Petrovice u Karviné is a municipality in the Karviná District, in historical Cieszyn Silesia, north of Karviná right on the border with Poland. It is made up of four once separate villages, Petrovice, Dolní Marklovice, Prstná and Závada, which merged in 1952. The oldest recorded part is Dolní Marklovice: Marklovice is mentioned in a register from around 1305. Dolní Marklovice has the log Church of the Ascension of the Lord from 1739. Petrovice itself is first recorded in 1335 as villa Petri, that is, Peter’s village. The border with Poland here is formed by the Petrůvka stream, which flows into the Olše in Závada. The Northern Railway arrived in 1855, and Petrovice is still a border railway station today. In Prstná stands a small chateau, now a hotel. Just under five thousand people live here.
