Písečný vrch is an archaeological site in the village Bečov, southeast of the Bridge in the Ústí Region. This hill with an altitude of 318 metres is a geologically and archaeologically important place known as the oldest quarry in Europe. From paleolithic to medium bronze time, quartz was used here to make tools. In 1996 the site was declared protected by nature, highlighting its double value - archaeological and ecological.

Before he became an archaeological monument, the hill was an important geological service. It's the remnants of the core of a tripartite volcano, which eventually reduced the erosion considerably. This context provides valuable information about past climatic and environmental conditions in the Czech Central Mountains.

The archaeological history of Sandhill is rich and diverse. In the 1960s, there was a rescue archaeological research which revealed the oldest known quarry in Europe. This quartz was used by stone age humans for tools due to its fine-grained sedimentary character, which enabled easy pinching and the creation of sharp border areas. In the Bronze Age, the rougher kinds of quartz were extracted on the western side of the hill, which served as raw material for hand-held rotary crushers.

The oldest human dwellings found on Sand Hill are from the age of the older paleolithic. It was a deep underground dwelling with a fireplace, which is considered the oldest human residence in the Czech Republic. From this time many stone tools and their chippings were discovered here. In the younger paleolithic area, blades of knives were produced from the local quartz, which were found at a great distance from the Sandy Hill.

In 1972, archaeological research was interrupted for financial reasons. However, further research was carried out in 2005, which provided new knowledge of the history and use of the hill by people of prehistoric age. Since 1974 Písečný vrch has been an archaeological cultural monument.

The nature reserve on Sandhill was announced in 1996 in order to protect warm species of plants and animals. This site has an area of 39,16 hectares and is located at an altitude between 270 and 318 metres. The flora of the area is characteristic of continental steppes with many endangered plant species such as spring head and Austrian goat. The Fauna site brings a number of unique and relict insect species.

Today Písečný vrch is not only an archaeological monument, but also a natural body with a rich biodiversity. Its history and nature make it an interesting destination for all who are interested in primacy or nature conservation. The visit to Sandhill offers a unique view of the history of human civilization and the natural beauty of the Czech Republic.

The monument is an important part of the cultural and natural history of the region, which makes it not only important for experts but also for the general public. It is a place where people interested in archaeology and science can meet, and where it is possible to appreciate the importance of protecting historical and natural monuments. The visit to Sandhill offers not only knowledge of the past, but also inspiration to maintain and protect our cultural and natural heritage for future generations.

Welcome to Sandy litter. Right now, standing here in Bečov, you're in a place that carries an incredible depth of time. Look around you. This may seem like just another beautiful, rocky and sandy piece of the landscape within the Czech Central Fire, but believe me, there is a history under your footsteps that goes back to the very beginning of human existence. Feel this atmosphere, calm and deep connection with the nature that exists here. You're standing in a place where the geology meets the human story, where every layer of the country can tell a different chapter in our world.

Let us now move together in time towards the very foundations. Písečný vrch is not just an ordinary place in the landscape. It is a place of incredible significance because it is the oldest quarry in all of Europe. Imagine those ancient times when people were just beginning to discover the world and find ways to ensure their survival. Here, in this place, there was a treasure that was more valuable to them than gold. The treasure was quartz. This hard and able to create very sharp edges stone was the basis for producing all important tools. From the age of older paleolithic to the age of bronze, thousands of years, people came here to mine this precious material.

Notice the surrounding landscape and try to imagine what this place looked like at the time of the oldest people. Within the oldest known human residence found here, there was also a fireplace in the country. Imagine the bright flame in the darkness of ancient times, the warmth that provided security, and the human voices that were heard at night on this very hill. This is not just a place of mining, but a real home where the first ideas of cooperation and technology were born.

Now pay attention to what you see under your feet and around you. Even if you do not find here buildings, towers or monumental monuments of stone, the architecture of this place is created by the nature and layers of the earth itself. Look at the structure of the terrain, the shapes created by water, wind and human hand thousands of years ago. Feel how soil composition changes and natural geological shapes mix with archaeological clues. This architecture is alive and constantly changing.

