Radnice a škola v Bubenči School building
Radnice a škola v Bubenči, located in Krupkov Square 4-5 in Prague 6 - Drumenči, are a pair of historical buildings set in eclectic architectural style. These monuments were built in the early 20th century in response to the need for new office and school facilities for the rapidly growing village Bubeneč, which in 1904 acquired city status. Since 2008 they have been protected as a cultural monument.
The history of these buildings dates back to 1765, when it is reminded of a deserted cottage sold by Karel Josef Dont Václav Dlouhý. After several changes to the owners, Jan Helcl's first trivial school was founded in 1794 at the initiative of a local vicar. With the construction of a new large school in Wolker Street in 1889, the old building began to serve as the municipal office of Bubenče. Fast growth and the need for a representative local centre led to a new town hall project which was completed in 1905.
Architectural buildings are designed by Václav Ort and their implementation led by Jindřich Frolík. The sculpting and stucco decoration was carried out by Riedl, Popp & Mayer of the Royal Vinohrad, where the sculptor Antonín Popp was the leading designer. The facade connected by four-wing building is typical of its time with eclectic elements of the Neo-Renaissance, Baroque and Art-Nouveau. The Town Hall Portal is decorated with a pair of coats of arms with personifications of Bohemia and Moravia, while the school portal is decorated with a woman's head in a flower wreath. Among the windows on the south facade are figural reliefs: girl with hammer and boy in costume.
The property of the building has undergone several changes, starting with Karel Josef Dont in 1765, over Jan Helcl in 1794, up to the city of Bubeneč in 1905. After joining Bubenče in Prague in 1922, the town hall was cancelled and later occupied by a commercial academy.
Key events in the history of the building include the ceremonial opening of the new building of the town hall and school in 1905, the addition of the building of general and urban schools in 1909, and the connection of Bubenč to Prague in 1922. These events reflect the dynamic development of the urban environment and the modernisation of public services at the time.
Today, city hall and school buildings in Bubenč are still used for educational purposes, namely the business academy. Their historical significance and architectural beauty make them an interesting destination for visitors to Prague. You can enjoy not only their history, but also the artistic details that enrich them to this day.
