Orlová is a Silesian town in the Karviná District, in Cieszyn Silesia, in the middle of the Ostrava-Karviná coal basin. It was first mentioned in writing in 1223, and in the second half of the 13th century a Benedictine monastery was founded here; it has not survived. Coal mining began in the first half of the 19th century, and in 1922 Orlová was granted town status. After the Second World War, mining subsidence destroyed much of the old town and most of Lazy, so from 1963 a new town grew up as a housing estate in Lutyně. Surviving from old Orlová are the neo-Gothic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, a Lutheran church from 1861–1862, the Cubist town hall and the chateau park. More than 27,000 people live here.
