The fall on the bearing Žebranka in the village Heřmanovice in the district of Bruntál is a historic mining work. It is evidenced by medieval mining and modern intervention and in 1994 it became a state-protected cultural monument. This location on the eastern slope of the Cross Hill represents an important evidence of the development of mining in Silesia while serving as a refuge for bats.

Less written reports have survived on the oldest history of medieval mining, but the site itself is a direct indication of this era. Historical sources suggest that the old tradition of mining ore in this area resembles preserved remnants of piles, chimneys and estuaries. These remains form the basis of the entire complex on the bearing Žebračka.

The shape of the mine is made up of ancient medieval remains and modern space created by a method of chamber on the area about 300 times 200 meters. In modern history, the site was part of the ore Zlaté Hora - south, where monometallic ore mining took place. Following subsequent modifications, which included shooting down the east wall and storing inert waste, the depth of the sinkhole decreased. Currently this cultural monument is secured by fencing and camera system.

The key events of modern history include the mining of monometallic ores between 1965 and 1968. On 3 April 1985, the ceiling of one of the underground chambers collapsed. This created an oval sinkhole with original dimensions 60 times 30 times 50 meters and a depth of 65 meters, which revealed old stals and exploratory chimney. On 15 August 1994, the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic declared the forfeiture a cultural monument. In 2011, later developments resulted in the Order of the Czech Mining Office to fill up the sinkhole, from which, however, after the intervention of the conservation authorities and the request of the State firm DIAMO was abandoned.

Today the location is located to the right of the road II / 445 leading from Zlatých Hor to Heřmanovice. The sinkhole acts as a distinctive aesthetic element in the landscape while at the same time performing the function of ecological refuge of many species of bats.

Visiting this place offers a unique view of the specific consequences of mining activity in Czech countries. Come see this interesting testimony of the mining past on the eastern slope of the Cross Hill.

Welcome! You are standing right in front of a unique and historically rich landmark - a trap on the bearing Žebráčka in Heřmanovice, which witnessed the medieval heritage of mining. Underneath your feet is an oval sinkhole, whose creation resembles the dramatic moment of 1985 when the ceiling of one of the underground chambers fell after modern mining. This view of the abyss is not only a visual, but also a historic journey into the past.

Let's dive into the origin and historical context of this place. Medieval mining took place here a long time ago, when Zebráčka was the center for ore mining. From 1965 to 1968, modern mining of monometallic ore took place here as part of the ore of the Zlaté Hora - south, which contributed to the emergence of this sinkhole. In 1994, Zebračka was declared a cultural monument of the Czech Republic, making it an officially protected historical site.

Now pay attention to the architectural remains. In front of you are remnants of piles and chimneys that were part of the mine site. Although specific details are not specified in the background, you might notice an estuary that shows the complexity and extent of mining work. These elements are part of what he left to medieval carpenters and miners.

Although specific historical personalities are not listed, the monument reminds many anonymous workers who worked in the dark underground. Their efforts and skills are behind every element of this place.

The interesting thing that can surprise you is the fact that the sinkhole serves as a haven for various species of bats. This ecological aspect adds importance instead of another layer and shows its importance not only from a historical but also from a natural point of view.

This place offers many possibilities for further exploration. Take a look around and let your view sail among the history that this abyss keeps. Whether it is an interest in the history of mining, nature or simply the beauty of remote places, Heřmanovice and their monument on the bearing Žebráčka certainly bind you.

Thank you for your visit to this historic monument. We hope you enjoyed your stay here and remember this place with enthusiasm. Whether you choose to explore or do anything else, have a nice day!

Tips for visitors

To visit this historic site it is best to choose spring or autumn months when the surrounding forests on the slopes of the Cross Hill offer a unique atmosphere and the terrain is not overgrown by lush summer vegetation. Take with you fixed waterproof shoes suitable for the forest, warm clothes and plenty of drinking water, because you will not find any shops or refreshments around the old red area. For photography lovers, this old mine sinkhole offers great shots especially in the morning, when side sunlight penetrates the trees and highlights the inequality of the terrain and remains of medieval mining on the eastern slope. In the nearby area within 30 minutes of the trip you can visit other interesting places in the area of the former Zlaté Hora ore region - the south, which directly follow the history of mining in the region.

This type of historical site represents a specific terrain and therefore families with children must take care to be more careful and hold the children by hand throughout their stay in order to avoid falling into inequalities in the soil.

When shooting a monument, we recommend using a wide-angle lens that can capture the extent of the entire prolapling body in the forest on the slope of the Cross Hill. The best light conditions to capture the depth and shape of field depression are in the morning, when the sun creates shadows along the edges of the mining tracks.

When planning your trip to this part of Bruntálska, remember to take into account that you are moving in nature and the forest environment where the weather can change quickly. Therefore, keep a waterproof jacket and raincoat in reserve in case of a sudden shower in the mountain terrain.

2. Eastern slope of the Cross Hill Type: Natural and historical area Why is it worth a visit: The vast slope over the road hides a rich mining past and extensive traces of earlier ore mining.

3. The Red Area of Golden Mountain - South Type: Historical area Why is it worth a visit: It is a vast area associated with deep-sea metal mining, where many remains of mining activity have been preserved.

4.Rudný důl - propadlina na ložisku Žebračka Type: Main objective Why is it worth a visit: It is located directly on the eastern slope of the Cross Hill in the area of the former red area of Zlaté Hora - south on the right side of the road leading from Zlaté Hor to Hřmanovice. This distinctive terrain trap is an interesting and visible consequence of historical mining activity.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring: In the spring season, the Red Mine is lit by sunlight, which shines on the abyss and surrounding landscape, bringing living color to the forest. This time of year offers quiet moments without excessive crowds, allowing a relaxed tour of the historical monument. Visitors are advised to wear clothes at variable temperature because spring weather can suddenly be cold or warm. The best time to visit is in the semi-deck, when the sun illuminates the abyss and surrounding nature in its full bloom.

Summer: Summer brings long days with long daylight, which allows for inspections in the best lighting. The warm sunlight increases the atmosphere of the sinkhole on Žebra and surrounding forest areas offer shelter from the sun. This season the attendance may be higher, therefore we recommend visiting in the early morning hours or later in the evening. It is advisable to wear light clothes and a sun-proof coat. Don't forget to bring drinking water to relax and enjoy warm weather.

Autumn: In autumn, the ore mine gains melancholic beauty of flower leaves, which turns into live coloring. Sunny days are still common and provide optimal conditions for photography or just enjoying nature around the abyss. Autumn is a period of lower attendance, which allows a peaceful tour without unnecessary crowd pressure. We recommend wearing more layers of clothing because of cooler evenings and the possibility of rainy weather. The best times for visiting are at the beginning of the day or later in the afternoon.

Winter: Winter Red Mine offers unique views, where the abyss and surroundings cover the snow. The sun shines on the white climate, creating a calm and quiet atmosphere. This season, the attendance rate is usually lower, allowing for an intensive tour without unnecessary crowd pressure. It is important to have a suitable durable suit against cold and snow, including warm shoes and protective shears. The best times for visiting are during the sun days when it is possible to enjoy winter beauty without the risk of freezing or sharp changes in weather.
