If you look around you now, you will realize how brilliantly the space has been chosen to create this mansion. You are on a flat edge, which naturally stands out above the confluence of the River Stropnice and the New Hradi creek. This geographical location was the most important factor in the Middle Ages. The water in the streams served as the first and very effective defensive line, which made it difficult for the enemy to access the walls themselves. Feel the atmosphere of this place and try to imagine how there were guards here centuries ago watching every movement in the surrounding landscape.

Let's go back in time together now. The first written mention of Nové Hrady as a city dates back to 1279. It was during this period, probably still in the 1930s, that the fortification itself was created. At the time, it was not just a question of prestige, but of survival. The city needed safe space for its inhabitants and merchants, and therefore a complex system of walls and deep moats was built. These structures were intended to ensure that only those who were welcome could enter the city. But history shows that even the strongest walls can be threatened. As early as the end of the 14th century, between 1390 and 1399, the city had to make extensive repairs to the castle structures, indicating how difficult it was to keep such an extensive defense work in perfect condition.

Now pay attention to what you see right in front of you. Although the walls are only partially preserved today, you can still read the logic of medieval construction. Note that the fortifications were not only a wall, but a whole system, which included an external moat and a valm. If you think about the thickness of the wall, you'll find that its width was about a hundred and fifty centimeters. Imagine this massive layer of stone and mortar that was meant to withstand the attacks of the attackers. It is fascinating that although we know the width of the wall, its exact original height and the way in which it was ended, it remains a secret that cannot be clearly verified. It is this uncertainty that gives the place some charm. Look also at the Lower Gate that stands before you. It is one of the most important elements that we have seen to date. But its current form is not medieval, but it comes from a large reconstruction in 1831. So even if it's newer, you still feel the role of the gateway that once controlled the flow of people and goods entering the city.

But when we look at the history of this place, we find that the walls were not only silent witnesses to peace, but also participants in dramatic events. Nové Hrady has been the target of several devastating attacks over the centuries. One of the strongest came in 1425 when the city was conquered by campers during the stormy Hussite wars. It was a time when the old world collapsed, and the walls they were meant to protect became a place of bloody conflict. But that wasn't all. A few decades later, in 1467, the city hit another tragedy. The attack was led by Zdeněk Konopišťský ze Šternberka, which not only attacked the city, but also fired. Imagine the chaos, the flames rising to the sky and the desperate attempts of the people to save their homes to protect these walls. Other important men, such as Petr Vok z Rožmberka, have been associated with the city and its fortification, whose name is deeply rooted in the history of the region.

Now I want to take you to one of the interesting things that brings out our imagination. There is an old vedute, a 1712 landscape painting that shows us Nové Hrady as it looked over 300 years ago. On this painting, on the north side of the city, two prism towers with a battlements are embalmed. Cimburi are the typical teeth on the upper edge of the walls that the shooters could hide behind. If you look around today, you won't find these towers. They disappeared into the violación of time, reconstructions or were demolished. It's a little historical mystery. Where exactly were they? Why were they removed? When did the menacing guard towers become just a memory of the screen? It's these invisible traces of the past that make walking around walls detective.
