Wagnerova chalupa, located in the Belgrade Spa, is a unique example of a residential building inspired by folk architecture. The house was built between 1911 and 1913 on the intention of textile industrialist Oldřich Wagner. His architectural design, created by the son-in-law of Wagner, architect Paul Nørregaard together with Axell Wahl Baue, reflects folk culture and style Art Nouveau. Today the house is protected as a cultural monument and attracts attention with its historical and architectural properties.

The emergence of Wagner's cottage was linked to the period of modernization and industrialisation that took place in Europe in the early 20th century. In Bohemia, folk architecture has become an inspiration for new architectural trends, which is also evident in this building. Investor of the building, Oldřich Wagner, long owned a house in Belgrade Square, but later he had a new house built for himself and his family in the street U Pazanovnice no. 201. The architects Nørregaard and Bau started their study of folk architecture in Podkrkonoší, which contributed to the unique design of the cottage.

Architecturally, Wagnerova chalupa is characterized by a single-storey design with a polyvalba roof. The most striking feature of the house is the garden facade, which is characterized by a wooden arcade with profiled posts, a plank balustrade and a quarry folded vertically and with a clasp. Although the original artistic elements of the interior have not yet been preserved, their design has been inspired by the folk culture and work of Dusan Jurkovic.

The history of owning Wagner's cottage is marked by dramatic changes. After February 1948, forced tenants were moved into the house, and the owner's family had to live only on the grounds of the house until the 1960s. In 1967 the house was declared a cultural monument, which meant its protection and recognition of historical value.

Among the key events in the history of the cottage are the planned visit of T. G. Masaryk in 1930, which was cancelled due to strikes linked to the economic crisis. Despite this failure to implement the plan, the choice of cottage for presidential accommodation shows its original prestige and quiet location.

Today Wagnerova chalupa is protected as a cultural monument, which ensures its preservation for future generations. Although the project for the reconstruction of the building and its addition was only partially implemented in the years 2010-11, the house remains an important historical monument. Its unique architecture and rich history make Wagner's cottage worth visiting for anyone interested in the history and architecture of the Czech Republic. Visiting this monument means not only appreciating its historical value, but also understanding the influence of folk culture on modern architectural trends.

Wagnerova chalupa is a reminder of the time when folk inspiration has become the basis for new architectural forms. Its preservation and protection allow us today to feel connected to the past and appreciate the history that this monument represents. Visit her and let her beauty and history address you.

Guide

Welcome, you are standing in front of Wagner's cottage, a house that floats over the quiet garden of the Belgrade spa and looks like a traditional village residence, but with a hint of the early 1920s. When you look at the overall arrangement, there are simple lines and harmony, which act as an invitation to think about how ordinary folk construction in the past has been enacted with the artistic concept of new directions. You put on your headphones, so let this place take you through a voice that brings you closer not only to the stone walls, but also to the stories that are hidden in them.

Let's move on to the very origin of the cottage. It was built between a thousand and nine hundred eleven and a thousand and nine hundred thirteen to the castle of the textile industrialist Oldřich Wagner, a man who wanted his success in the textile industry to create a home that reflected the roots and traditions of folk culture. The project was prepared by two architects, Paul Nørregaard and Axel Wahlem Bau, who decided to combine the knowledge of local construction habits with those of art tendencies called Art Nouveau. At that time, the desire for new forms developed in the Czech countries, but they would not forget the historical roots, and it was this idea that became the basis for the establishment of Wagner's cottage.

Now pay attention to the architecture surrounding you. First of all, notice how the facade of the cottage extends in simple but carefully balanced proportions. The windows are arranged symmetrically and their frames resemble craftsmanship, which was common in folk houses. The roof, although not described in detail, bears a characteristic shape that evokes traditional saddle roofs and thus underlines the connection with the rural environment. Details such as decorative attic rails are depicted in the spirit of Art Nouveau - here the curvature and ornaments inspired by nature meet with practical craftsmanship. The whole appearance acts as a harmonious whole which combines a rustic atmosphere and artistic elegance.

Now let's move on to the stories that bind to this house. Oldřich Wagner, the founder of the cottage, was not only a successful businessman, but also a man who wanted to offer his surroundings something more than just industrial success. His intention reflected the desire to create a place where culture and everyday life would meet. The author Karel Václav Rais met with this intention, who found inspiration for his literary work in the cottage and often visited Wagner's salon environment. In a thousand and nine hundred and thirty, President Tomáš Garrigua Masaryk was scheduled to visit, but due to the strikes at the time, this important moment was cancelled. Even so, the idea that Wagnerova chalupa was considered a sufficiently important place to attract even state leaders is preserved in memory.

Among the interesting things that make this building exceptional are the fact that it is a unique example of a residential house that was deliberately designed under the influence of folk architecture. At a time when more representative buildings in the style of history or new modern directions were built in many cities, Wagnerova chalupa bravely stood on the edge of tradition and new artistic currents. The fact that the architects Paul Nørregaard and Axel Wahlem Bau decided to capture in the project not only aesthetic but also social values of folk culture gives this house a special historical weight. Moreover, the fact that the house was created at the request of a textile mogul underlines the link between industrial wealth and cultural aspirations.

And now I'm presenting you with a little mystery that can stir up your imagination. Although the planned visit to Masaryk is known to have been cancelled, the question remains of what impact his presence could have on the fate of the cottage and on the relations between industry and culture at that time. If the meeting had taken place, perhaps a new chapter of cooperation between state officials and private entrepreneurs would have opened up, trying to promote national identity through architecture. This unresolved option gives the place an element that encourages you to think about what paths could be opened if history went in a different direction.

In conclusion, I invite you to explore this place again. Even though you are now only in front of the outer walls, you can imagine what life was like inside, how people met here, how talks about art, industry and national identity spread. Walk around the garden, feel the atmosphere that comes from the time when the new chapter of Czech architecture was created. Let yourself be inspired by the fact that even in a simple house a rich blend of tradition and innovation can be hidden. Thank you for listening to this guide, and I hope that Wagnerova chalupa will lead you to further discoveries and to a deeper understanding not only of this particular building, but also of the broader context in which Czech culture and architecture developed. Goodbye, and I look forward to meeting you at the next historical monument.
