Okna Castle
Okna is a captivating Baroque castle located in the village of Okna near Polepy, within the Ústecký region of the Czech Republic. Originally established as a Gothic fortress, its transformation into a Baroque structure began in the early 18th century. This site holds historical significance due to its architectural evolution and the notable figures who have owned it over the centuries.
The origins of Okna trace back to 1390 when it was first mentioned as a noble seat. Initially owned by Michalce z Nučnic and his brothers, ownership transitioned through several families, including the Pešík family in the early 15th century and Kryštof z Minic in 1454. By mid-15th century, Václav Cardo z Petrovic became a notable owner. The Jesuits acquired Okna after 1625, marking a significant shift as they commissioned its transformation into a Baroque castle between 1712 and 1717.
The architectural evolution of Okna reflects broader cultural trends during the early 18th century when Bohemia was experiencing significant development under Habsburg rule. This period saw the flourishing of Baroque art and architecture across Europe, characterized by elaborate ornamentation and grandeur. The transformation of Okna into a Baroque castle likely involved architect Octavio Broggio, although specific architectural elements from this era have largely been lost due to subsequent modifications for agricultural use.
Throughout its history, Okna has seen dramatic changes in ownership and purpose. After the Jesuits' acquisition, the site underwent significant alterations, eventually being divided into two separate parts for agricultural purposes. Despite these changes, the castle's historical significance remains intact, offering insights into the architectural and cultural shifts of the region.
Today, Okna stands as a testament to its rich history, though much of its original Baroque architecture has been altered or lost over time. The surrounding area is characterized by rolling landscapes typical of the Ústecký region, providing picturesque views that enhance the site's appeal. Visitors can explore this historical monument and appreciate its significance within the broader context of Czech architectural heritage.
Okna offers a unique glimpse into the past, reflecting both the grandeur of Baroque architecture and the practical adaptations made over centuries. Its historical layers invite visitors to explore not only the physical remnants but also the stories of those who shaped its legacy. Okna is a village near Polepy in the Litoměřice region and it houses a rebuilt Baroque castle. It was built between 1712 and 1717 on the site of an older Gothic fortress. Today, however, it resembles more of a farm building than a noble residence.
The fortress in Okna is first mentioned in 1390. The village was then divided between Michal of Nučnice, his brothers, and Lavol, a Litoměřice burgher. At the beginning of the fifteenth century it belonged to the brothers Pešík, Martin and Bohuslav of Minice. The last member of this family to reside in Okna was Kryštof of Minice. His widow Anna lived here still in 1454. A year later the fortress was already owned by the Hussite captain Václav Carda of Petrovice. He attached Okna to the Ústí estate and the fortress subsequently fell into disrepair.
After 1625 the Litoměřice Jesuits acquired the village. In addition to the dilapidated fortress, it included a brewery and a mill. At the beginning of the eighteenth century the Jesuits transferred the administration of the estate from Okna to Litoměřice and had the old fortress rebuilt as a Baroque castle. The construction was most likely directed by the builder Octavio Broggio.
The Jesuit order was abolished in 1773. During the subsequent so-called raabization, they divided the castle between two farms and adapted it for agricultural purposes. Later a hop drying kiln was built inside it.
These alterations almost erased the castle's original appearance. On the ground floor a part of the ceiling with Baroque stucco decoration has been preserved. In the second half of the twentieth century, part of a Gothic portal frame still lay in front of the entrance. It was demolished during the construction of the hop drying kiln.
