Špitálská 3 Tenement house
Karla Schulze House of Business I is an important Art Nouveau building in the centre of Hradec Králové at Špitálská 3. The building was built between 1904 and 1905 by the manufacturer Karel Schulz according to the design of architect Rudolf the German. For its architectural value, it was included in the list of cultural monuments in 1987.
At the beginning of the twentieth century, the co-owner of the metal-working factory in Kukřiy Karel Schulz decided to build a new house on the inherited parcel no. 182. He bought the adjacent plot no. 193 and the architect Rudolf approached the Germans with a request to create a uniform facade that closes the whole block and reaches three streets. This created a visual link to the twins. At the beginning of the twentieth century, building and architectural art experienced a boom in Czech countries associated with the advent of the Art Nouveau and in Hradec Králové at this time the modern urban arrangement of the city was formed. The construction of both parts of the house was carried out by the Hradec Construction Company Neklasil and Schmidt. The construction itself began in July 1904 and was completed on 23 August 1905 and in September of the same year the approval procedure followed.
Architect Rudolf Němec designed a decorative Art Nouveau construction. Its typical element is a significant bevelled corner, which is elevated above the crown ledge of the arches and balustradoes and ended with stone ligaments. This corner is decorated with pilasters over three floors. They are finished with stucco wreaths with suspended flaps and ribbons. The floor of the house decor belt rustics, while the upper floors carry rich stucco decoration, especially in fields under windows. The facade headed towards Špital Street is completed by a triangular tympanone extending beyond the neighbouring house. It is supplemented by shallow balconies with forged railing on the first and second floors. Both separate parts of the house have separate entrances, decorated with Art Nouveau stucco plant ornament.
The object owner was Karel Schulz. There were shops on the ground floor of the house, while apartments were set up on the floors. There was one two-bedroom and one three-bedroom apartment on each floor. The layout of these dwellings corresponded rather to the 19th century lifestyle, which was reflected in small bathrooms and the absence of a maid's room.
The interesting thing about building management is that although both parts of the double house are optically one whole, they were each subject to different legal standards. The first part of the house was exempt for 12 years, while the second part for 18 years. The house attracted the attention of the professional public immediately after its completion. It was presented in the prestigious architectural magazine Der Architect, where the authors depicted the facade and interesting superstructure above the crown ledge.
Today, this monument is part of the town building in Hradec Králové. Thanks to its preserved Art Nouveau appearance, it resembles a period of development of modern architecture in the early twentieth century. A tour of the exteriors of this tenement house offers a valuable view of the building development of the city and is worth paying attention to all interested in historical architecture.

Welcome to your walk in Hradec Králové. Right now, you're standing right in front of the remarkable historical structure that you have at your fingertips. Raise your head and look around you. In front of you is an important house named Karl Schulz. This object, together with the building next to it, forms a visually unified unit that perfectly closes the entire building block. At first sight you will be interested in the distinctive character of this whole building, which forms an unmistakable face of the street with its clean lines and overall composition.
Now let's look deeper into the past and remember how this gem actually came into being. The year was nineteen hundred and four, namely the month of July, when the construction work started on both parts of this magnificent house. The whole plan was realized by the wealthy manufacturer Karel Schulz, who printed his vision with this deed at the time. The design of the whole building was created by a gifted architect Rudolf Němec. The construction work progressed very quickly and efficiently, as evidenced by the fact that the construction was successfully completed on the 26th August of nineteenth century. Shortly afterwards, during September of the same year, an official housewarming decision was made, which made the house fully ready to serve its purpose.
Now pay attention to the architecture itself and the details you see before you. The construction was carried out by a well-known hradec construction company consisting of a pair of Nekvasil and Schmidt. Take a look at the front of the house and see the thoughtful work with space. The interesting thing is that this whole building was built on the basis of two separate plots. There was also a strict demand for a unified facade, which the creators managed to solve with admirable elegance. The visually uniform whole of both parts of the house thus looks very harmonious and compact.
Behind this house are concrete human fates and great names. The manufacturer Karel Schulz was a man of action who had a clear idea of what modern urban development should look like. The connection of his financial possibilities with Rudolf's architectural talent to the Germans brought the city Hradec Králové a work of lasting value. The architect German has been perfectly able to link the requirements of the builder to the then building trends and create an object that attracts the attention of bystanders for generations.
Other milestones in its history testify to the great value of this place. For decades, people perceived the beauty of the house until they finally got official recognition. In nineteen hundred eighty-seven, the object was entered in the list of cultural monuments. With this entry, the building has earned the protection it deserves and has become an official part of our national heritage, which must be protected for future generations.
At the end of our stop today, I'd like to invite you to explore the area again. When you go on another trip through town, try to look around you with your eyes open and notice the little details of the historic buildings. Thank you for your attention, I believe you enjoyed this stop, and I look forward to seeing you at the next sights of our beautiful city.
Tips for visitors

You can use your own car or public transport to get to the site, and you can easily verify the current connection in the online connection search engine. Take the camera or smart phone with you to capture detailed architectural features and comfortable shoes to walk through the city centre. The best light for shooting the exterior of the building is in the morning, when the sun falls directly on the street front. Since there are no other specific places to visit in the vicinity of the monument, we recommend to explore the wider historical centre of Hradec Králové. Seasonal recommendations
In the spring the surrounding area wakes up and the city offers fresh air and fine sun rays that highlight the details of the historical building beautifully. Nature begins to bloom around, which gives the place a pleasant and optimistic touch. We recommend wearing layered clothing because the wounds can still be cold while the afternoon is getting warmer. The ideal time for visiting is in the morning when the crowds are still small and the light is very clean.
The summer season brings an intense sun to the historic center and long days of life. The atmosphere is alive, but due to high temperatures, it can be hot in narrow alleys. For the best experience we recommend to come right after opening to avoid the biggest rush of people and heat. Dress light and don't forget to drink. The shadow in these times is the most appreciated.
Autumn in Hradec Kralove is magical thanks to golden leaves and morning fog, which create a mysterious atmosphere around the monument. The light is softer in this period, and the colors work deeply. It is advisable to carry a windbreaker or warmer coat, because the air is getting wet and colder. The best is to visit the place in the afternoon when the sun shines low and the colors are the most beautiful.
In winter it is quieter and the air is frosty, which can be supplemented by snow. The atmosphere is quiet and thanks to the general holiday lighting in the surrounding area it is very cozy. Due to lower temperatures it is necessary to wear very warm clothes, including hat and gloves. We recommend planning a visit around noon hours to make as much light as possible, and always check in advance for shorter opening times.
