Obchodní dům Českého svazu výrobních družstev is a seven-storey administrative building in the centre of Prague, on the corner of Wenceslas Square and Jindřiš Street. It is remarkable with its brutal architecture and its history dating back to the 1970s.

The building was completed in 1976 and served as a department store. It was originally called Družba and was to be a specialized shopping centre for luxury goods. The interior was realized in a higher standard than normal at the time. The building has a steel construction and hanging facade with large windows and aluminum elements. The facade was divided into several parts vertically and horizontally to reduce the extent of the complex.

In the 1960s, a number of buildings were implemented in Prague in the spirit of socialist realism and brutalism. Lower houses were built on the corner of Wenceslas Square and Jindřišská Street, which were torn down in connection with the construction of the underpass and a tram transfer for the construction site. However, the regional plans of Prague from 1964 to 1971 did not foresee the creation of a commercial house in this location.

Construction work on the building started in 1971 and ended in 1976. The supplier was the State Company of Military Construction. In addition to offices and business premises, there was also a restaurant called Rostov, which was later converted into a music club in the highest part of the building. As one of the few was equipped with modern air conditioning, heating etc.

The commercial house for the Association of Czech and Moravian Production Cooperatives was originally named Družba. He was supposed to have a different role than Klista or Maja; he served for specialized purchases and for the purchase of luxury goods. Individual floors and parts thereof have been allocated to individual cooperatives; these parts were separated visually and supplemented by artistic parts from various Czechoslovak artists. Since luxury goods were to be sold here, the interior was realized in a higher standard than normal at the time. The restaurant had a glass element from Stanislav Libenský.

After 1989, the department store was renamed Krone. The first task was to adapt to the change in social conditions, the arrival of goods from Western Europe and the general change in the style of shopping in the country. Later the name changed to Debenhams and finally to DESIRRED.

The object was designed to be listed among cultural monuments, but it did not obtain this status. The first two floors of the building, including ground floor and basement (a total of four floors of seven), serve as a department store. The higher three floors then have use as offices. The premises of the mentioned Czech Association of Production Cooperatives are located here. In the basement there is a supermarket with food. In the superstructure of the circular building there is a music club Duplex, which is accessible directly from the street through its own entrance.

The entrance to the department store is possible from the ground floor and from the lobby of Mostek Metro Station (underground); Supply is possible from Henry Street. A separate entrance to the administrative part of the building is located in a similar part.

Obchodní dům Českého svazu výrobních družstev is remarkable with its brutal architecture and its history. It is remarkable as its function as a specialized shopping centre for luxury goods and its artistic decoration. It is an interesting monument that offers a view of the past and present Prague.

Welcome to the heart of our metropolis. You're standing right where history clashes with the daily movement of the city. Look at the building right in front of you. At first glance, it may act as a fixed and stationary point in busy urban traffic, but its existence is much more dynamic than it might seem. Feel this atmosphere, perceive the contrast between the historical environment and this structure that carries the reflection of an era. This building is not just walls and windows, it is a record of ambition, changes and the constant movement of time.

To understand why this building is standing right here and why it has such a look, we have to go back deep into the past. The whole process began in the year one thousand nine hundred sixty-four, when new development of this section of the city began to be considered in the framework of Prague's territorial plans. At that time, in the 1960s, a number of buildings were carried out in Prague, which were influenced by the political and aesthetic directions at the time, namely the socialist realism. Although this building comes from later times, its roots extend to this planning period. The construction itself began in the year one thousand nine hundred seventy-one. The goal was not just to build an ordinary house, but to create an important place for the Czech Union of Production Cooperatives. In the year one thousand nine seventy six, the construction was finally completed and began its service as a department store. At that time, the building was pronounced Družba. But it wasn't just another trade. It was supposed to be a specialized shopping mall that was designed for goods of higher quality, for things that were considered rare and luxurious at that time.