Although we don't know the names of the particular people who lived here, their presence here is felt in every piece of quartz. We don't know their faces or their names, but their legacy is indestructible. They were masters of stone work, people who could create a tool from a piece of nature that allowed them to survive. Their work here took place for a huge period, from the oldest to when people were already starting to work with bronze. It is a fascinating idea that it was in this particular place that different cultures and different ways of life met over the millennium.

The history of this place is also a story of modern science and an effort to preserve it. In the 1960s, rescue archaeological research took place here. Scientists tried to capture and understand what was hidden here before this valuable history was lost. It was a time of great discovery and enthusiasm. However, as is often the case in history, the path to complete knowledge has been challenging. In 1972, archaeological research had to be interrupted, for very simple but sad reasons - there was no funding. Yet they didn't give up. In 1974, this place was officially recognised as an archaeological cultural monument, which was the first big step towards protecting it.

The interesting thing is that Písečný vrch has its value in a double plane. It's not just a place for archaeologists, but it's also a place for nature lovers. In 1996, this site was declared a protected nature reserve. Why was that? Because in addition to human footprints, there is also the wealth of the natural world. This area is home to many species of plants and animals who love heat. This combination of archaeological heritage and ecological value makes Sandy litter a unique place. It is a rare connection between the past of mankind and the present life of nature.

Perhaps you are now being told if there is any mystery. One of the biggest mysteries this place has to offer is the constant transformation. How did this place stay so important for so long? How did people keep coming back here to mine quartz even when the world around them was changing? And how did this place, so intensely used by humans, once centuries of peace, grow again as a refuge for rare plants and animals? This question about the relationship between man, his work and the subsequent return of nature to his master may be the greatest mystery you can experience here.

Thanks to further research, such as the one that took place in 2005, we are learning more and more about what happened here. Every new find, every new layer of land puts a piece of the puzzle in our hand.

Now please continue to walk and continue to explore this place. Look under your feet, look at the horizon, and feel the silence that carries the echo of thousands of years. Let yourself be carried away by the beauty of the Czech Mediterranean and the memories of those who were before us. Písečný vrch has something to offer you if you pay your attention and respect to its history and nature. Thank you for visiting us, and we wish you a wonderful and inspiring encounter with this extraordinary monument. Enjoy the rest of your journey.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring - In the period of blooming grasses and the first greenery, soft, scattered light is spread on Sand Hill, highlighting the fine contours of archaeological finds. The soil is wet and slippery in the rain, so it is worth choosing waterproof shoes and laminated clothing that can be easily adjusted to variable temperatures. If you want to avoid a smaller number of visitors, go to the place early in the morning when the air is fresh and the sun is not yet cursing.

Summer - The main summer season is dominated by strong sun and dry terrain, which can reach high temperatures during noon. Insects and occasional dust mist are typical, therefore the recommended hat, sunscreen and plenty of fluids. The most pleasant is a walk in the colder hours - either just after sunrise or late afternoon, when the light turns golden and the crowds are smaller.

Autumn - When the leaves turn into golden and red shades, the atmosphere on the top gets a quiet, almost mystical touch, and the partial fog often surrounds elevated points, creating interesting contrasts for photographers. The temperatures are falling, sometimes the wind gets colder, so it is advisable to carry a warmer jacket and tight shoes with a good grip. It is ideal to set off during sunny days when light is bright and avoid rainy afternoon hours when the surface could become slippery.

Winter - In winter, Písečný vrch is covered in quiet snow, which creates long shadows and dramatic shapes at a low angle of the sun. The cold may be sharp, and the surface may be snowy or slightly frozen, therefore warm layers, waterproof winter shoes, gloves and caps are necessary. The most suitable visit is during a bright, sunny day when snow shines and crowds are the smallest; The afternoon hours provide enough light, but not yet so low an angle that makes orientation difficult.
