Skleněný palác is located in Bubenč on Svoboda Square No. 728 / 1, where it forms the dominant triangle square, formerly called Dürichovo. As a cultural monument of the Czech Republic, it is protected and is an architecturally important expression of the functional modern of its времени.

The construction was built in 1936- 1937 according to the design of architect Richard Groundený. It was built as a rental house for the Landesbank based on an architectural competition, which shows the ambition and quality of the project from the very beginning. The house is thus a testament to economic possibilities and modern thinking in recent years before World War II.

The monumental building has a trapezoidal floor plan with a middle seven-storey part facing the Square of Liberty. It is followed by two shorter six-storey side wings, from which the left is headed to the street of the Czechoslovak army and the right to Terronská. The yard is modified as a garden where they used to find a tennis court and a playground. Underneath the house is spread richly equipped underground with cellars, laundry, drying rooms and almonds, which was exceptional for its period.

The apartments have different sizes ranging from the studio apartment to the four-room apartment, there are usually two-bedroom apartments - there are twenty of them in the building. All are equipped with built-in cabinet walls and floor heating. The general majority of the apartments are equipped with logbooks or a winter garden. The roof area served as a recreational terrace with a garden. Also surprisingly, there is a garage, which was unusual for an apartment building at the time.

Architecturally, the house speaks of a clear composition - strictly symmetrical and geometric facade. The ground floor is fully glazed and is intended for trade; a large entrance hall is situated in its central part. The central part of the building is surrounded by columns of logbooks, winter gardens and window belts. The facade is largely glazed, the rest covered with white ceramic tiles. The concrete construction is not visible on the facade.

It was this imaginative architecture and luxury equipment that earned the nicknames that he endured - "Glass House," "Skleněný palác" or "Basement." Commercial premises, wedding hall and information office of Prague 6 are currently represented on the ground floor.

Welcome to the Square of Liberty in Bubenč, where we are facing one of the most famous architectural works of Prague interior - Skleněný palác. If you look up, you'll see his transparent facades that create the impression of lightness and modernity. This functional house with the nickname 'Skleněný palác' is the real jewel of the Prague architectural horizon.

Let's dive into its creation. In 1936 he began the construction of this impressive building, which was completed a year later, in 1937. Architect Richard F. Podzemný was in charge of his design and implementation. Skleněný palác was built as a rental house for the Earth Bank, which is interesting because it was built on the basis of an architectural competition. This context highlights its importance not only as a residential house but also as cultural monuments of the Czech Republic.

Look up and see the elegant lines of the Glass Palace. Its transparent design is the result of modern architecture of the time, which combines functionality with aesthetic beauty. Note how the house is harmoniously interconnected with the surrounding buildings and is at the centre of the attention of Liberty Square 728 / 1. This square, once known as Dürich's, has a triangular shape that dominates the house elegantly.

Although specific historical figures associated with this monument are not widely known, its creation is an integral part of Prague's rich architectural history. Skleněný palác represents the time when Prague architects tried to innovate and bring modern design to the city.

The interesting thing is, the house was designed as a luxury rental estate. This meant that his inner space was equipped with the highest quality and comfort, which was very ambitious for the time being. This detail adds another layer to its historical value.

Now, if you look around, you can realize how this house not only affected the architecture of its time, but also the way people lived. It's a fascinating place to explore.

Allow me to invite you to further explore Bubeneč and its rich historical monuments. I hope you enjoy this trip to the Glass Palace and all of Prague. When we meet again - remember to wish your future visit!

Tips for visitors

For the best observation of architecture we recommend a visit during bright days when sunlight best highlights clean lines and functional details of the building. The perfect time is the morning when light is natural and ideal for watching the textures of the facade.

You can reach the place by car or via public transport. Please check current connections and timetables in the Internet search engine or mobile traffic application. Parking in this part of Bubeneče is possible, but we recommend looking for vacancies in nearby streets.

For photo lovers Skleněný palác is an excellent object thanks to its geometry. We recommend taking the camera with you and focusing on the details of the window frames and the smooth façade. The best lighting conditions to capture these details are during the day.

Families with children can use a walk around the building as part of a trip focused on modern architecture. Since it is an apartment building, it is important not to restrict the privacy of residents.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring: In the spring season Skleněný palác in Bubeneči is revived by flowers and greenery that bring warm sunlight. The sounds of birds and the breath of newly growing grass give the atmosphere a mild and lively character. This is the perfect time for a tour because the crowds are not yet in full force and the opening hours are long. It is recommended to wear light clothes with the possibility to add a layer for a cooler noon because temperatures can be variable.

Summer: Summer in the Glass Palace offers long days and sunny nights, which means ideal conditions for a tour. Nature is at its peak, with full flowers and greenery that deliver beautiful front parts to the palace surroundings. On the contrary, more visitors may appear in the main summer season, so it is advisable to visit the early morning or later in the evening to avoid the crowd. Hot clothes and sun protection (bookmarks, purchase) are necessary for comfort.

Autumn: In the autumn, the green courtyard of the Glass Palace of Coloring takes place and the atmosphere changes when leaves fall and create a fine and peaceful landscape. Sunshine days are still present, but temperatures are falling gradually, which means shorter opening times. The humidity may be high, so it is advisable to bring an umbrella and wear layered clothes. This period is ideal for visiting due to fewer crowds.

Winter: In winter, the buildings of the Glass Palace acquire extraordinary beauty when it is lit and decorated with light to create a magical atmosphere. Due to cold temperatures, opening times are shorter and visitors should be well prepared for cold, wearing warm clothes, hat and gloves. This is also the time when the visit can be reduced, which offers a quieter experience of the tour.
