The Baroque statue of Persea, located on the banks of the river Bystřice in the village Dohalice in the district of Hradec Králové, is a unique cultural monument object of the Czech Republic. This sandstone statue represents the ancient hero Persea and is protected as a cultural monument under register number SAR 41517 / 6-701. The statue is the rest of the former park at the castle in Sadova which burned down and was subsequently demolished in 1844.

The location of the Perseus statue in Baroque style, a period known for its dramatic character and its rich decoration, highlights its historical importance. Even though the statue is unknown, its prism base of sandstone blocks with a profiled ledge reflects the baroque taste of the times. A statue of life-long size represents Persea in ancient armor, with a helmet on his head, a cloak and a sword. In his right hand holds an iron spear, the left holds a shield decorated with the relief of Medusa's head. There's a snake in the statue that's about to eat a frog.

The history of the statue is closely linked to the former park at the castle in Sadová, part of the wider cultural and historical context, where the Baroque style plays an important role in building and art in Bohemia during the 17th and 18th centuries. The park to which the statue belonged burned down in 1844 and was subsequently demolished.

Socha Persea is today protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic and attracts attention by its location on the banks of the river Bystřice. Its historical value is that it is the only remnant of the former park and represents a baroque artistic style. Visitors can appreciate its architectural details and historical context, which makes this statue an important monument.

Socha Persea stands as a witness to the rich cultural heritage of Bohemia. Its location on the bank of the river Bystřice adds to its importance a beautiful natural location, making it a place worthy of visiting for every curiosity of history and art.

Socha Persea is not only a monument to Baroque art, but also witnessed changes in the landscape and culture of the Dohalice region. Its presence on the bank of the river Bystřice gives this location a unique character and attracts visitors who want to explore the history and art of the Czech Republic.

Welcome to the village Dohalice. You just stopped by one of the most important cultural treasures in this place. You are standing here, by the banks of the river Bystřice, where the water quietly flows past the stones and creates a peaceful environment for meeting history. In front of your eyes is the statue of Perseus. Please feel this moment when you stop moving and let your eyes and mind enter a world that was created centuries ago. The first impression of this statue is the feeling of resilience and duration. This figure, carved from a solid sandstone, stands here as a silent witness for many years, which flowed around it, while the river Bystřice continues to flow in the same way as when this hero was first built on his pedestal.

Let us now move together in time and understand why this work is so extraordinary. In order to understand the meaning of this statue, we need to look at the time it was created. We are in an era where the Baroque style was dominated by Czech countries, especially in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. At that time, art was full of motion, emotion and effort to express greatness. Although the exact date of creation of this particular work remains in the fog of history, its style clearly leads us back to these times when artists were trying to capture heroism and divine power. This statue is not just a stone object, it is a representative of an entire epoch that shaped the face of our landscapes and our understanding of beauty.

Now pay attention to the details you have right in front of you. Look at the statue itself. It's a life-size character, which means her presence is strong and she's acting like a real person who just materialized in a sandstone. Notice how ancient hero Perseus is captured. He has a helmet on his head that gives him a serious and bold expression, and he holds an iron spear in his hand, a symbol of his strength and his readiness to fight. Every notch in the stone and every line of his character tells us about his heroic nature. Now look a little lower to what the statue stands on. Perseus is placed on a prism base. Notice its shape and also the profiled ledge that forms the upper part of this base. This ledge gives stability to the whole character and acts as an elegant frame for this whole art. The sandstone from which the statue is made has its specific texture that carries traces of time and the smell of the earth.

When you look at this statue, you might wonder how it got to us. It's a fascinating and sad story about losing and surviving. This statue wasn't always a lonely piece of art on the banks of the river. She was part of something much bigger and richer. It belonged to an old park near the castle in Sadova. Imagine the space, full of greenery, paths and works of art that used to decorate this neighborhood. Unfortunately, history was cruel in 1844. There was a big event when the former park burned down at the castle and was then destroyed. Everything that's been made up for years has been lost in a short time. But this statue of Perseus is one of the few remains that were saved. He's a survivor from the former world, a silent fragment of ancient glory that allows us to imagine this extinct space at least partially.

Even if you're looking at a masterpiece, there's one big mystery in its history. Although this statue is so detailed and impressive, its author remains unknown. We don't know what hands were holding the chisel or what ideas led the creator to carve this very hero in this very place. However, this anonymity does not mean that the work is less valuable. On the contrary, it gives him a certain timeliness. Perseus stands here without a name, as if he were part of nature itself and this place. Yet its importance to our country is clearly defined. This statue is an officially recognized cultural monument of the Czech Republic and is protected by the law under a specific registration number that confirms its insufficiencies for our heritage.

So not only is there a statue of an ancient hero before you, but also a symbol of resistance to time and misfortune. It is a combination of baroque art, ancient mythical traditions and tragic history of the local castle. Every detail, from the helmet on the head to the profiled ledge of the pedestal, recalls that even if parks can collapse and gardens can burn, real art can last centuries.

Thank you for your time and attention to this historic monument. Now that you know more about what you see, we recommend you continue your walk along the river Bystřice. Feel the calm of this place and be inspired by the history that is around you everywhere. We will brighten you with pleasant further tours of our beautiful landscapes and continue to enjoy the beauty of this day.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is during bright days, especially in the afternoon, when soft light beautifully highlights the details of sandstone material sculpture.

Take the drinking water and comfortable shoes suitable for outdoor movement.

For the best photos, use the closeness of the stream, which gives the images depth and natural frame.

It is advisable for families with children to prepare for outdoor activities near water, but always with regard to safety.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring: In the spring, life awakens around the Perseus statue and the surrounding landscape gains a fresh green color. Light is soft in this period and very pleasant to observe details. I recommend wearing layered clothes because the morning cold can quickly change on a warmer day. The best time to visit is in the morning when crowds of tourists are still small and the air is fresh.

Summer: In the summer months the sun is the strongest and the colors of the monument seem very bright and intense. Days are long, but high temperatures can be challenging. In the high summer season it is best to arrive first thing in the morning to avoid the biggest crowds and heat. Dress lightly, use your headgear and don't forget to drink to keep your strength up.

Autumn: Autumn brings golden shades of leaves and occasional morning mist to the space around Dohalice, creating a calm and melancholy atmosphere. Lighting is ideal for photography during this period due to lower sun position. It is advisable to carry a windbreaker or warmer layer, as afternoon cooling can be impact. The number of visitors is decreasing gradually, bringing more privacy.

Winter: Zimą is a quiet, lonely and cold atmosphere. The days are short and the light is rather grey, which underlines the shape of the statue in a cool environment. It is necessary to wear very warm clothes, including hat and gloves. The opening time is shorter in this period, so check in advance. The main advantage is the almost zero presence of other people.
