The Baroque sandstone statue of St. John Nepomuk from 1723 stands in the village Kameničky in the district of Chrudim at the former cemetery near the Church of the Holy Trinity. This work of the important regional sculptor Jan Albert Devota is protected as a real cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

The statue was created in 1723 at the time of the flowering of Baroque art and architecture. Emperor Charles VI ruled in Bohemia at the time. His Prague coronation as a Czech king is mentioned in the inscription in the monument. The author is Jan Albert Devota of Hippo Týnek.

The piece is made of sandstone. The saint is depicted in life size, dressed in traditional mascara with a biret on his head. His head is surrounded by a halo with five stars, holding a crucifix in his arms. The statue stands on the pillar, which is finished with a profiled ledge and optionally expanded at the bottom. It is placed on a low, top-profile prism pedestal. The front side of the pillar is decorated with embossed acantic motif with an eight-pointed star.

Originally, it was decorated together with the sandstone crucifix and the statue of St. Florian in 1779 with the decoration of Poděbradov Square in Hlinsk. After World War I, the whole group was moved to Kamenice. This is where the objects were divided. The statues of the saints today line the access path to the main entrance to the Church of the Holy Trinity, while the crucifix was placed outside the entrance gate to the premises.

An important detail is the inscription carved by the mauscula on the back of the pillar. It contains a chronogram in 1723 and states that the work was built to the honor of St. John by the expense of his faithful admirers from the cause of P. Matiege and Prokop, the then mayor. Since 1958 the statue and the church area have been protected as a real cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

The statue is currently standing on the east side of the road to the main entrance to the church. Its current state is the result of restaurants from 1999 and 2021.

This Baroque statue represents a valuable example of regional sculpture and historical link between Hlinsk and Kamenice. It is a suitable destination for visitors who are interested in sacral art.

Welcome to the village Kameničky. Right now, listening to these words, you're facing one of the rarest treasures in this place. Before your eyes is a Baroque statue of St. John Nepomuk, who in silence tells a story over 300 years old. Feel the atmosphere of this place that once served as a cemetery at the Church of the Holy Trinity. There's a sense of peace and history that intertwines with every stone in this area. Take a look at this statue, which is carved from sandstone, a material that is so typical of our region and which carries its own unmistakable texture and color. Now let's go back deep into the past to understand how this work came about. This statue is not just a work of art, it is a witness of ancient times. It was created in 1723, at a time when the Baroque controlled the souls and faces of men. At that time, this country was full of creators who could bring motion, emotion and deep faith into the stone. The author of this work is Jan Albert Devoty, an important regional sculptor who left a trail that we can admire here today. Devoty wasn't just a craftsman, he was an artist who understood how to capture sanctity and humanity in a hard sandstone. His work allows us to see a world that was full of religious excitement and artistic grandeur. Now pay attention to what you see right in front of you. Feel the size. The statue is depicted in life-size, which means that its presence seems very strong, almost as if a person was actually standing there looking at you. Notice how the statue holds a cross with the image of Jesus in its arms. This detail expresses a profound commitment and reminds us of the spiritual importance the statue had for the society at that time. And now look up to the head of the saint. See that beautiful halo? It is decorated with five stars, the most important and famous sign of St. John Nepomuk. These stars are a symbol of his holiness and are so characteristic of his image. Every detail, from the bending of the dress to the expression of the face, was carved with care, which was typical of Baroque sculpture. When you look at this statue, you might wonder why it's standing right here in this quiet place by the church. However, the story of this monument is much more dynamic than it seems at first sight. This statue has not always had its home here in Kamenice. Many years ago, after World War I, this monument was moved from the city of Hlinsko. There, in Podebrad Square, this statue was part of a rich decoration and was seen daily by hundreds of people walking through the city. It's fascinating to imagine the moment when a work of art had to leave its original place and find a new home in this village. This movement shows us how the face of our regions changed and how art moved according to the history of the world. There is also one very interesting thing that you should not forget. If you look closely at the inscription that is in the memory, you can find a reference to an event that has a huge significance for the whole country. The inscription mentions the Prague coronation of emperor Karl VI as a Czech king. This is an amazing connection that tells us that even this sculpture in a small place like Kameničky was linked to the greatest events of the empire and the power that took place in Prague at the time. This statue is not only a local treasure, but it is part of the wider history of our nation. For this statue to remain in such good condition for centuries, it required much care and effort. It's a real-estate cultural monument, which means her protection is important to all of us. In order for sandstone to stay in time, important repairs had to be made. The first large restaurant was held in 1999 and recently, in 2021, was carried out further thorough care for its appearance. Thanks to these works, we can see details today that might otherwise have disappeared under the influence of weather and time. It is proof that we value our heritage and try to pass it on to the next generation in the best possible form. Now that you've seen this baroque beauty and learned its secret, I suggest you continue your walk. Kameničky has many other secrets and beauty waiting for you. Feel the calm of this place, look at the surrounding buildings and let yourself drift through the atmosphere of this region. Thank you for spending this moment with this monument and for trying to see history with us. We wish you a beautiful continuing journey and many other interesting experiences in exploring our beautiful world. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is spring and autumn months. The soft light in these seasons excels best on the sandstone surface of the Baroque statue and highlights the details of its working.

Dojazd is possible by car and public transport; Check the current connection in the search engine.

For comfortable movement around the church we recommend shoes suitable for outdoor terrain. For families with children, a visit is an opportunity to get acquainted with Baroque art and the history of regional sculptors.

We recommend taking advantage of the morning or late afternoon sun, which creates deep shadows and emphasizes the plastic shapes of the statue. The best angles are from the space of the former cemetery, from where the statue is visible in the full context of the Church of the Holy Trinity.
