Radnice v Žamberku is a classic building from 1810 to 1815 located on Masaryk Square. It has served its purpose since 1814 and is remarkable for preserved architectural elements including an attached historical firehouse. This monument forms an important centre of public events in the city and is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

The issue of the building permit and the launch of the new town hall took place in 1810. During the construction period in the early nineteenth century, the Czech countries were located in the Austrian Empire and under the influence of classical art. At the same time, Europe was going through the stormy wars of Naples, which changed the continent's political map. The building itself was completed between 1812 and 1815 and councilmen began to reside in the building in 1814. The historical development of the building also includes the year 1873, when the firehouse was connected to the town hall. The monument protection was granted to the building on 3 May 1958.

The building of the town hall was built in a classical style as a single-storey object on a rectangular plan and is covered with a high wall roof. In the middle, the clock lid ends with onion, lantern and poppy. The corner of the building is decorated with Pillasters and there are profiled shambles around the windows. The main entrance is led by a two-arm sandstone staircase with a bowling ball. The main entrance carries an oval feston on a stone translation with the year 1812 and above it is placed a city emblem. On the left of the main building stands a firehouse that captures the baroque facade with two entrances and a volute shield.

The city of Žamberk is the owner of this cultural monument. It manages and uses the building as a town hall seat.

Among the key moments in the history of the monument are the year 1810 when the construction started, and the year 1814 when the councilmen began to reside in the new building. Also important is the year 1873 associated with connection of the firehouse. The year 1958 became an important milestone for the protection of the building, when the building became monument protected.

Today, this building serves its original purpose and forms a dominant feature of Masaryk Square in the historic city centre. The object presents an example of classical architecture associated with a later neobarical annex. It is freely accessible from the public area of the square and is definitely worth a visit for any interested in building monuments and regional history.

Welcome to Žamberk. Right now, you are standing right in front of the town hall, which is the main decoration of the Masaryk Square and has been a very important centre for all public events in this picturesque city for decades. Look around you and let the atmosphere of this place take hold. If you look in front of you, you see a single-storey building built on a rectangular floor plan above which the high valb roof is turned off. Directly on it you can see an hourly lid, which for generations shows the exact time to all residents and visitors of the city.

Let us now return together in time to the time when this house was created. The construction of the new town hall itself began in the year one thousand eighteen hundred and ten. The city's representatives needed a dignified seat for the administration of the village and therefore the building grew quickly under the hands of the then masters. The work was moving forward and it was not long before the new building was in place. Already in the year one thousand eighteen hundred and fourteen, the councilmen first moved into their new offices and started to work there. Since then, this building has served its original purpose continuously until today, which in itself is an admirable testament to the quality and meaning of the construction at the time.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself. This Classicist building hides a variety of beautiful and carefully preserved elements that are worth a closer look. When you transfer your view to the side of the main object, you will see a historical firehouse attached to it. This added part captures every observer with its interesting neobarical facade. The firehouse was connected in the year one thousand eighteen hundred seventy-three, giving the town hall another layer of its building history and a new dimension of use to protect the population.

When we think about the people who have lived and worked here over the centuries, history doesn't reveal the specific names of individual builders or famous personalities that would give the building their face. But the story of the community itself is all the more powerful. The city hall was not just an office, but a place where decisions were made about the fate of the city where people met, resolved everyday worries and planned the future. Every stone remembers hundreds of meetings, important signatures, joyful moments, and the difficult trials the city has been going through over the years.

The interesting thing that underlines the value of this place is that the construction managed to preserve its authenticity until modern times. In the year one thousand nine hundred fifty-eight the entire building was officially declared a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. By this decision, the State recognised the extraordinary historical and building importance of the town hall and ensured its strict protection for future generations. Thanks to this, we can stand here today and admire the work of the ancestors in almost unchanged form, as it was decades ago.

We hope you enjoyed your tour of the Jamberian Town Hall and that you are taking a nice experience from this place. When you continue your walk around Masaryk Square, try to imagine how people used to rush through here to their duties, how the clock was beating on the tower and how the city was gradually changing. We wish you a beautiful rest of the day and pleasant discovery of other corners of Žamberka. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

A tour of the exterior of the Classicist Town Hall is most impressive from late spring to autumn in clear weather. The morning and early afternoon sun best illuminates the front facade with clock and allows full appreciation of the architectural purity and proportion of this dominant.

You can easily reach Žamberka by car and public transport, and you can easily find specific connections in normal traffic search engines. Town Hall is located in the central part of the city, so it is easily accessible from any access direction by pleasant walking.

For your tour, wear comfortable shoes suitable for city tiles and photographic equipment. A wide-angle lens is best suited to capture an entire single-storey building with a high valb roof. The ideal photographic station is located in sufficient distance on the square area, where the symmetry of the building and its installation in the surrounding building will stand out.

Visit the town hall with a walk in the immediate surroundings, which form the Masaryk Square in Žamberk and the picturesque historical centre of the city. You can admire the preserved townhouse and enjoy the peaceful pace of the submountain residence.

Families with children are comfortable with a clear area of the square, which offers safe space to move without dense traffic. Children can enjoy watching the clock on the town hall tower and searching for architectural details on the facade during a light walk downtown.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring brings awakening nature around the town square, where the historical building of the town hall looks beautiful under a brighter sky and the sun's rays begin to warm up the ancient wall. In this period, you will appreciate lighter overwear, such as a quilted vest or coat, because the spring wind can be cold, although the sun is already growing. Since the building is constantly used for official and educational activities, outdoor admiration of architecture is the quietest early in the morning, when the city is only waking up and the streets surrounding this 17th century administrative structure are empty.

During the summer they play the main role of long days with sharp midday light, which contrasts sharply with deep shadows under the floorboards and adjacent trees in the adjacent city park. For summer walks through the historical centre, choose airy cotton clothes of bright colours and solid shoes on the historic pavement, the most appropriate time for shooting the city hall exteriors is late evening, when the warm light of the setting sun gives the façade a warm touch without the noon heat.

Autumn moons cover the city in melancholy moods, where morning fog slowly retreats and reveals Renaissance city hall shields surrounded by falling golden leaves from surrounding trees. On the autumn tour, make yourself comfortable with a waterproof jacket and solid shoes, because the morning dew and occasional showers can slide on the old stone sidewalks. The ideal time to visit the exteriors is in the morning, when the fog falls, but the city is not yet full of people rushing to their duties in the authorities and schools.

The winter season turns the whole area into a fairy tale landscape, where the snow blanket quietly covers the roof of the town hall and the cold sun reflects from frozen puddles in the square. Do not forget to dress in several warm layers, including wool hat, scarves and winter shoes with anti-slip sole, because the square is usually slippery. The most beautiful atmosphere is this place at dusk, when the first street lamps light up and create magical shadows on the historical facade of the building serving its purpose.
