The Old Town Hall in Sobotec is a classic building in the southern part of the town square. It was created by rebuilding a noble castle from the late 16th century. The building is protected by a monument and forms a significant dominant feature of the urban monument zone. Over the centuries he served as a town hall, theatre, library and archive.

The original council house stood in Sobotec probably in the middle of the square; the first written mention of it dates back to 1587. However, this building was destroyed, probably during the 30-year war or during the great fire of the city in 1712. The present building grew up in the place of a noble castle built around 1570 on two merged plots. In the 17th century he belonged to Jan Vilí Uranos of Lazín. The crucial milestone for future use of the building was the decision of the nobleman Hřman Jakub Černín of Chudenice, who donated the house to the city for the establishment of a new town hall.

The architectural development of the building affected many modifications. From 1687 to 1689, the builder Giovanni Maderna modified the house. After the big city fire in 1746, which damaged the building, the builder F. A. Pokorný did the repair. Between 1808 and 1847, the town hall acquired the current empirical form. At that time, a prismatic tower was erected in the facade, ending with an onion canopy. On the ground floor there is an arch with four valences encapsulated by arcades. The facade is decorated with window ledge and transparent clock; the second dial is located directly on the tower.

In the past, a salt house was added to the yard, which underwent reconstruction in 1778 and 1808. In 1850 it was adapted to the urban theatre, which created one of the oldest special purpose theatre halls in the Czech countryside. An important cultural event became the decoration of this hall according to the design of the painter Josef Mánes in 1861. New clock clock hours of Jan Prokeš were installed on the tower of the town hall in 1865.

The fate of the building changed according to the needs of the city. At the beginning of the 20th century, the theatre hall was adapted for the cinema's needs and the original Mánes decoration had disappeared. In 1928, after the abolition of the District Authority, the City Office moved to the District House. The old town hall subsequently served as a municipal library, archive and later there were flats in its premises.

Today, the Old Town Hall in Sobotec in Jičinsko is a valuable piece of evidence of the historical development and construction of the city. Visitors can admire its Classicist architecture and recall a rich history ranging from a noble residence to a centre of urban culture. The building is accessible as part of the tour of the historical core of Sobotka and represents the necessary goal for everyone interested in the history of Czech architecture and regional administration.

Welcome to Sobfather. You are standing in front of one of the most important and beautiful building units in this city. This old town hall, which stands on the south side of the square, will immediately attract you with its balanced form and historical force. While you're looking around, try to remember that this object is not just a wall and a roof, but a living witness to the centuries of urban life that took place here. This building is not just part of the square, she is his soul, the point where history meets the present.

To understand why this building looks the way you see it right now, we need to go back deep into the past. The whole story of this place began not as a town hall, but as a seat of noble nobility. In 1570 the original aristocratic castle was probably built here. Imagine the atmosphere at that time when this building stood on two adjacent plots, which were later connected to one whole. It was not a public decision-making area at the time, but a private residence that ruled the area. But history has not always been about peace and stability. In 1746 the city was hit by a great tragedy - a devastating city fire that damaged the town hall building and required major repairs. It was these events, these moments of obstruction and renewal that shaped her face today and led to the original castle becoming the building that you admire today.

Now pay attention to the appearance of the building itself, which is so characteristic. What you see is the result of rebuilding into a classical style. Look at these lobes. Notice the four arcades that create rhythm and offer shelter from the sun or rain. These arches are not just a building element, they are the gates between the public space of the square and the inner life of the town hall. Now look up. The whole building is dominated by a prismatic tower, which is decorated with a very specific onion roof. This element gives the building its unmistakable character and makes it visible from a long distance as a symbol of the city. The whole building is balanced and dignified, which is typical of this style of architecture. This form is the work of important experts such as Giovanni Maderna or F. A. Pokorný who helped this building to gain its majestic appearance today.

This object has never served just one thing. Over the centuries, his role has constantly changed, just as the city of Sobotka had. The building was constantly moving. She served as a town hall where important things were decided for townspeople, but also as a library full of knowledge or as an archive that kept the memory of the place. But a very interesting and fundamental turn occurred in the middle of the nineteenth century. In 1850 a salt house was added to the town hall, which was a former useful building building building, adapted to the city theatre. This step has made the town hall a cultural center. The place where official business was handled became a place where the voices of actors and clapping were heard. This cultural expansion reached its peak in 1861, when the famous painter Josef Mánes proposed the decoration of the theatre hall. Imagine the beauty and artistic value he brought into the interior of this space.

There are also names in the history of this place that you should remember. Names such as Jan Vilím Uranoš z Lazína or Heřman Jakub Černín z Chudenic remind us how this building and this city were closely linked to powerful families and significant personalities. Even the name of John Prokeš is important in this context. All these names make up the fabric from which this history is woven.

If you're wondering what's most fascinating about this place, it's the constant transformation. Imagine the ability of the building to adapt to the needs of the people - from the aristocratic residence to the salt shop to the theatre culture and city administration in the town hall. The building feels like she's breathing with the city.

I hope this brief insight into the past inspired you to explore again. The Old Town Hall in Sobfather is just one of many fascinating stories you can find here. Continue to walk around the square, perceive the atmosphere of this place and let yourself drift by the beauty of Sobotka. Thank you for your time and we wish you a pleasant further discovery of this beautiful city.

Tips for visitors

We recommend a visit in the morning during the working week when the square is quieter and light better depicts the classical details of the facade and the arch.

You can easily reach Sobotka by car and public transport.
