Rychvald is a town in the Karviná District, in historical Cieszyn Silesia, right on the north-eastern edge of Ostrava. It is first mentioned around 1305 as Richinwalde; the name is of German origin and is interpreted as “by the rich forest”. Between 1575 and 1577, Bernard Barský of Baště built a Renaissance chateau here, and at the end of the 16th century he also had a stone church built, today dedicated to St Anne. Until the 19th century Rychvald was a farming village; with coal mining in the surrounding area it then became a mining community. It became a market town in 1935 and a town in 1985. The area is rich in fishponds, and the Skučák pond has been a nature reserve since 1969, important for water birds. Just under eight thousand people live here.
