The old water plant in Znojmo is a former resort of the city water plant situated in the valley of the river Dyje under Znojemský Castle. This object was created in the first half of the 20th century. Today it is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic and serves as a leisure centre on the border of the National Park Podyjí.

The city of Znojmo used a water plant to supply water between 1877 and 1969. The area grew gradually and the individual buildings underwent repeated reconstruction. The oldest part of the complex is a hydropower plant with a former mill where a steam pump was originally located. There is still a chimney in the vicinity of the building, which belonged to the operation of the pump.

The architectural development continued between 1905 and 1906 with the construction of buildings which today serve as a water centre. In these areas, sewage tanks, filters and diesel pump have been installed in the past. Another significant expansion took place in 1933 by construction of a new service station and in 1937 the building of the workshops was added. A family villa was built on the opposite side of U Giant Head in the same year.

After the completion of the operation in 1969, the buildings were used by the state company Pobody Moravia as warehouses and workshops. From 2009 to 2010, the entire area was adapted to the leisure centre. Currently there is a museum of historical vehicles in the premises of the former mill, the water shipyard TJ Znojmo in the building of the gas station from 1933 and a restaurant in the building of the former workshops.

The Old Waterworks is an important point for recreation and sports activities. It serves as a base for Znojemsk Scouts and is the starting point for the Dyje River crossing under the Znojemská dam. Due to its location near the forest parks, the Karolína orchard and the Gránické Valley create a popular relaxation zone for residents and visitors of the city.

The preservation of this technical area allows you to see the history of 20th century urban infrastructure in the authentic environment of the Dyje valley. The visit to the Old Waterworks offers the opportunity to know the transformation of industrial heritage into a modern space for leisure and sports.

Welcome to Znojmo. You're standing in a place where the untamed force of nature meets with the efforts of human hands. Before we take a tour, let yourself stand for a moment and soak up the atmosphere of this valley. Look around you. You see the Dyji River, which has been the main pillar of life in this region for centuries. Above you, as the eternal guardian of this entire region, stands the castle of the nojemite. His shadows fall directly on this compound and give him a sense of dignity and unwavering. You are in a place where the city ends and the wilderness of the National Park of Podyjí begins. It's a space where the history of the city directly touches wild and unaltered nature. In front of you is the site of the old waterworks, a place that has been the ultimate foundation for the lives of every Znojmo.

Let us now return together in time and understand why this place is so special. Imagine the city of Znojmo when people were just beginning to learn how to control their water. This whole history, which you are now circumventing, began in 1877. This was the year that the first time this water plant started regularly supplying the city with drinking water. Imagine the joy and relief of people who no longer had to carry water from other sources, but who began to flow directly into their homes thanks to this place. This virtuous function, when the waterworks became the heart of the urban system, lasted incredibly long - until 1969. For over 90 years, this waterworks has been a tireless engine that has kept the city alive, that has grown and that has changed.

Now pay attention to the buildings that surround you. Although at first sight they may seem like a whole, you will find that every part of this area has its own age and its own reason for standing here. If you look at the main buildings that are now the water center, remember that their foundations and walls were created at the turn of 1905 and 1906. It was a period of great expansion when technology began to evolve rapidly. These buildings have been built in order to serve decades and their strength and shape still prove it to you today.

But history didn't stop. The city of Znojmo grew, people multiplied and the need for water was growing. That's why in 1933 the entire object had to expand. At that time a new petrol station was built to cope with the demanding demands of the modern city. You can imagine the work, the technical skill and the effort that people were putting into every new machine and every new part of the building at that time. And if your eyes go to other parts of the complex, you'll find workshops that were built in 1937. Each of these stages of construction, every year you see here, is like a layer in a book that tells the story of how humanity tried to control the elements of nature for its own welfare.

Feel the atmosphere of industrial history that mingles here with the calm of the river. Even if you no longer hear the rumbling of giant machines here today, their presence in every detail of architecture is still felt.

Now I want to take you to one of the most interesting parts of this place. If you go towards the water, you'll encounter the oldest part of this complex. It's a hydroelectric power plant that has served as a mill in the past. It's a fascinating place where the power of flowing water and human effort to produce energy has joined together. Right here, in the heart of this mill, a steam pump was originally placed. Imagine the technical miracle of that time. Steam, piston movement, water noise, and the constant rhythm of the machine, which, thanks to its strength, was able to move the water further and further. It was a place where mechanical force met the relentless power of the Dyje River. This combination was the key to the success of the entire system.

Maybe now you can think of what happened to this place when the water station stopped fulfilling its original function. The area didn't turn into an abandoned ruin, but it found a new direction. Today, this place is alive in a completely different way. There is now a museum of historical vehicles in the premises, a place that can take you to other times through the history of transport and machinery. You can see here the machines that once drove the city and the surrounding area, and which are now resting in these historic spaces.

And what's more, the resort has also become a center for lovers of water and movement. The boatyard of Vodak, which is based here, uses the proximity of the river to enable people to sport and enjoy the beauty of Dyje. This is how history, once used to survive and supply, merged with modern life, entertainment and sport. It's a beautiful transition from heavy industrial work to leisure and culture.

In your next passage, try to perceive these contradictions. Feel the change of old and new, feel the connection between solid walls of buildings and flowing, constantly changing water. Feel how this area is intersected into the landscape of the national park and how it creates a unique place under the castle where history is not just looking into the past, but is part of the present.

Remember, your tour of this place is just beginning. Every corner of this complex, every building and every path along the river can offer you a new view of how the Znojmo should have been in times past. Walk peacefully, let the beauty of this valley consume you and enjoy every moment you spend in these historic spaces. Thank you for choosing to visit this memory and pay attention to her story. We wish you a nice walk and a pleasant encounter with the history of Znojmo. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is late spring or early autumn, when the valley of the river Dyje is coloured with lush greenery or autumn leaves. At these times light is softer and ideal for observing technical architecture in contrast to nature.

For photography I recommend using the morning clock when the sun enters the valley and illuminates the façade of the water plant from below. The best pictures can be taken from the roads along the river, where the location of the building will stand out under the castle edge.

Take with you fixed shoes suitable for outdoor movement and binoculars for observing the surrounding nature. Due to the proximity of the water stream and forest areas, I also recommend insect repellent.

In the immediate vicinity, you can use the set of Caroline, the Gradnic Valley or take a long hike through the valley of the river Dyje. These places offer a quiet environment for relaxing in nature.

For families with children the location is suitable as a starting point for exploring the natural beauties of Podyjí. The paths in the valley are pleasant for walking trips and offer plenty of space to move in the greenery outside urban tourism.
