Městská zvonice ve Vimperku Belfry

Městská zvonice ve Vimperku, located in the district of Prachatice, is one of the most significant monuments of local cultural heritage. This six-storey prism structure, built at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, is a key part of the urban monument zone, announced in 1990. The bell tower boasts its historical significance and architectural elements that distinguish it as one of 50 protected buildings in Vimperk.

The creation of the town bell tower was linked to the period of the greatest flowering of the village, which in 1479 was promoted by King Vladislav Jagellonsky to the city. This historical context reflects a stable and prosperous period of Bohemia under the rule of the Jagellonian Dynasty, when trade in the region developed dynamically. At that time Vimperk was already surrounded by city walls and next to the bell tower stood the Church of Visitation of the Virgin Mary, which had undergone a significant adjustment around 1500.

The architecture of the bell tower is characterized by its late Gothic original style. Although only a few building elements have been preserved to date, such as stone lining of the entrance and a plinth with a gothic cordon ledge, its history is rich in change. After the fire in 1861 the bell tower was restored, which included the installation of new wooden structures floors and roof. Another reconstruction took place in 1909, when clock was installed on the tower from the Prague workshop L. Hainz.

The city bell tower is interesting, especially the oldest of them, named after the Virgin Mary Auxiliary Maria Hilf, cast already in 1419. This bell survived all the following centuries in Vimperk and was again ceremoniously suspended after repairs in 2010. The bell returned to manual operation, which contributes to the authenticity of this historical object.

The ownership and administration of the bell tower have undergone several changes. At the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, the rulers of Vimperk Kaplířová from Sulevic, who left their manor to Malovci in 1494. In the 16th century, the business in the region came to the top thanks to the Rožmberk patronage. These changes affected not only the economic but also the cultural development of the city.

Today the town bell tower in Vimperk is open to the public during the selected days of the summer tourist season. The reconstruction in 2021 enabled more frequent tours, which increases its attractiveness as a tourist destination. A sculpture of a large two-handed sword on the east side of the tower reminders of the victims of the First World War, adding another layer of historical memory.
