Městské opevnění v Mohelnici is a late Gothic fortification system from the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. From the original complex there was one gate, two bastions and sections of the wall with a total length of approximately 400 metres. These remains have been protected since 1958.

The right to stone walls and moat was acquired by Mohelnice in 1322 by Bishop Konrad I. with the consent of King John of Luxembourg. Until 1389, however, the city was protected only by mobs, moats or wooden palisades. Only the Bishopric Castle and the Fortress of Vilem of Milichin had stone fortifications at that time. The construction of the city walls began only at the end of the 15th century, after the city had cost-recovery after the destruction of the ravaged geese.

Fortification was performed in late Gothic style. Around 1730 it consisted of the main wall of the castle, a park, seven baskets, four gates, ditches and valleys. The main wall of the quarry stone was 100 to 180 cm wide and up to 8 metres high. The preserved fragments today are usually 2 to 4 metres, up to 7 metres. Some sections were gradually harnessed with brick and in the 21st century they were supplemented with brick tableware.

Of the original seven dusty towers registered in 1727 by chronicler Andreas Ludwig Keller, only a semi-cylindrical north bastion remained (today part of the house No. 939 at the Church Square) and a park bastion in the street Circular. The city closed four gates with guards and bakers' houses. The upper gate is today represented by the 1714 Baroque pillar. After the Lower Gate, which was dismantled in 1851, the pillar with the coat of arms of Bishop Stanislav II Pavlovský remained. The Loštice gate is commemorated by a bakery house and archaeological findings from 2003 and 2018. The only fully preserved is the Water Gate from 1540. Adding to the bakery house at the Gate of 1597, which decorated the statues of St. Donat and St. Florian.

The tower at St. Thomas' church from Canterbury, which served as a voice, was also involved in the defence system. It was created in the first half of the 14th century, destroyed during the Hussite wars and completed until 1480. It gained its current height of 72 metres in reconstruction in 1876.

The completion of the walls dates back to 1540. During the Thirty Years' War, the gates were equipped with iron bars and drawbridges. But this did not prevent the fire that the Swedes set up in June 1642. Another devastating fire occurred in 1739. Since the end of the 18th century, the city administration sold the walls as building material and in the years 1910 to 1911 there was extensive demolition in the framework of rendering.

The current situation is the result of the 2004-2017 reconstruction. They hit the park bastion, the Water Gate, the wall walls, and the house with the bastion. The monument offers a view of the historic city interface and its original defense system.

Městské opevnění v Mohelnici is a valuable witness to medieval and modern fortification. Visiting these remains helps to better understand urban development.

Welcome to Mohelnice. You are standing in front of one of the most important witnesses of the ancient times, which forms an inseparable part of this city and its historical identity. Before your eyes, the remains of the city's fortifications stand, which for centuries served as a shield for the inhabitants and as a symbol of their strength and independence. Although these walls now act in peace and harmony, in their stones is written the story of a constant struggle for security, power and the very survival of this place. Feel the atmosphere in which the calm of the present coincides with the echo of ancient events. Look at these remains and try to imagine what the city looked like at a time when these walls were high and impenetrable.

To understand why these walls are standing here, we have to go back to the Middle Ages together. You might think the city has been fortified with stone since its inception, but the truth is much more interesting. By the end of the 14th century, the city relied only on what was quickly built and what the surrounding nature offered. It was protected by walls, trenches and wooden palisades. It was functional, but compared to later construction, it was only temporary protection that could not resist strong attacks. The break occurred in the year 13, 22nd, which is a date that is absolutely crucial to Mohelnice. This year, the city gained the most important: the right to its own stone walls and water moat. This right was granted by Bishop Konrad first with the consent of King John of Luxembourg. Imagine the significance of it - to get such a power was to move to a higher league of cities that was truly safe and able to become a solid fortress.

Now pay attention to what's right in front of you. Even though the wall system has been changing over the centuries and part of its original width and height have been lost, you can still see the force and extent of the engineering at the time. In front of you, a wall of about 40 metres is spread, which is part of the original, much larger system. Feel the mass. The main wall was built of quarry stone and its construction was truly impressive. It had a width between 100 and 100 centimeters and its height reached up to eight meters. That was an impenetrable obstacle to anyone who tried to invade the city. Feel the structure of this stone, its texture and how firmly it is anchored in the crown of the earth. Within this residual system, you can see one gate and two bastions that form the backbone of today's visible fortification. These baskets were not only an ornament, but strategic points where the defenders could defend themselves against the enemy. One of the key points of the whole system was the Water Gate, the completion of which according to historical records per year dates to the year fifteen hundred forty.

The history of these walls is not only the history of stone, but the history of people whose decisions directly influenced the face of Mohelnice. Names like Conrad first or King Jan Lucemburský are not just names in textbooks, but people who allowed this city to grow and prosper safely. But the walls had to face not only political decisions, but also the destructive forces of war. In the year sixteen hundred forty-two, a great trial came for the city. The Swedes who were in our countries at the time caused a devastating fire in June. Imagine the horror of flames threatening not only houses, but the very foundations of urban life. The fortification at that time played a crucial role in how the city was able to grow again and form again after these tragic events.

You might be wondering how simple wooden palisades became such a monumental stone structure. There is a certain mystery of human effort and gradual evolution of defense. How did the attack tactics change and how did architecture have to change to face them? The transition from wood to stone was a huge investment that required not only a huge amount of money, but an enormous amount of work and expertise. Yet in history, the names of the particular architects who designed and built these walls have been lost. But their work remains, which is still a tangible reality for us today and which you can see directly by your presence here. This construction is proof that even if the names of the creators are forgotten, their work can survive for centuries.

Today, these remains are protected as a cultural monument, allowing us to look at them with respect and attempt to understand the past. Since the year one thousand nine hundred fifty-eight, these walls have been protected by the law so that future generations can experience the same impression that you are experiencing right now. We will leave you now with your thoughts and the sight of these old walls. I suggest you continue on the streets of the city and look for other traces of history that are hidden in Mohelnice. Every stone and every alley has a story. Thank you for spending time with this monument. We wish you a beautiful and inspiring walk through the city.
