The column with the statue of the Virgin Mary in Jindřichov is a unique baroque Marian column in Manzlažska, located at the main entrance to the castle in the district of Bruntál. This monumental Baroque work was created in 1757 and is protected as a cultural monument entered into the Central List of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic.

The statue was created at the initiative of Countess Cordula Bartenstein. The design was created by the Krnov builder Georg Friedrich Gans, the sculpture was made by the sculptor Václav Heinisch and the author of polychrome was the Krnov painter Josef Wolf. At the time of the creation of the work, in the second half of the 18th century, the Baroque artistic revival took place, which was reflected in architecture and sculpture within the then Europe and Bohemia.

The architectural unit has a low plinth and prism base, which is divided in corners by pilasters with volute heads and continuous ledge. The individual fields of the pedestal are decorated with reliefs depicting St. John of Nepomuk's confessing queen, St. Rosalie, St. Theresa's vision and the resurrection of St. Lazarus. Segment shields pass over the reliefs, beneath which are hung rokaj cartouche containing the characters of Jan Kryštof from Barteinstein. On the continuous ledge in the corners stands the figures of the saints of Shebastian, Rocha, Ignatius and Karl Boromei. From the pedestal, the chamber needle ends with a volute header on which the globe is wrapped by a snake. On the globe stands in the contrast of the Virgin Mary in a rich wavy garment with hands on her breast.

The fate of the sculpture involves several restoration works. In 1957- 1958 the work was restored by academic sculptor Aleš Rozedral from Ostrava and further restoration was completed in 2003. In 1958, the building was registered as a cultural monument.

This Marian column represents a rare preserved Baroque element in the region of Manzlažsko. It is an important witness to contemporary art and is worth a visit to interested people about history and Baroque sculpture.

Welcome to Jindřichov, where history meets the silence of the landscape and where every stone tells its own story. Stop for a moment, take a breath and feel the atmosphere of this place. Right now, you're facing one of the most important symbols of local faith and art. In front of you is a monumental column with the statue of the Virgin Mary. It's the first thing that welcomes you at the main entrance to the castle here, and her presence here is not random. Notice how dominant this column controls the space around it, and how with its height it forces you to lift your eyes to the sky. It's a work that carries the spirit of its time, the pride of aristocracy and the precise craftsmanship of the masters who created it.

Let us now return together in time more than two hundred years back to the mid-eighteenth century. It's year seven hundred and fifty-seven. At this time, the countryside was different, but the desire for beauty and the expression of respect for celestial powers was as strong as today. It was this year that this pillar was created, thanks to the initiative of a very important woman, Countess Kordula Bartenstein. Imagine her as a strong personality of her age, who wanted to leave a mark in the form of a work that would serve not only as a religious symbol, but as an aesthetic jewel for the entire community. It is her vision and support that has made this project a reality and that it can stand before you today in all its glory.

Now pay attention to the very form of the column. You stand before a typical representative of the Baroque style. The Baroque is an época of contrasts, dynamics and magnificence, and you will find all this in this work. Look up and perceive the overall composition. The column is not just a simple building element, it is a complex sculpture work. The collaboration of three talented men, each of which brought something different to the project, was behind its creation. The first was the Krnov builder Georg Friedrich Gans, who prepared the design and ensured the overall construction. He was the one who determined how the column would work in space and how stable it would be.

When the foundation was ready, the sculptor Václav Heinisch entered the game. It was his hands that breathed life into the stone and created the sculpture that you admire today. Note the details of the sculpture work, the ripple of the dress and the expression of the characters. Baroque sculpture did not seek to make a harsh realism, but to express emotion and movement, which is known in this work. And as if it wasn't enough, the artist Josef Wolf intervened. Its task was called polychromia, which in simple words is the color design of statues and elements of the column. Colors in the Baroque era were used to make the work work work more alive, more comprehensible and to impress anyone who looked at it. Although the time of color changed, in them you can still feel the pursuit of perfection and celebration of celestial glory.

Try to realize now how unique this column is within the whole of persona. While in other areas, Marian columns are a common sight, here in Jindřichov it is a real unique one. It is one of the very few baroque works of this type throughout the region, which makes it not only a religious object, but an invaluable historical document. Standing at the entrance to the castle gives the whole place a special feel. The column works here as a guardian who welcomes visitors and reminds them that they enter the space where the life of the nobles with spiritual reflections was once blended.

But the history of this column is not only about its creation, but also about the fight against time. The stones and colors are prone to the effects of weather, wind and precipitation. In order to admire it today, it was necessary to take care of it. The first major intervention in the form of restoration took place nine hundred and fifty-seven in the year, namely exactly two hundred and fifty years after its position. It was an important wake-up call that helped her survive the next decade. Several years later, in the year nine hundred and fifty-eight, the column was officially registered as a cultural monument, recognising its extraordinary value for national heritage. Another thorough reconstruction followed in the year two thousand and three, when experts made sure once again that the details of the sculpture work and the remains of the colour design were preserved for future generations.

When you look at a column, you might be wondering how many people have passed it in all these centuries. How many prayers were spoken here, how many views were directed upwards and how many generations of people Jindřichova perceived this column as a natural part of their home. He is a silent witness to events that have long gone silent, but their echoes are still present in this stone. It is fascinating to think that the collaboration of builder Gans, sculptor Heinisch and painter Wolfe, under the leadership of Countess Bartenstein, created something that survived wars, regime changes, and adverse weather.

Now look again at the entire structure of the distance. Feel the Baroque elegance of the column added to the surrounding castle. It's harmony that teaches us patience and respect for the craft. In today's hasty times, such a monument is a reminder that real quality and art require time, vision and courage to create something that will survive us alone.

I hope this short trip to history has helped you see this column in a new light. It's not just a piece of worked stone, but a materialized belief, ambition and talent of the 18th century people. Now invited to further explore. In front of you opens the way to the castle and the surrounding area, where you will find other discoveries and stories. Let yourself be guided by your curiosity and enjoy every moment you spend in this beautiful corner of Personality. Thank you for accompanying me to this monument, and I wish you a pleasant continued journey. Say good-bye to the column with your last look up and then meet new experiences. Goodbye.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the surrounding area is awakening to life and the young green creates a fresh set for stone details. The light is fine in this period, which helps to better capture the fine features of the statues. We recommend dressing in layers because the morning cold can still be felt, and hit the road right after sunrise.

Summer months bring bright sun and rich colors of surrounding nature that highlight the monumental nature of the monument. The atmosphere is playful and full of energy, typical of the main holiday season. It is advisable to choose light, breathable clothes and visit to plan for early morning or late evening hours when the temperature is more pleasant.

Autumn covers the space around the Marian pole with golden and red notes of leaves, which gives the place a melancholy touch. Foggy wounds can create a mysterious mood, while the afternoon sun hits the surface of the stone beautifully. The practical shoe is moisture resistant and a warm sweater that protects against the cold wind.

In winter, the monument is very peaceful and its tones contradict any layer of snow. In advent time, there is a strange, quiet atmosphere that encourages thought. Don't forget to wear warm gloves, hat and tight shoes so that the frost doesn't prevent you from looking at this outdoor object.
