Pětipsy Chateau

Pětipsy Chateau is a historical monument located in the village of Pětipsy within the Chomutov District of the Ústí nad Labem Region in the Czech Republic. Originally established as a Gothic fortress by Fridrich z Egerberka in 1322, it was transformed into a Renaissance-style chateau around 1560 and later modified with Baroque elements in the 17th century. The chateau is notable for its rich history of ownership changes and architectural evolution, reflecting significant cultural and political shifts in Bohemia during the Renaissance period.

The origins of Pětipsy Chateau date back to 1322 when Fridrich z Egerberka constructed a water fortress on the site. This initial structure was later acquired by the Egerberg family, who maintained ownership until the late 15th century. The chateau's architectural journey began in earnest around 1560 when Jeroným Hrobčický z Hrobčic transformed it into a Renaissance-style edifice. Subsequent modifications included Baroque enhancements by the Thun family, who enclosed the courtyard with an eastern wing and replaced wooden galleries with arcades.

Throughout its history, Pětipsy Chateau has seen numerous owners, each leaving their mark on its structure and legacy. After the Egerberg family, ownership passed to the Lobkowicz family in 1332, followed by Opl of Fictum in 1518. The chateau prospered under his rule until he was forced to flee due to counterfeiting activities. It then became royal property before being acquired by the Thun family in 1623. The Thun family maintained ownership until the land reform of 1923, after which it passed through various hands, including Gustav Hodkovi and Zdeněk Hodek's family.

Key events in the chateau's history include its involvement in regional conflicts such as the Bohemian Revolt, during which Oldřich Hrobčický lost ownership due to his participation. Additionally, a notable feud between 1404 and 1407 resulted in the imprisonment of a neighbor within the chateau walls. Today, Pětipsy Chateau stands unused and in a desolate state, reflecting its long journey through time. Restoration efforts initiated in 2012 by Via Levamente aim to preserve the chateau's legacy, with plans to establish a museum dedicated to Samo's Empire.
