Plzeň zastávka Railway stop
Plzeň zastávka is a protected railway stop in the village Jižní Předměstí in Pilsen region. The current building, built in 1927, combines elements of art deco and cubism. Located on the km 95,893 tracks from Pilsen to Železné Rudy-Elizabeth in the district of the main railway station.
The need to set up a stop was created with the construction of a military hospital. The first temporary wooden shelter was built in 1905. In 1917, engineer Robert Burian designed a neo-Baroque building with a glazed porch, but the project was not implemented due to changes in the taste of the time. The plan of architect Vojtěv Krcha was followed, inspired by cubism, but it also remained intact. Finally, the design of Prague architect Miloš Fikr, the author of the railway station in Pilzni-Zramice, was selected. The construction was carried out by František Jenč, František Hladeček and František Kroft, completed in 1927.
The two-storey building with underpanding combines elements of art deco and cubism. The exterior and the interior are decorated with needle and semi-circular elements. There are three round hours and a private entrance to four apartment units that occupy the above-ground floor. It originally contained public spaces such as a spacious lobby, two waiting rooms, a cash register, luggage storage, station refreshments and social facilities.
In the 1950s, public spaces were converted into commercial spaces. Since 29 June 1995, the building has been protected as a cultural monument and was renovated in 2005.
In May 2014, a multicultural centre was established on the ground floor with community art facilities and galleries of a non-profit organization Pilsen Zastávka. The stop has an external platform of 253 metres long, edge at 380 millimetres above the top of the rail. Travelers are provided with shelter and automatic lighting. Information about train rides is provided by INISS radio equipment, which is controlled from the headquarters in Prague.
This monument represents a unique witness to the search for a new national style in the architecture of the first republic. Its visit offers a view of the combined functionality of railway transport and aesthetics of cubism and art deco.

Welcome to Pilsen Railway Station. You're standing right where history meets the daily movement of people and where the echoes of the past mix with the rhythm of the modern city. Before your eyes is a building that is not just a regular waiting room, but a real architectural treasure that has been standing here for almost a hundred years. Feel the atmosphere of this place, which serves as an important knot on the track leading towards Iron ore and Elizabeth. It's a place of passage, but because of its beautiful form, it also becomes a place that one wants to see and realize its meaning.
Now let's go back deep into the past together to understand why this stop has even started to build. The story of this place began not with a great construction, but with a very simple beginning. In the year one thousand nine hundred and five there was no stone palace, only a simple, provisional wooden shelter. It was only for the basic need for passengers to have a place to wait for their connection. However, circumstances began to change. The need to set up a permanent and fixed stop was not only due to the increasing number of passengers, but mainly to the important events in the area. At that time, a military hospital was built in this part of town. The soldiers and all the people connected to this hospital needed a reliable and stable connection to the surroundings, so it became clear that the wooden shelter would no longer be enough.
In a thousand and nine hundred and twenty-six, the decision was made to build a real, permanent building. A group of experts, whose names we must remember today, was behind the implementation of this great project. They were František Jenč, František Hladecek and František Kroft. It was thanks to their work and efforts that the entire expedition building, including the platforms, was completed in the year one thousand nine hundred twenty-seven. Since then, this building has become a solid part of the landscape and witnessed many historical moments.
Now pay attention to the architecture of the building in front of you. Look at her shapes and lines. This whole object is the work of an architect named Miloš Fikr. If you look at his work, you will see a fascinating combination of two different but complementary styles. One of them is cubism, which in this construction shows its geometric strength and bold shapes. The second style you find in it is one with more decorative and elegant lines, typical of the early 20th century. This combination gives the building a unique character.
The building has two floors and is built on solid foundations that extend back to the basement. Note above all the part that stands out slightly in front of the rest of the main facade. This part is technically called risalite. It's right here, in this middle place, that you can see something really special. Look up. See that three round hours? These three hours are a symbol of the accuracy that the railway has always required. Imagine how their hands circulated fluently for decades while people were waiting for their trains, some with tension, others in peace. These clocks are the heart of this facade and a reminder of the time that keeps flowing here.
Although the building is very historic and noble, its life today is very lively and modern. This building was not forgotten. In a thousand and nine hundred and ninety-five, its significance was recognised and the building was placed under protection as a monument. Later, in the year two thousand five, the building underwent an important reconstruction which helped her to preserve her beauty for future generations. But the biggest transformation brought in the year two thousand and fourteen. In that year, a multicultural centre was established on the ground floor of the building. This means that a place that once served only to wait for the train turned into a living heart of the local community.
Today on the ground floor you will find an art workshop where people can create and share their ideas, and also a gallery that exhibits works of various artists. It is a fascinating transformation - from a simple wooden shelter, to a military need and a railway stop, to a modern meeting place of people, art and various cultures. So the building still serves people, but now in a completely different sense.
When you look at this building, you can feel different ages intermingling in it. From the wood elements of a thousand and nine hundred and five to the stone solid construction from the 1920s to today's art projects. It's a place that can inspire people even when they're just waiting for their connection.
Now, I beg you, continue to drift through the atmosphere of this place. Look at the facade in detail, see the shapes created by Miloš Fikr, and perhaps even imagine all the people who stood before you. When you continue your journey, take this feeling of connection with history and art. Thank you for spending this moment with us at this monument. We wish you a wonderful further journey and many other interesting experiences.

Seasonal recommendations
Sun rays illuminate architecture and give the impression of a warm atmosphere. It is suitable for visitors to wear light but protective clothing, because they can be cold drapes in the spring sun. The best time for a tour is noon, when nature and the monument light up best.
The atmosphere is full of life and excitement because many people visit the city in the main summer season. We recommend arriving early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid large crowds. Don't forget the protective sun clothes and plenty of drinking water.
The leaves of trees turn into vivid colours and the lighting is softer, which adds to the touching of architecture. Dress warmer because winter comes faster than expected, and note that some parts may be closed earlier because of short days.
Winter freezing air adds touching to historic buildings and streets. We recommend warm clothes, both for protection against cold and for a shorter opening time of the sights. It is best to visit the day without snow or sun and enjoy a quiet atmosphere.
