Špitálka Homestead

Špitálka is a historic estate located in Prague-Dejvice at Na Špitálce 12/17, near Hanspaulka Street. Its origins date back to the early 16th century when it was established as a vineyard with a winery built by Jiřík Koník in 1539. Known for its association with the Order of the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star, Špitálka holds significant historical value due to its long-standing connection to this religious order and its evolution from a productive vineyard into a residential building. The estate has been protected as a cultural monument since 1958, highlighting its importance in Prague's architectural and cultural heritage.

The origins of Špitálka trace back to the early 16th century when it was part of smaller consolidated vineyards. By 1539, Jiřík Koník had constructed a winery on the site, marking its documented history as an important agricultural and vinicultural center. The estate became known as Arcibiskupská vinice during Antonín Brus z Mohelnice's tenure after he acquired it in 1573. This period saw substantial development under his ownership, including vineyard expansion and winery improvements.

Throughout its history, Špitálka experienced several changes in ownership and fortune. Initially belonging to the Křižovnický klášter (Order of the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star), it was sold to Jan Komedek z Rovin in 1568 and later acquired by Antonín Brus z Mohelnice in 1573. After a brief period as a freehold property, the estate returned to the Order following the Battle of White Mountain. The vineyard and its structures suffered destruction during the wars over Austrian inheritance in 1742 but were subsequently restored by the Křižovníci.

Architecturally, Špitálka underwent significant transformation towards the end of the 18th century when it transitioned from a vineyard to a residential building. The current structure features a mansard roof and an undercroft, with additional agricultural buildings attached on its eastern side. This architectural evolution reflects both functional changes over time and stylistic influences prevalent during that era.

Today, Špitálka stands as a residential building in private ownership, retaining its historical essence while serving modern purposes. Its location within the Dejvice district of Prague offers easy access to public transportation and is surrounded by a mix of residential buildings and green spaces.
