Nový hrad u Kunratic is a ruin of the Gothic royal castle located in Prague's city area Kunratice. Built at the beginning of the 15th century, this is an important historical place associated with the last days of the life of Czech King Václav IV. Protected as a cultural monument since 1965, it offers visitors an accessible experience with its rich history.

Ordered for construction by King Wenceslas IV in 1411 as a resting place for a monarch, he originally wore the name Wenzelstein. However, this term has not been preserved and is generally known as New Castle or New Castle near Kunratic. Placed in the woodland environment of the Kunratic Forest in the sharpness, he had a strategic advantage.

The architecture included two palaces and a prism tower with two gates. The unfortified front was separated from the castle itself by another wall with a moat. The remains of the walls show traces of Hussite fleas from the siege in 1421. In the 18th century, the chapel of St. John Nepomuk was built on site, which served until the end of this century.

After the death of Václav IV, who died in the castle in 1419, it became the key point of the Hussite Revolution. In 1421 he was besieged and conquered by a freshman, which led to his destruction and burning. After these events, no one was interested in restoring the castle, and its remains were later used for building nearby objects.

What's interesting is the fact that King Václav IV. died in the castle after a fit of rage caused by the defenestration of his New Town conches. This event was the first step towards the Hussite Revolution, which underlines the historical importance of the castle.

Today Nový hrad u Kunratic is freely accessible to tourists after the blue tourist brand. In 2012-2013, extensive remediation of preserved remains took place, during which the masonry was statically secured and a new wooden bridge was built over the neck moat. The castle is also the place of the annual run Great Kunratic, where the output to the castle is considered the hardest part of the race.

Visit Nový hrad u Kunratic and appreciate its historical value. This monument bears traces of the past, important for understanding Czech history. It is a place where people can learn about the life and death of Václav IV, as well as the important events of the Hussite Revolution. Visiting this ruin is not only a way to the past, but also an opportunity to explore the beauty of the Kunratic Forest and its surroundings.

Welcome to the silence and tranquility of the Kunratic. Stop for a moment, take a breath in the scent of the surrounding trees and look ahead. Right now, you are facing the remains of a place that once served as a refuge of one of the most important but controversial Czech rulers. What you see today as silent ruins in the green was once Nový hrad u Kunratic, a royal Gothic building that entered history as a symbol of a royal escape from reality. Feel the atmosphere of this place where nature meets history today and where every stone tells the story of power, loneliness, and a violent end.

Let us now return in time more than six hundred years back to the beginning of the fifth century. It is the year of the thousand four hundred eleven and the Czech king Václav the fourth, a man with a deep perception of beauty, but also with a constant feeling of unrest, orders to build the castle right here, on this forested sharpness. Why here? Václav sought a place to rest, a place where he could escape the hustle and bustle of the court, political schematics and constant pressures that accompanied his government. The castle was supposed to be his private asylum, a place where he could think calmly and regenerate his powers. Originally, this castle was to bear the name Wenzelstein, which is a direct reference to the King's name. It is fascinating that although this name was official, it did not end up being preserved in folk language and we now know it simply as the New Castle.

Now pay attention to what you see around you. Even though castle walls today are only a shadow of their former size, you can still read the spirit of Gothic architecture. Look at the way the construction was integrated into the field. The castle was built on a sharpness, which was a strategic choice at the time, which guaranteed natural defence while providing a high view of the surroundings. Look at the remains of the masonry and see how powerful these walls once were. Although we do not know the names of the particular architects who carried out this project, it is clear that it was a construction with a royal claim. Notice how the ruins naturally intersect with the surrounding landscape. The Gothic style that dominated here emphasized verticality and, in combination with the surrounding trees, created the impression of monumentality, which should have highlighted the status of its owner.

The key character of this place is, of course, King Wenceslas the Fourth. Imagine him walking around in the last years of his life. This castle was not just a stone building, it was an area of freedom for him. Right here, in the embrace of the kunratic forest, the king spent his last days. History, however, is often cruel and the place to rest has become the final resting place in the full sense of the tego word. It was here, in the year one thousand four hundred nineteen, that Václav the fourth died. His death here closed one chapter of Czech history and at the same time opened the door to the tragic fate of the castle itself.

