Podškolský mlýn was a water mill in the village of Blatná in the district of Strakonice, which stood on the river Lomnice. The building came from the period before 1600 and was important with its technical equipment, including one of the first Girard turbines in Bohemia. Today, it's a dying memory.

The oldest parts of the mill date back to before 1600, which is confirmed by the construction survey at which the Gothic masonry was found. The mill was created during the period when urban and rural industries were expanding and changes in the way water flows were used for technological progress in Europe.

Water to the water wheel was driven from the pond. The waste channel of 420 metres in length returned water to the river while serving as a drive for the adjoining mill Jeklík. At the castle moat on the south side of the bridge was the Sloupí river, over which the excess water flowed to Lomnice. The building was only located during the mill vents. In 1930 the mill took water from the castle ditch through a partially arched drive of 25 metres long and 4 metres wide.

The mill equipment developed in times. In 1753 he had two composition and three rises, the number of rises in 1773 increased to four. Three formulations were installed in 1870, two of which were used alternately. In 1915 the mill already had a Czech, French and cylindrical composition. One cylindrical, simple stool with dimensions of 50 times 25 centimeters, Czech stone and French stone are recorded in 1930.

The technological progress of the mill shows the installation of Girard turbine in 1870, which was the second of its kind in Bohemia. At that time the mill used the combination of the wheel for the bottom water and turbines. In 1930, the Girard turbine was operated with a vertical axis, which provided a performance of 4.6 horses at 419 litres per second and 1.1 metres.

The history of the mill was accompanied by disputes and tragedies. In 1895, the miller led the conflict with the miller from the mill Jeklík, which was overmaintenance of the water, causing flooding in the basement of the Underschool Mill and preventing grinding. The same year, June 21, Blatna hit a flood that broke ten ponds. Through the broken roof of the mill, neighbors were rescued from nearby houses at the time.

During World War II, the mill was forced to close. In 1945, the miller died of typhus, which he contracted while cleaning the drive, where the sewage from the city prison was brought. The operation was definitively completed in 1949 and the family moved out of the building.

The mill was protected as a real cultural monument of the Czech Republic between 1958 and 1967. It was designed for demolition in 1963 and was really demolished in 1969. A year later, the drive was covered and blown.

Although Podškolský mlýn no longer exists physically, its history shows the technical development of water management in Blatná. The site of the former mill resembles the extinct era of artisanal grinding of grain. We recommend exploring the surroundings of the Lomnice river and the castle moat, where its water structures were once located.

Welcome to Blatna. You are standing in a place that is quiet and quiet today, but which in the past has been full of movement, water hum and constant rhythm work. Even though you are now looking at the banks of the Lomnice River and perhaps you seem to be missing some building element, your presence here is associated with a very important part of local history. You're standing where life-giving power once flowed and Podškolský mlýn was located. Try to close your eyes for a moment and listen only to the stream of water that still flows around you. That sound is the closest ally to the past you can see here.

Let us return together to a time when the world was different. Podškolský mlýn was not just an ordinary construction, it was an important point on the map of this region. Its roots go deep in history, just before the year sixteen hundred. This means that this mill witnessed many generations of people living here, working and relying on the power of water. At that time, the machines were not as advanced as they are today, and it was this water mill that was crucial to the livelihood of the surrounding humanity. It was built directly on the Lomnica River, which provided the necessary energy for its operation. This river was the main engine of local life then and the mill was his heart.

Now pay attention to what this place might look like if time stopped. Even if you no longer see the construction today, the true beauty of the construction was hidden in its foundations. The mill was built in a Gothic style, which means that its masonry was made of massive, roughly worked stones. Imagine those thick walls that had to be strong enough to carry the weight of water and the constant vibrations of working machines. Gothic architecture was not only about beauty, but especially about strength and durability. These stone shapes were typical of the period when it was built for centuries, not just for decades. Even though these walls are gone today, their spirit still persists in this place.

If you look at the flow of water, you can realize how complex the system that worked here was. The mill was not a lonely island. The water that flowed around the Underschool Mill was also used for other purposes. The very interesting thing is that the water from this mill served as a drive for another mill called Jeklík. Imagine the network of waterways, how they were connected, how the water traveled from one place to another, and how the entire area could use the power of the Lomnice River much more efficiently. It was a kind of primitive but very clever engineering that required a deep understanding of nature.

However, nature was sometimes very hard and unpredictable. One of the greatest moments that this mill and the whole surrounding area have affected was the devastating flood in the year one thousand eight hundred and ninety-five. This event has caused huge water management problems and has disrupted the stability of the entire system. Such moments show how fragile the balance between man and river was. The water that was a source of life and work could turn into a destructive force in one moment that threatened everything around it. These historical events left a trail in the memory of local residents that was passed down from generation to generation.

But now we need to look at the sadder side of the history of this place, which concerns modern times. During the last century, this historical object became more interested. In a thousand and nine hundred fifty-eight, the mill was officially recognized as a cultural monument. This meant that the state and experts recognized its high historical value and decided to protect it from extinction. It was an effort to preserve a piece of history for future generations. However, this protection was not permanent. In a thousand and nine hundred and sixty-seven, protection as a cultural monument ended. That was the first step towards what happened later.

The tragic end came in a thousand nine hundred seventy, when the mill was completely demolished. It was a period when many old buildings were sacrificed for modernization or other purposes. Even if you see here today only an empty place by the river, it is important to realize that this space has its own, deep history. The demise of the Underschool Mill is a reminder of how quickly the landscape faces can change if we ignore it.

You may now ask what such a place can give us when there is nothing in it. The answer is in his atmosphere and what we can draw in our minds. You're standing in a place where human effort, architecture, and the uncontrollable power of water were collided. It's a place to think about how our relationship with nature changed and how our need to build permanent monuments changed.

Now let's move on along the shore. Let yourself be drifted through the surrounding countryside and continue your journey along Blatná. Every step can lead you to another story, another history waiting for your discoverers. Thank you for stopping by here and paying attention to this forgotten place. We will brighten up a pleasant walk and hope that this view of the past has brought you a new perception of the outside world. We'll say goodbye and wish you a beautiful rest of the day.
