Plecháčův mlýn is a valuable example of folk architecture in the early 19th century, protected as a real cultural monument of the Czech Republic. The building stands out for technical solutions in demanding terrain and preserved economic facilities, which illustrates the traditional way of rural management.

The mill stands on the eastern edge of the village of Lower Javorí in the district of Jičín near the nameless creek. His oldest history and specific builders were left with little news, but the creation of the building dates back to the beginning of the 19th century. In this period, when the national revival and beginnings of the industrial revolution took place in Czech countries, rural architecture still strongly reflected traditional craft practices and the use of local materials.

The construction has a rectangular plan and is situated perpendicular to the pedestal. This solution forced the narrow terrain above the creek, which required the construction of a high stone suspect. Ground floor building with floor has stucco plaster with visible corner stone pillars. The rear tract of the building consists of unbraided sandstone blocks and bricks, the whole is closed by a saddle roof.

The area is complemented by an economic background which consists of a three-way pillar barn with wooden fillings closing the yard from the north-east. The barn pliers are made of white bricks. The original stone cellar with wooden doors is also part of the monument protected unit, located separately across the road opposite the shield facade of the mill.

A key technical element was the drive that brings water to the water wheel. After 1918, there is evidence of the use of one wheel on top water, which worked with a drop of 6.5 metres. The other fate of the mill or its owners is not kept in more detailed records in the available sources.

Today, Plecháčův mlýn is an authentic proof of the historical rural architecture of Jičinska. The interest in technical monuments and folk construction offers the possibility of a tour of the exterior, which faithfully illustrates the connection of residential and economic functions in past centuries. Visiting this place allows us to see how our ancestors used water energy in difficult terrain conditions.

Welcome to the White Castle Spa! You are facing one of the greatest examples of the popular architecture of our region - Tin Mill. Look up and you will see its characteristic saddle roof, which stands out above the landscape of Lower Mavory. Notice how the whole building is built on a stone suspect, which was necessary because of the narrow terrain. These technical solutions not only ensured stability, but also contributed to the aesthetics of the whole.

Let's dive into the history of this place. Plecháčův mlýn was created in the early nineteenth century and is proof of the wise use of natural resources of that time. The mill was built to use the power of the water stream to power the millstones. After 1918 another interesting detail appeared - the water from the creek was brought to the upper level using a water wheel, allowing more efficient use of energy with a height difference of over six meters.

Now pay attention to the architecture of the mill. It is a walled building with a floor that combines stucco plaster and sandstone masonry in the rear tract. This construction not only provides a unique appearance, but also testifies to the artistic taste and technical knowledge of the then builders. Take a look at the pillar barn part of the complex, which gives the whole another historical significance.

Although we are unable to mention specific names of architects or personalities associated with this place, it is clear that Plecháčův mlýn was an important part of the local community. The mill was not only a workplace for flour and grain, but also a centre of social life at the time.

The interesting thing about this place is that Plecháčův mlýn was included in the list of real cultural monuments of the Czech Republic around 2000. This step has recognised its historical and architectural value, which encourages us to protect it for future generations.

Now imagine what stories have happened here - from workers working at the mill to families gathering under the roof of the pillar barn. Every stone and every rod of this place carries its own story.

I recommend that you take a look around and take time to understand its historical context. Don't be afraid to look closer or even stop and listen to the silent sounds of nature that were important for the operation of this mill.

Thank you for your visit to Tin Man's Mill. I hope you felt at home and gained new knowledge of our rich history. Whether you continue to explore the Belgrade Spa or notice other interesting places, we wish you a nice day and a relaxing experience.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is during the late spring or early autumn, when the surrounding landscape is coloured and the construction of the mill is better displayed in natural daylight. For photography I recommend using soft light during the morning or shortly before sunset, which will highlight the structure of stone suspects and historical masonry. Take with you fixed shoes because the terrain around the mill can be uneven and natural. In the surrounding area you can explore the village Lázně Bělohrad and the whole area of Jičinska, which offers quiet walks in nature. For families with children, the location is suitable as a destination for a simple trip, where children can be shown a demonstration of folk architecture from the early nineteenth century in the field.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring: In spring, the area of the mill wakes up. The trees are beginning to green and the stream may have a greater weight due to snow melting. The atmosphere is fresh and full of new powers. I recommend wearing layered clothes because morning temperatures can still be low, and shoes that can handle wet soil. The best is to arrive early in the morning, when the sun gently shines through the young leaves.

Summer: In the summer months the landscape is densely green and the air is warm. The sun shines the strongest, and the days are the longest, creating a clear and lively atmosphere. It is advisable to carry light clothes and protection from sunlight. For a more pleasant experience I recommend a visit in late afternoon, when the heat is lighter.

Autumn: Autumn brings gold and brown to the mill area. A fog often forms over the water, giving the place a mysterious touch. It is necessary to prepare for colder weather and damp, therefore waterproof shoes and warmer layers are suitable. The most beautiful light is offered during the late afternoon when the sun shines low.

Winter: Winter is quiet and the landscape is still active. The branches of the trees are bare and the water can be covered with ice or snow. The light is weak and the days are very short. For a visit it is necessary to have very warm clothes and shoes with good grip in case of ice. The best time for observation is the lunchtime when the light is the most.