After the king's death, dark clouds began to gather over the castle. A voluntary escape from the city has turned into an isolation that is dangerous in times of social upheaval. Only two years after the death of the ruler, in the year one thousand four hundred twenty-one, the castle became the object of hatred and anger. The Prague, driven by the political and religious differences at the time, conquered and burned the castle. Imagine the contrast that must have existed at the time. The silence of the forest, which the king loved so much, was suddenly overthrown by the screams, the crackling of fire and the thunder of falling glances. The castle that was supposed to be a symbol of royal peace was destroyed in flames. Since then New Castle has never returned to its former beauty and has gradually turned into the ruin that we are discovering today.

At this point, you may be interested in one question that accompanies many visitors. Why was the castle so drastically destroyed if its chief resident, the king, was not alive? The answer lies in the symbol. The castle was not only a building in the eyes of the time adversaries, but a symbol of the old order and royal power, which was seen as being torn from the needs of the people. So the destruction of Wenzelstein was an act of political and social expression. It is fascinating to think that the ruin that we admire today for its romantic atmosphere was a place of deep conflict and passion at the time of its creation and fall.

For many years, the castle slept in oblivion, until in the year one thousand nine hundred sixty-five it was officially included in the list of cultural monuments. This act recognised its immense historical importance and ensured its protection for future generations. Today the castle is freely accessible, which makes it a unique place where you can enter history without barriers.

Now that you know the story of this place, I will invite you to further explore. Walk slowly through the space of ruins, touch the cold stone and try to imagine what the castle looked like in a thousand four hundred eleven when it was full of its glory. Notice how the light has swept through the leaves of the trees and is touching the remains of the walls. Let yourself be guided by your intuition and perceive the silence that today rules where the voices of the royal court once sounded and later the cry of the conquerors.

Nový hrad u Kunratic is a reminder that nothing is permanent, but that something beautiful and inspirational can also emerge from debris. It is a place for reflection, for a peaceful walk and for consideration of the fleeting power. I hope this short trip to the past has helped you better understand the importance of this hidden corner of Kunratic.

I wish you a pleasant rest of the way and many other discoveries in our beautiful woods. Thank you for your attention, and I will bid you farewell to these silent witnesses of history. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is the late afternoon when the sun creates interesting shadows on the ruins and the light is softer. The most suitable places for photography are overlooking the island, where the castle can be captured in the wider context of the surrounding landscape.

Since the road leads through natural terrain, it is necessary to take with you quality hiking shoes and suitable clothes.

Families with children should have enough drinking water and snacks to make walking in the forest pleasant for all family members.

Around the castle you can explore the Kunratic forest, follow the course of the Kunratic stream or visit the Kunratic quarry.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring In spring, the ruins of the New Castle awaken along with the surrounding countryside. The light is fine in this period and the colors of the fresh green contradict the grey stones of the castle walls beautifully. It's the perfect time for nature lovers to watch blooming vegetation. For a visit I recommend choosing the morning hours when the air is freshest. Clothes should be laminated, because morning cold can still be felt after noon.

Summer Summer months bring a hot atmosphere and intense sunlight that highlights the structure of old ruins. In the main summer season there are more people in place, therefore it is best to arrive immediately after opening or in late afternoon hours when temperatures are falling. Don't forget the sun hat, enough drinking water and light, breathable clothes. Shadows between stone blocks provide a pleasant shelter from heat.

Autumn Autumn visit offers a melancholy and quiet atmosphere that is perfectly suited for viewing historical ruins. Golden light and color palette of leaves create perfect conditions for photographers. Since the surrounding area may be moist and the fallen leaves may be slippery, it is necessary to have firm shoes with good grip on your feet. I recommend a visit in the afternoon, when the sun best illuminates the colored crowns of trees.

Winter In winter, the ruin is very raw and lonely, which underlines its historical character. The bare branches of trees and the grey sky create a quiet and still picture. At this time there are very few visitors, which guarantees maximum peace. However, it is necessary to prepare for cold, so choose a very warm and waterproof jacket. Due to the short days, plan a visit so that you can make the tour before the sun sets.
