Rodinný dům čp. 587 House

Rodinný dům čp. 587 in Hlučín is an interwar building from 1925. It was used to accommodate civil servants. The building is built in the spirit of Heimatstil and since 2008 it has been an official cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

After the First World War Hlučínsko was connected to the newly created Czechoslovakia and Hlučín became a district city. Teachers were called to provide teaching at Czech schools, especially from Moravia. However, suitable accommodation was missing. At first, temporary premises were used at Dean Richter's hospital or at the former Royal Prussian Customs Office, which led to the need to start housing. At the initiative of the Commissioner of the Czechoslovak Republic for Ratibořsko, the Prague Ministry of Social Welfare authorised the Silesian Government to acquire the land and develop the project. The documentation approved by the Ministry of Public Works was submitted on 5 October 1922 by the Chief Building Council of the Regional Office in Opava Hans Kalitta.

The construction was created as part of a set of three houses near Dr. Edvard Beneš (formerly Railway station) and the perpendicular Tyršova street. House No. 587, marked as House A, formed with House B a ground plan in the shape of the letter L. They were connected by half the side facade. The entrance facade with central risalite is oriented towards Dr. Edvard Beneš Street. The whole building is a two-storey brick building with underpanes and soil apartments. The broken valb roof was covered with Bonn shingles. There were seven chimneys, skylights and five rectangular skylights. On the front and rear sides are shield mansards.

The facades are in a rough plaster, supplemented by decorative elements made of smooth plaster or stucco and profiled crown and cordon ledge. The windows are mainly rectangular. In the facade they are grouped, while on the ground floor in the outermost axes and on the side facades they have a semi-circular decorative supersferer. The property of the Railway Street was defined by a stone wall with balustrade and regularly repeated balls.

The house was built for civil servants within the administrative and cultural integration of newly acquired territories. He originally formed a complex with two other houses. House C stood near the house B and separated it from it through the gate into the yard. However, only the house no. 587 was selected as a cultural monument from the entire three buildings.

The monument represents an important example of interwar architecture in Hlučín. It reminds of the period of construction of Czechoslovak infrastructure and education. Its preservation allows the study of the Heimattel style in a local context.

The object is a valuable witness to the history of Hlučínsk and its integration into the new state. We recommend to visit it while walking through the city as an example of the functional and aesthetic architecture of the first republic.
