Národní dům Hotel building

The National House in Starý Bohumín, which is also called today the House Under the Green Oak, is an Art Nouveau building from the beginning of the twentieth century. It originally arose as a city hotel. It stands on today's Freedom Square, not far from the Odra River and the Czech-Polish state border, at the Starý Bohumín border crossing.

The history of the place, however, goes back much further. The building stands where there was once a coaching inn from the seventeenth century. According to legend, Polish King John the Third Sobieski spent one night there. In the beginning of the twentieth century, the house was rebuilt into its present Art Nouveau form. Until the end of the Second World War, it bore the German name Grüner Baum, which means Green Tree. After the war, it received the name National House. Later, discos were held in it.

Gradually, however, the house fell into disrepair. A turning point came with extensive reconstruction, which took place from two thousand thirteen to two thousand fifteen. At that time, the building also received a new name, the House Under the Green Oak.

Today, a hotel operates in it again, this time a three-star hotel. It has a restaurant and a hall where social events are held. The basement is occupied by a beer and music hall. On the ground floor there is an information centre and the Bohumín city museum. Among its interesting features is a collection of fifty-four coins from the years sixteen sixty to eighteen sixty. The coins were found during the renovation of a nearby statue of John of Nepomuk. Besides them, the museum offers further historical and ethnographic exhibitions.
