Every stone you see here, and every angle of these remnants of the castle walls tells the story of protection, power and the gradual passing duration of human structures. Feel the atmosphere of this place, feel the calm that exists here, but at the same time imagine the excitement and constant vigilance that this castle had to show in the past.

To understand what you see before you today, we must go deep into the past with you until the first half of the 13th century. This is the time when the first trees started to cut down and lay the first foundations for what was then a new and ambitious project. There was a Romanesque castle complex that was supposed to serve as a solid defensive point. The first written clues that allow us to speak with certainty about this place are from 1240. The first name Fridrich z Nejdku appears in these documents. He and his family were probably the first to see a safe haven and a power center in this rocky height. Imagine the world back then, the world of knights and the constant building of fixed castles that were meant to protect property and life.

Now pay attention to how the fate of this castle changed over the centuries. The castle Nejdek was not just a static building, it was a living organism that was changing along with politics and power clashes back then. Let's move a century further. In 1341 there was a fundamental change when Petr Plik won this castle in the fiery of King John of Luxembourg himself. This castle immediately elevated to a whole new level of importance. It was no longer just a local castle, but part of a wider royal network. Imagine the excitement and weight of responsibility that Petr Plik had to bear when he became the holder of such a strategic position.

Over time, the castle became part of other great stories. In 1410, the castle came into the hands of the Cheb Purkrabi, which was Hanuš Forter. Every new personality who came here left a mark, even though today we see their names as more of a history book. We see the shadows of many people like Janek Maleřík, Mikuláš a Hanuš Frasové, or Jindřich Kopp z Tannberka. Each of them was probably deciding important things here, each of them looking at the same River Rolava as you are looking at now.

If you raise your eyes now and look at it, as much as it dominates the whole view, your eyes are likely to reach the Black Tower immediately. It is undoubtedly the most significant building element of the entire ruins. This tower is not just a stone element, it is a symbol of endurance. You know, although the castle was gradually changing, this tower had undergone a major transformation at the beginning of the 16th century. That's when Lorenc Šlik rebuilt it. The Šlik family, including Matyš, Jerona and Stephen, was associated with significant events at this time and their influence on architecture and the character of the site was evident. It is through their work and reconstruction that the tower has acquired its specific appearance, which is now addressing you with its strength.

Now, however, we must ask why this important place has become a ruin. Why did a castle that was once a symbol of power become an object that we now admire as a historical monument? The answer lies in a time that flows relentlessly. In 1602 the castle was no longer inhabited. Gradually, year after year, castle walls were subservient to nature. Instead of the shouting of soldiers and the rustling of the nobles' clothes, there began to reign the silence and noise of the wind. The castle slowly turned into a ruin, a monumental memory of what no longer existed.

Although the castle was destroyed as a inhabited place, part of it remained unwavering. The black tower we talked about became the guardian of this place. It is fascinating that even when the castle became a ruin, this tower kept its dignity. Since 1964, this tower has been protected as a cultural monument, which ensures that even in the future we can stand here and watch its shadow.

The interesting thing that may interest you is the contrast between what was once a living and busy center and what is now a silent ruin. The Black Tower served as a symbol of stability in a constantly changing world. While the rest of the castle fell apart, she remained.
