Today Maleš is located inside the military area and is not open to the public. Yet it remains an important cultural monument, which shows the rich history of the Karlovy Vary Region. You would visit it for its historical value and the opportunity to immerse yourself in the past of the Czech Republic, although it is physically impossible to discover its remains.

Maleš is a reminder of the feudal era in the Czech Republic and its history reflects the complex history of the region. Although we cannot physically explore this castle, its existence can be appreciated as part of the country's cultural heritage. For those interested in history and archaeology, Maleš is an attractive goal for study and inspiration.

Welcome, distinguished visitors. You've just arrived at a place that at first glance may seem subtle, but which contains a layer of centuries-old stories. You are now standing on the Hatter Hill, in an area that is part of the military retreat of the Hradiště in Karlovy Vary district. Listen now to the silence of the surrounding nature and perceive the atmosphere of this place. In front of you is the space where the castle Maleš once stood. You may be looking for tall walls, deep trenches or noble towers, but Maleš is now a so-called extinct castle. This means that time, nature, and human intervention have erased most of its visible traces. What you see in front of you is not empty space, but a silent witness to history that invites us to reflect on how fleeting even the most solid buildings of stone are. Let's stop together at the beginning of this place and try to imagine how many centuries ago it was. In order to understand the creation of the castle, we must return even further to the past than the castle was ever built. The first written mention of the village Maleš dates back to the year one hundred and ninety-six. At the time, it was a donation, that is, a donaci, to the Maštuv monastery. So imagine that at the turn of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries this place was inhabited and connected with the spiritual power of the monastery in Mašov. This early history of the village paved the way for later fortified mansions. The castle Maleš itself then began its existence in the 13th century. It is archeological findings, i.e. objects and traces in the country found by experts, that confirm that the castle really stood here at this time. The thirteenth and fourteenth centuries were an era where many similar castles were built in Czech countries, which served as administrative centres or as a safe haven for local nobility. Castle Maleš was not just an ordinary building, it was a symbol of power and control over the surrounding landscape. Now, if you look around you, try to imagine how, from this hill, from Hats Hill, the guards at the time saw visitors or enemies approaching. The strategic position on the hill was crucial for survival and defense at the time. Now pay attention to what you can perceive right now. Since Castle Maleš has basically disappeared, I will not invite you inside the halls because they no longer exist. Instead, focus on the terrain itself. Notice the shape of the hill and the way the ground floats beneath your feet. The truth about the architecture of the castle remains hidden in these parallels of terrain and the remains of masonry, which were observable until the eighteenth century. Although we do not see monumental walls today, we perceive a space that was once carefully defined. The architects who designed Castle Maleš remained in the anonymity of history, we don't know their names, but we know their craft through how they could use the natural height of Hats Hill to create a safe fortress. When we think about the people who lived here, we have to admit that the history of castle Maleš is full of white places. We don't know the specific names of the knights or nobles who ruled here between the 13th and 14th centuries. And it is in this ignorance that there is a spell. Maleš is not only about specific personalities, but about the fate of one whole place. Imagine everyday life in this castle, the sound of horse-forging, the noise of the breeze from the Karlovy Vary region, and the quiet conversations in the rooms that only the wind inhabits today. It is fascinating to think that even so important an object, which was the center of the world for the locals in some Middle Ages, has gradually become invisible. Here we come to one of the most interesting parts of the story of castle Maleš. Notice how strange the fate of this place is. The castle gradually faded and its masonry was visible until the eighteenth century. This means that hundreds of years after they flourished, the remains of the walls that resembled the former glory still stood here. But then there was a process of total extinction. For many years, the castle was forgotten until historians and protectors saw it again. In the year one thousand nine hundred sixty-four, Maleš was officially declared a protected cultural monument. It's paradoxical that the state protects a place where almost nothing costs. But that's what Maleš is. We protect the memory of the castle, we protect the archaeological strata and we protect the very history of the military escape of Hradiště, which in the past limited access to many people, but also paradoxically helped to preserve this space from modern built construction. The mystery remains the exact cause of the castle's demise. Why did Maleš stop being used? Was it a result of political change, economic decline, or perhaps some forgotten conflict? The answer lies deep in the earth, in those archaeological findings that tell us the story of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Every stone that remains here, and every trace in the soil is like a word in a book we're still learning to read. Now, I want to invite you to take a slow walk around. Feel the silence and try in spirit to reconstruct the shape of the castle as it looked at the time of its greatest glory. Take a look at the horizon and imagine how castle Maleš tied into a whole surrounding village and monasteries like the Mašov monastery we talked about at the beginning. This space is not just a set of data and years, it is a place where nature meets human ambition and where time eventually prevails over a stone. Thank you for accompanying me on this short journey through time. I hope that you have felt respect for this quiet place and that you are fascinated by the secrets of the extinct castle Maleš. Now you can quietly explore the surroundings of Hats Hill, suck clean air and let your fantasies finish what history has deleted. I wish you a pleasant rest of the day and a pleasant continuation of your wandering around the beautiful places of our region. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

Best time to visit Maleše is in the spring or autumn season when vegetation is best visible and the weather usually favourable. This castle complex offers views of the surrounding landscape, which are overshadowed by denser tree leaves in summer.

Transport to Maleše can be facilitated by the use of a passenger car or public transport, and a specific connection should be verified in the current route search engine. Remember that Maleš is located inside military territory, so check availability for ordinary visitors before visiting.

Photography in Maleši offers several interesting perspectives. The best light for photos is usually in the early morning or late afternoon when the sun is lower in the sky and shading brings dramatic effect on the ruins of the castle. In particular, special views offer the top of the Hat Hill, from which the view of the surrounding landscape opens.

Around Maleše can be visited by the historic place Hradiště nad Neženka, which is available for a distance of approximately 30 minutes. Spring: During the spring season Maleš is lit by sunlight, which shines on the stones of the castle ruins and creates an attractive atmosphere. Flowers begin to bloom around the monument, which gives space to life and color. Visitors can expect a moderate crowd load because people often come out for walks after spring. It is recommended to wear clothes suitable for a slightly warm day and a possible shower such as wide gloves and light jacket. The best time to visit is in the afternoon when the sun illuminates the castle and highlights its historical beauty.

Summer: In summer Maleš becomes a popular place for tourists due to ideal weather. The sunny days bring long and bright afternoons that allow detailed tours of the castle. Nature is in full bloom, which increases the attractiveness of the visit. Summer also brings a higher crowd load, especially in the middle of the day. It is recommended to visit the castle early in the morning or late in the afternoon to minimise contact with other visitors and avoid the hottest hours. Don't forget the protective sunglasses, UV cream and plenty of drinking water.

Autumn: Autumn brings Maleš an atmosphere full of quiet and calm. The leaves of trees turn into living colors, which gives the castle ruins a romantic view. Sunshine days are warm, but at night the weather usually gets colder. The crowd load is lower during autumn months than in summer, which allows for a more comfortable tour. It is recommended to wear layered clothing in order to adapt to changes in temperature during the day and night. The best time to visit is this afternoon when the weather is the hottest.

Winter: Winter Maleš offers a completely different view with snow covered with landscape and freezing evenings. Sunshine in winter days joins the castle shards, creating a unique atmosphere. The crowd load is minimal and the visit can be very quiet. It is important to dress warm because the weather can be cold with high risk of ice cream. Don't forget the tight shoes for better grip and protection against snow or glaciers. The best time to visit is in the afternoon when the sun increases the temperature and allows comfortable walks around the walls.
