The column of the Holy Trinity in Žatci is a monumental Baroque monument from 1707-1713, which dominates the central space of the Square of Liberty. This so-called cloud column was erected to protect against plague epidemics. In the Czech environment it represents a relatively rare type of sculpture work symbolizing the connection of heaven and earth.

The will of local pharmacist Johann Clemens Calderar is behind the creation of nearly 20 meters of high monument. He referred the funds obtained by selling his pharmacy to build this monument. Other townspeople also participated in the financing of the construction, as evidenced by cartouche with chronograms on the sculptures. The main author of the column was the lithomeric sculptor František Tollinger. In 1735, the building was supplemented by other elements by the sculptor Jan Karel Vetter.

The architectural and artistic solution is diverted from the usual slender columns or obelisks. It is a massive triangular log densely covered with stylized clouds, among which are placed angels' heads. This form directly refers to the Bible book Exodus, where the Lord led the Israelites through the desert in the form of a cloud pillar. The entire composition is grafting towards the top. Here, the heads turn into whole figures of angels supporting the cloud mass with the great copper cross and the statue of the Holy Trinity. This is depicted in a traditional iconographic concept with the seated God of the Father, Jesus on his right and the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove.

The base of the column consists of a several-stage stylobat on the floor plan of an equilateral triangle on which lies the stage with a plinth. Three volute wings carrying statues of angels are attached to the corners of the plinth. On the west side of the pedestal is placed cartouche with chronogram and coat of arms of the donor. It contains a relief depicting pharmacist Calderara and his wife praying to the Virgin Mary.

The whole monument is complemented by balustrados set with statues of saints and two angels. Among the depicted figures can be recognized St. John of Nepomuk, St. Charles of Boromei, St. Prokop, St. Anthony of Paduan, St. Joseph of Pez with Jesus, St. Wenceslas, St. Zikmund and St. Florian. This set of saints was meant to protect the city and its inhabitants from diseases and natural disasters.

The column of the Holy Trinity in Žatci is now a valuable proof of baroque urbanism and artistic sensations of the early eighteenth century. For its unconventional cloud form and rich sculpture decoration, it represents a unique example of period godliness. Its symbolism and dimensions still form an unimaginable dominant feature of the historical core of the city.

Welcome to the historic heart of Žatec. You've just stopped at something that must immediately impress you with its unusual form and monumental size. You're standing right in front of the Column of the Greatest Trinity. Imagine looking at him for the first time, as his almost 20-meter-tall figure sticks to the sky. It is a baroque jewel that carries incredible strength and deep spiritual meaning. Feel the atmosphere where history meets art. This monument is not just a stone building; It's the symbol that's supposed to link the human, the earthly, to the celestial. Look at him as a whole, as his massive body emerges from the surroundings and dominates the entire space. To fully understand why this monument is standing right here, we need to go back together to 300 years ago. Imagine a city in the years seventeen hundred seven to seventeen hundred thirteen. It was a time of uncertainty and fear. People then faced an invisible enemy who brought death and despair - plague epidemics. This column was not built for decoration or display of wealth. It was an expression of deep faith and a sign of protection for the whole city. He was supposed to be a spiritual shield that would make the heavens protect the people from disease. It is this need for protection and hope that has led to its creation and to it being so monumental. Now pay attention to his unusual architecture. If you look up, you'll notice that this column doesn't have a classic, simple or rough shape. It's a so-called cloud column. Its form resembles constantly flowing and floating clouds. In this stone matter, angels and clouds are carved, creating a fascinating impression that the heavens themselves are touching the earth. It's a master baroque expression of the link between Heaven and Earth. Notice how these shapes intersect, and it appears that stone matter is turning into something light and intangible. This visual element creates an incredible feeling that the boundary between worlds is very thin. The master of František Tollinger and Jan Karel Vetter were created. And although the main part was created in the early eighteenth century, the work was not finished immediately. In seventeen hundred thirty-five, the sculptor Jan Karel Vetter came and supplemented the whole with other important elements, helping to create the rich and rich form you see right now. Also, look at the massive triangular sling. It is densely covered with stylized shapes that provide a whole of dynamics and movement, which is typical of the Baroque period. These shapes lead your vision up to the very top where it meets the heavens. Not only art, but also very strong human stories are behind this magnificent work. Who all helped build this monument? It wasn't just the state or the church. They were human hands and human hearts. One of the most important stories concerns the local pharmacist. Imagine the man who spent his life treating people and knowing the suffering that brought disease. He decided to use his property for something eternal. From the funds he obtained through the sale of his pharmacy, this pharmacist helped finance the creation of a whole pillar. But it wasn't just his intervention. Other townspeople were involved in the construction, who wanted to ensure the safety of their city. It's a beautiful story about how science, represented by a pharmacist, came together with deep faith and a community spirit. The name Johann Clemens Calderar appears in the history of this place, which adds another layer of historical importance to this place. The interesting thing is how much this monument makes a living impression. Even if it's made of solid material, thanks to the cloud form and the angels, it seems that it can move or fly to heaven at any time. His height, almost 20 meters, makes you constantly change your perspective to understand his whole beauty and complexity. It is a monumental baroque trivial column that belongs to the most important of its kind throughout the region. Now you can take a free walk through the city Žatec. Let yourself drift through the atmosphere of these historic streets and continue to discover the secrets that this city holds within you. Thank you for spending this moment with us at this extraordinary monument. Enjoy the rest of your trip.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring - After a winter's sleep, the green oasis is spread around the pillar, with the first heather and linden flowers adding a soft, scattered light that highlights the details of the bronze statue. The morning clock is the quietest, the crowd is still gathering after noon, so it is convenient to come early when it is still cold and the air is fresh. A light jacket or sweater, solid shoes for slippery lawns and preparation for occasional spring rain is recommended.

Summer - In the summer months, the pillar obtains bright, direct sunlight, which underlines the contrast between the stone base and the golden reflection of bronze. In the morning it can be hot and the sun intense, therefore it is most pleasant to visit the memory early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the temperature is softer and shadows longer. It is convenient to wear a hat, sunglasses, light clothes and have water to avoid overheating.

Autumn - When the leaves of the trees pass into golden and red shades, the pillar receives a warm autumn feel and the light in the late afternoon spreads out with a soft golden light. Colder weather and mild wind attract fewer visitors, so it is possible to enjoy a quieter atmosphere. It is recommended layered clothing, warmer sweater or jacket, or scarf, and comfortable shoes because autumn leaves can be slippery.

Winter - In winter the pillar is surrounded by white landscape, snow and low sun angle create dramatic shadows and cool but clean atmosphere. Short days and fast dimming mean that the best time is noon, when the sun is highest and the lighting is brightest. The visitor should wear a warm coat, hat, gloves and tight shoes with anti-slip soles to avoid frozen surfaces and remain warm.
