Town fortifications in Slavonice form an important set of preserved fortification elements, which includes a park wall, bastion and two gates. The system was created mainly in the 15th century and later underwent Renaissance modifications. To date, a substantial part of the walls have been preserved, especially on the north and east sides of the city.

The historical context of the fortifications is linked to the development of urban culture in the 15th and 16th centuries, when the headquarters had to adapt to improving siege technology. The transition from late goth to renaissance humanism in Slavonice manifested itself not only in defence function but also in aesthetic concepts of buildings.

It is an architectural system originally Gothic, which was renaissance modernised in the first half of the 16th century. Three corner bastions were preserved from the elements: oval northwest, oval northeast (now part of house No. 226) and five-sided southeast. In the north section you can find remnants of the prism tower behind the houses no. 502 and 503 and remains of the semi-cylindrical bastion behind the house no. 487. East of the extinct Austrian gate, the rest of the inner wall was preserved.

Two city gates are significant dominance. The Eastern Znojemská Gate, also called Jemnická, carries in the facade the coat of arms of Václav Österreicher with the year 1552 and letter sgraffiti. Its outer arch is sharp and contains a groove for the trailing grate, the inner arch is semi-circular. The North Dachicka Gate was also established before the mid-16th century. In front of it are parts of the former 15th century barbadian; its middle part was demolished in the 19th century and the rest adapted to residential houses.

In the 19th century, the gates underwent further modifications, especially after the fire. The Znojemské gate was then reduced and covered by a counter roof with low atics, Dachická gate acquired a baroque tower. The whole system is today protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

The remnants of the walls are accessible from the southeast part of Božena Nemco Street or from the corner of the Upper Square near Znojemská Gate. The tour offers an authentic insight into the development of Czech cities and their defence strategies. The Slavonic visit thus enables an immediate encounter with the history that has been printed in the form of preserved walls and Renaissance gates.

Welcome to Slavonice, a place full of history and beauty. You are standing right in front of a unique monument to our past - a city fortification that shows the rich chapters of Czech history. Take a look around and you will see the distinctive elements of the park wall, three corner bastions and two city gates that tell stories of the past century.

We'll begin by understanding the origin of this fascinating fortification. During the 15th century, the Gothic city fortification was built, which was built to protect the people and their property. This important project was partially completed around 1450 with the addition of barbacan outside the northern Dachicka Gate, which strengthened the city's defence capabilities. During the Renaissance, namely in 1550, further modernization of the walls and gates took place, which brought a new life spirit to this monument.

Now let's look at the architectural elements that deserve your attention. It is interesting to see three corner baskets - two oval and one five-sided - placed to provide the best possible supervision and protection of the city. In the facade of the Znojemská gate you can see the coat of arms of Václav Österreicher with the 1552 year, which is now one of the most distinctive features of this monument.

Let's dive into history and discover the personalities associated with this place. Václav Österreicher, an influential figure from the 16th century, was a key player in completing the Znojemsk Gate. His coat of arms, which you now see on the facade, is a testament to his influence and participation in the city's development.

There's an interesting thing that might interest you. Although a significant part of the walls were preserved only on the north and east side of the city, their history and architecture today allow us to imagine life in Slavonice during the early modern era. This monument is like a book open to exploration, offering insights into the past.

I suggest you explore other parts of the city and discover more historical hiding places. Slavonice has much to offer - from cultural events to natural beauty. Whether you choose to take another tour or just for a quiet moment in the garden, this room of history will surely address you.

Thank you for your visit and we hope you will return to your discovery. I wish you a comfortable walk in Slavonice!

Tips for visitors

I recommend a tour of the walls for the morning hours, when the sun pleasantly illuminates Renaissance facades of houses and historical masonry, which is ideal for quality images without sharp shadows. You can easily reach Slavonic by car or public transport, and check the current connection in the search engine. Take with you comfortable shoes suitable for walking on historic tiles and in case of sunny weather don't forget the headgear. The best places for photography can be found around preserved baskets and gates, where the contrast between ancient fortification and urban architecture will stand out. For families with children, walking through walls is an interesting adventure, which can be combined with a visit to the Upper Square, where children can admire the decorative shields of houses.
