Pivovar Česká Lípa is a baroque complex from 1698, which served to brew beer for 250 years. The monument is located in Česká Lípa and is important in its long history, which dates back to the 14th century.

The history of brewing in this area is evidenced by the privilege of Hynek Berka from Dubé in 1381. The proceeds of the city of Zitava from 1414 prohibited the import of competing beer from České Lípa. This suggests that the then residents probably cooked beer in their houses. At the end of the 16th century the town brewery served the entire legal community in the rear wing of the town hall, which managed the brew. After the Battle of White Mountain however, the new owner of the city, Albrecht z Valdštejna, took away the right to cook beer. The townspeople only recovered it in 1660 under stricter conditions. The original town brewery was not restored after the fire in 1787 due to frequent fires in the city.

The new brewery was built in 1698 by Jan Vilém, hrabě z Kounic, behind the city gates of Cross Street, which is now called Moscow. The area was created after a devastating fire in the city. At the time of its construction, the Czech country was part of the Habsburg monarchy and dominated the Baroque in architecture.

After building the complex he served as a brewery. Since 1790, the city has been using it for its own operation. In July 1901 the City Hall bought it from the authorities for half a million crowns and established a joint stock company with a majority share. The town brewery prospered and beer was sold in the surroundings and in the city itself. After 1945 it was taken over by the local national committee. In 1948 the company was transferred to the North Bohemian brewery national enterprise. Production was stopped on 16 December 1948, the facility was then sold, destroyed or removed.

There were various kinds of beers: eights, tens and occasionally fourteen or sixteen. After production in 1948, many companies worked in buildings, such as bottling, cold storage, vegetable warehouses, driving school or the production of stamps.

The former brewery is located on the corner of Moscow and Purkyn Street near the hospital. His entrance building has been registered as a protected cultural monument since 1958. In 2014, information on plans to restore the brewery appeared in the regional press.

The monument is an important witness to the history of local brewing and architecture. Its tour offers insight into the history of industrial use of buildings in the region.

Welcome to Česká Lípa. You are standing right in Cross Street, in front of a place that carries the incredible weight of centuries and stories that have shaped the lives of many generations of people. Before your eyes, there is a Baroque area whose presence here is very strong and noble. While the world is constantly changing, this complex remains a fixed anchor of history, a witness to prosperity and decline, and yet a relentless perennial in the heart of the city. Feel this atmosphere, feel the calm that radiates from these walls, and prepare to travel through time.

To understand why this place is so special, we need to go back a lot further than we might think at first sight. You might be thinking that the buildings you're looking at are very old, but their roots go deep into the Middle Ages. The whole tradition of brewing beer in this area is not just a local matter, it is a historical process that was clearly documented already in 1381. At that time this right was confirmed by a special privilege issued by Hynek Berka of Dubé. Imagine that time when the right to brew beer became a fundamental pillar of the economy and social order. The beer wasn't just a drink, it was part of life, a symbol of stability and the rule of law.

But now look at the very form of this site. What you see before you is the result of a great transformation. The history of this place has not always been a linear continuation of old and new. The city of Česká Lípa had to face difficult times, including devastating fires that had hit the city's buildings in the past. It is after one of these deadly fires that has made a fundamental change. The present Baroque area, which you see today as one whole, was established in 1698. It was built as a superstructure, which gave it the noble, representative character that you are still searching for in its architecture.

Notice how the Baroque style manifests itself in the overall effect of the buildings. Although we are focusing on the atmosphere of the whole complex, it is obvious that it is a construction with a clear purpose - it should have been used to cook beer, but at the same time it should have reflected the power and position of its owners. The main character of this new era was Jan Vilém, hrabě z Kounic. In 1698 he decided to build this new brewery, laying the foundations for another two and a half centuries of constant activity.

Now let's think about what really happened in these areas. Imagine the hundreds of years when people kept moving around in the premises, when raw materials were moving in the courtyard, and when the air was carrying the specific smell of malt and hops. This brewery was not just an ordinary business, it was a living organism. For two hundred and fifty years there was a constant rhythm of brewing beer. And it wasn't just any beer. There were various types of drinks that had their own name and character. We can talk about eights, tens, fourteen or sixteen. These names were a clear guide for the people back then, determining the strength and character of the beer they were buying. Each species required different care, different temperature and different patience.

Now pay attention to another important turn in the history of this place. The transition from noble property to municipal administration was very significant in 1901. The brewery then bought the city and created a public limited company. This meant modernisation and new perception of the enterprise as part of urban property. However, as history often revolves, this era had its end. The year 1948 brought about a fundamental change that stopped a long-standing tradition. The beer production was closed and the company was transferred to the management of the national enterprise. That was the moment when silence returned to the places where life used to warm.

You may now ask what happened to these buildings after they stopped serving their original purpose. The buildings did not disappear here, but they had to adapt to a new, often very different reality. They served as diverse storage places, and they even had a driving school at some point. It's a fascinating idea that in the space where beer was brewed for centuries, people later learned to drive a car. History is constantly being rewritten here and buildings become just vessels for new activities.

Although the functions of the buildings changed, their historical value remained. Note especially the entrance building of the complex. It has been registered as a protected cultural monument since 1958. This is proof that despite the changes in use, despite the period when buildings were only warehouses, people realized their immense value to the city and to the whole country. This building is a guardian of the entry into a world that no longer exists, but that we can still search in its shadows.

If you're going to walk on now, try to think in your mind of the characters that left their mark. Hynek Berka of Dubé, who gave birth to the right to cook beer. Albrecht z Valdštejna, whose name is linked to the history of the entire region. And, of course, the Jan Vilém, hrabě z Kounic, who gave birth to this Baroque area in its present form. Each of these characters adds to the depth of this place.

Remember that you are facing a place that has survived fires, political upheavals and changes in economic systems. It is a place that has proved to be everything - from a noble noble mansion to a busy brewery to practical warehouses. It is this ability to adapt without losing its essence that makes the brewery in České Lípa a fascinating destination for every visitor.

Now I urge you to continue your search and find your own details that interest you. Look at the structure of the buildings, see their baroque shapes and try to imagine what sounds and smells existed here hundreds of years ago. Thank you for joining me on this short journey through time. I wish you a pleasant further discovery of Czech history.
