The ruins of Michalovice castle lie above the Jizera river, approximately three kilometres northwest of Mladá Boleslav. The castle was founded in the second half of the thirteenth century by the widespread Markwart family. It stood on a steep triangular promontory at an elevation of two hundred and fifty metres. Since nineteen sixty-seven it has been protected as a cultural monument.
The lords of Michalovice first appear in period documents in twelve eighty-one and belonged to very significant noble families. One of the first known members was Jan the First of Michalovice. He was renowned as a skilled participant in knightly tournaments and was celebrated in an laudatory poem by Ulrich of Freiberg. He competed in tournaments not only here in Bohemia, but also in the Rhineland and in France.
Jan's descendants mostly sided with the ruler and were among the leaders of Bohemian nobility. The family line ended in fourteen sixty-eight, when Jindřich Kruhlata of Michalovice fell in the battle at Turnov. His sister Magdaléna was married to Jan Tovačovský of Cimburk the Younger. The Tovačovskýs, however, did not reside in the castle nor maintain it. Already by fifteen thirteen, Michalovice was written about as an abandoned and desolate castle.
The quadrangular outer ward was protected by a moat. We do not know its structures; only a small piece of masonry has survived in the southwestern corner. The path to the castle core led across a second moat and a narrow palisade onto the courtyard. Its dominant feature is the preserved tower called Putna. Behind it stood a palace in the shape of the letter L, and in its southern wall remained the remains of two fireplaces. The rear and both sides of the core were surrounded by a wide palisade.
The Putna tower originally had two entrances. The first led to the first floor, from where one descended through an opening in the floor to the ground floor. That is more than the previous record of the tower in the German municipality of Gau-Weinheim, which the Guinness Book of Records lists among unintentionally tilted structures. In nineteen thirty-five, workers from the Czechoslovak Railways connected the two parts of the split tower. Directly beneath it they found a bag containing approximately four hundred and seventy silver coins from the time of the Thirty Years' War.