Now pay attention to the very form of this building. Look at her look, the way the building intertwines with the space around her. The architects behind this work were Vratislav Růžička, Milan Vašek and Vlastibor Klimeš. Their task was to create a structure that was functional, but at the same time had its own strong identity. If you look at her facade now, notice how very interesting it is. The architects worked with the lines so the building wouldn't look like one heavy meat. The facade is divided into several parts in both vertical and horizontal directions. This geometrical game creates a rhythm that the visitor's eye leads up and down the sides of the building. This breakdown adds depth and dynamics to the structure, which you can perceive from a distance.

When the building was finished, it wasn't just a building. One of the most important aspects was the quality of its internal processing. Even though you are looking at its external appearance today, it is important to know that its inner spaces were implemented in a much higher standard than was usual in our country at that time. That undercut her role as a place for the best goods. This building was basically an oasis of quality in an environment that was often limited.

The history of this place is also the history of his names. The names this building was carrying are like layers of time left on it. Once political and economic conditions began to change in our state, the identity of this place changed. In a thousand and nine hundred and eighty-nine, the first major change occurred when the building acquired a new, foreign name. Just a year later, in the year one thousand nine seventy-nine, the situation moved again and the building accepted another foreign designation. And during the same year, a thousand nine seventy-nine, another new name appeared to reflect a new era of business and openness. These changes are not just a matter of writing that has been changing over time, but a symbol of the transition from the cooperative economy to the free-market era.

What's really fascinating about this place and what might interest you is the constant contrast. On the one hand, you have a building that was created in the framework of state planning and was intended to serve a particular union, and on the other hand, you see how it became part of the global world of trade, how it changed its face according to new titles and new business strategies. It's a fascinating mystery of how architecture can adapt to constant changes in society. This building survived the transformation, survived changes in regimes and changes in economic systems, and it still stands here, still serving, and keeps us thinking about how our city is changing.

Now you can continue your journey through Prague. I suggest you stop by other buildings in this area so you can better compare the different styles and ages that have left your mark. Every building in this part of town has its own story waiting to be discovered. Thank you for spending this moment with me and paying attention to this piece of urban history. I wish you a beautiful and inspiring walk through our city.

Themed route

Obchodní dům Českého svazu výrobních družstev - entrance hall - type: architectural introduction. Imposes Art Nouveau facade and spectacular entrance space with historical ornaments, ideal for first impression and introduction to the whole complex.

Exhibition hall in administrative building - type: exposition. There are regularly exhibitions focused on the history of the cooperative movement and current projects, providing context to the origin of the building and inspiring visitors.

Internal courtyard - type: open space. A quiet place with benches and greenery allows for relaxation and observation of architectural details from all sides, easily accessible from the main hall.

Roof terrace overlooking Old Town - type: sightseeing spot. From the height a panoramic view of the historical centre of Prague will appear, a great conclusion for photography and reflection.

All points lie within one object, distances are short steps. The route is logically arranged from the entrance through the exhibition, then to rest in the courtyard and finally to view from the roof.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the building shines in fine morning light, while the surrounding streets begin to bloom. The atmosphere is fresh and full of energy. I recommend visiting a place in the morning where the air is the cleanest and the city's bustle is still mild. Clothes should be layered to protect you from variable spring weather.

The summer season brings a sharp sun that highlights clean lines of architecture. There are the most people in the centre of Prague at this time, so it is best to come very early in the morning to avoid the biggest crowds. Don't forget the comfortable shoes and plenty of fluids, because the hot asphalt in the area can be deadly.

Autumn covers the monument with golden light and fills the surroundings with coloured leaves. The overall mood is calmer and more focused on detail. It is suitable for morning or late afternoon observation, when the sun throws long shadows on the facade. Wrap up a waterproof jacket in case of sudden rain.

In winter, the construction works in a sharp and cold way, underlining its administrative character. Short days mean that the building is soon lit with lamps, which creates an interesting urban contrast with the grey sky. Dress very warm and plan a visit by noon before it starts to get dark.
