The Sokolovna in Chudenice is a cultural historical monument located on the northeast edge of the town Chudenice in Klatovy district. It is part of the landscape monument zone Chudenicko and was declared a cultural monument on 3rd August 2013. This falconry, built in the early 20th century, is an important place for physical activities and reflects architectural trends of its time.

The history of the falconry dates back to the First World War, when physical unity was established in Chudenice. After the war, it needed a more permanent place for exercise, which led to the creation of the Sokol Building Department in 1920. Evžen Černín z Chudenic, who gave Sokola land and building material at a bargain price, played a key role in the construction of the falcon. The original architectural plan was designed by Antonín Čechner, brother-in-law of Jaroslav Kvapil, but was eventually rejected and Josef Čížek took over the project management. The construction started in 1922 and followed by various complications, such as repairs of newly constructed ceilings. The completion of the construction was festively celebrated in 1923.

Architecturally, the falcon is a characteristic example of a functional style that reflects its original purpose as a place for physical activities. The building with a longitudinal floor plan stands at the intersection of Tyršov Street and the road to the village Býšov. The central element is the hall with a halibut roof which crosses two floors and is divided by transverse beams into five fields. The eastern part contains a stage with a trap and the projection cabin is hidden above the hall. In the middle of the roof there is a tower with a bell, which was partially removed during reconstruction. The facades are unfiltered except for the plinth and the lisen frames.

After World War II, the building was gradually abandoned, which led to its new use for dance entertainment. Since 1995, these activities have been moved to the pub hall and the falcon plant has started to show building defects that required frequent maintenance. In 2005, the Czech village donated the Sokol building to the local office and a study was carried out to save it in the years 2012- 2013.

The Sokolovna in Chudenice is today a cultural historical monument that attracts attention to its architectural significance and rich history. Its current status ensures the possibility of visiting and provides insight into the past of the local community. Exploring this monument is not only a way into history, but also an opportunity to appreciate the architectural artistic expression of the 20th century.

Sokolovna stands as a witness to an important period in the development of physical and community life in Bohemia. Its history, architecture and transformation over the years make it not only a cultural monument, but also an inspiration for those who want to understand the past of the region. The visit offers a unique view of how local communities develop and adapt to changes over time.

Welcome to Chudenice. You're standing right in front of a building that carries the incredible power of the past and has been the heart of this place for decades. In front of your eyes is Sokolovna, a place that is not just a wall and a roof, but a living witness to the transformation that this city and our whole country have been through. Feel the atmosphere, feel the calm that prevails here, and try to imagine the energy, the joy and the seriousness that have been poured into these spaces in the past. This building will tell you its story today, a story about the power of human will, an attempt to live healthy and how history can intertwine with every stone and every detail you see here.

Let's go back together to when everything started. More than a hundred years ago, between a thousand and nine hundred and fourteen and a thousand and nine hundred and eighteen, an effort for something much greater than simple exercise began to grow here. In Chudenice, physical unity was established, which was intended to strengthen not only the bodies of its members, but also their national consciousness and unity. It was a time of great change and building new values. This effort was so strong that already in the year one thousand and nine hundred and twenty, a special construction department had to be created to find and build a dignified mansion for this movement. And so it began to be planned, planned and prepared.

Now pay attention to the construction itself, which now seems so clear to you. The construction of this important building could start in a thousand and nine hundred twenty-two. Imagine the exciting expectations, the work of many people who believed they were creating something lasting. A year later, in the year one thousand nine hundred twenty-two three, the construction was completed and followed by a celebration of its opening. It was a moment of great pride for all the inhabitants of the village.

Now look at the architecture of this building. Notice the shape and purity of the lines. This construction is an excellent example of what we call a functional style. Architects Antonín Cechner and Josef Čížek designed the building to be useful and clear. In this style, we're not looking for unnecessary ornaments that just hinder movement or distract attention. Everything here has a clear purpose. Everything is designed to serve people and their activities. And it is this functionality that gives the building its unmistakable character.

Now look a little higher, where there is a strange tower above the building. Notice the bell tower. The bell wasn't just a decorative element. By the time the building was built, the sound of the bell was an important signal for the whole village. He was announcing the start of exercises, gatherings or important events. It was the voice of this building, a voice that connected people.

This great success, this construction, but it wasn't just an idea or a project. There were people behind him with their great deeds. One of the most important men in this story was Evžen Černín z Chudenic. His role was absolutely crucial. He was not only an observer, but a real supporter of this project. In fact, Evžen Černín gave land and construction material at a very advantageous price, allowing this great goal to become a reality. Without his kindness and his vision, this building may never have been created as you see it today. In these times, other important people, such as Jaroslav Kvapil, also moved here, indicating how high a cultural level this place should have been a part of.

But history is not just about beginnings and great achievements. It's also about change and how time changes. After World War II, the role of this building began to change. Instead of strict physical exercise and discipline, there was a different sound. The building became a place of social events, especially for dance entertainment. Imagine the nights when people would gather here to relax, dance and experience the joys and sorrows of their time together. This era of entertainment was an important part of life in the village, but with time the building began to gradually leave. The need for recovery and care has become urgent.

But now we must smile, because the story of this building also has its happy chapter. After years of uncertainty and gradual abandonment, fate decided to rebuild. In the year two thousand and five, the building was donated to the local office by the Czech obese Sokol, which returned its original meaning and provided care. And finally, on August 3rd, in the year two thousand and thirteen, this building was officially declared a cultural monument. This is proof that its value is immense for all of us and that we must protect it for future generations.

So there is a place before you that survived wars, changes in social conditions, and times of oblivion. There is a symbol of strength, health and community before you. Feel the building as a link between the past and the present. Every detail, from the bell tower to the clean lines of functional style, tells you about the people who lived here, worked and dreamed.

Thank you for taking the time and for stopping right here to learn more about this place. Let yourself be inspired by the beauty of the surroundings and continue to explore the history of Chudenice. Look at the building from other angles, see its presence and enjoy the rest of your trip. Goodbye.
