Řihákův mlýn, also known as Hamž, is a water mill in the cadastral territory of the municipality of Dolní Heřmanice in the district of Ždár nad Sázavou. The construction dates from the 17th century and is registered in the Central List of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic. It excels with its architecture, historical equipment and a unique wooden saw.

The mill was built around 1640. Historical sources suggest that it was probably built by the miller Hamza, the first written mention from 1668. At the time of the construction, the reconstruction took place in the Czech Republic after the 30-year war and the country sought economic regeneration.

The building has a two-storey floor plan in the shape of the letter L. The ground floor is decorated with quarry stone and carved blocks. A non-burnt brick was used on the floor, which was partially replaced with burnt brick when repaired in 1963. The outer walls are 1 to 1.2 meters thick, the inner walls reach up to 90 centimeters. The roof is saddled with burnt forgeries. On the ground floor there are beam ceilings, on the floor with living rooms there are flat ceilings. One of the beams in the nobility shed shows the date 1872.

The Hamž family owned the mill from its origin until 1891. It was subsequently owned by Emanuel Ziffer, since 1892 Jindřich Jedlička and between 1905-1922 JUDr. Richard Baratta Dragono. Since 1922, he's been in possession of the Rihuan family. The building was rebuilt to its present form at the end of the 19th century. In 1905, it burned down after a lightning strike, but it was repaired. Further reconstruction took place in 1963.

The technical equipment includes two grinding chairs for rye, a double wheat stool of the company Crane of the Great Mezirich from 1920 and a scrapping stool on the ground floor. A water wheel, a scrapping machine, a sifting device, a prism sifter, a wooden peel and cylindrical stool were preserved. After World War II, František Rihák installed the Francis turbine for mill drive and Kaplan for saw; both are functional. In addition to the main building there is a simple wooden object with unique equipment of a single leaf saw (so-called one leaf saw) from 1775. The whole saw mechanism, including the frame, is made of wood.

In the vicinity of the mill along the river Záslava there is a educational trail of Balinsky and the Fortune Valley, the bicycle route no. 5109 and the yellow tourist route from the Festival to the Great Meziříčí. There is also a protected historical lime tree.

This historical object represents a valuable sample of miller techniques and traditional architecture in the valley of the Festival. It is a suitable destination for visitors interested in history and nature.

Welcome to Lower Hermanice. You've just stopped at a place that carries a vast number of stories, silent memories and the power of flowing water. You are standing in front of the Rihak Mill, a building that has been watching over this valley for centuries and is a solid part of the local landscape. Before you go any further, try to stop for a moment, soak up the atmosphere of this place and see how time has stopped. Before your eyes is a building that is not just a simple house, but a living witness to the changes that have befallen this area from the time of the Baroque to today.

Let's look together at how this mill came into being. His history is not just a simple list of years, it's a story about lasting and people trying to use nature's power for their lives. The roots of this place go deep into the past, namely 1640. Imagine a world back then, a world much slower and simpler, where the mill was the heart of every village, where people met and where the basic crop for survival was processed. The first paper trail that tells us about this place dates back to 1668. In that year the first name of Hamza miller appears in the documents, which is assumed to be the true builder and founder of the original mill. It is he who has laid the foundations of a tradition that persists in this place today.

Although the base of the mill is much older than you might think at first glance, the building you are currently observing has undergone a fundamental transformation. At the end of the nineteenth century, the mill was rebuilt into the form you're seeing right now. This reconstruction gave him a more modern look at the time and provided him with stability, making the mill an important point in the Dolní Heřmanice. Its historical value is so undeniable that since 1970 it has been registered in the Central List of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic. It means that every brick and beam you see here is protected as a rare legacy of our ancestors.

Now pay attention to the architecture of the building itself. If you look at it from a certain distance, you can see its specific ground plan. The mill is not built in a simple square, but it has the shape of an L. This construction gives him an interesting character and allows him to decompose the space to meet the demanding demands of the water mill. The building has two floors, which adds a whole to its importance and robustness. Feel the mass and stability that the building radiates.

If you look towards the courtyard now, you can see the perfect shed. Notice the details of the wooden structures that dominate here. It is these elements, such as massive beams, that remind us of how buildings capable of resisting water and relentless time were built in the past. Every detail, from the structure of the walls to the layout of the space, tells about the craftsmanship of the people who worked here.

But the history of this place is much more than just a story of wood and stone. It's mostly the story of people. For centuries, the mill has been home to various families and personalities who have left their mark. In addition to the mentioned miller Hamza, who started here, other names appear in the history of the mill. We meet names like Emanuel Ziffera or Jindřich Jedlička in documents. The mill was also connected to a character which is JUDr. Richard Baratta Dragono. And of course we must not forget the rod Řiháků, according to which the mill bears its current name. Each of these names represents one chapter in the long chronicle of this place. Imagine their daily efforts, their joys and worries that took place in these walls, while the water constantly flowed around the mill wheel and formed a rhythmic foundation for their lives.

It's fascinating to see this place change. What was once the Hamž Mill became the Rihak Mill over time. This transformation of names and owners is like layering history where every new era doesn't overlap the previous one, but builds on it. It is a constant process of duration, where the old and the new join together in one whole.

Now, however, I will not keep you any longer. I hope this brief insight into the past inspired you to explore again. Řihákův mlýn is just one of many points that make up the rich fabric of the history of this region. Continue to walk, feel the surrounding countryside and enjoy the peace and beauty of this place. I wish you a pleasant continuation of the tour and enjoy every moment you spend in these historic surroundings. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

For the best experience we recommend a visit during the spring blossom or during the autumn colour ripening of leaves, when the surrounding nature most complements the atmosphere of the historical mill. At these times, light is the most suitable for capturing a calm and authentic mood for water.

You can reach the mill by car and public transport; check the current connection in the internet traffic search engine.

For lovers of photography are the best moments of morning or evening light that highlight the details of old wood and glitter on the surface. Don't forget to wear comfortable shoes, especially if you plan to take longer walks in the surrounding nature.

A combination of movement and discovery is ideal for families with children. In the surrounding area you can explore the educational trail of the Balinsky and the Shallow Valley, use the bicycle trail no. 5109 or take a walk along the yellow tourist path from the Festival to the Great Mezirich.
