Staré Rudolfinum is a neoclassical building in Hradec Kralove, which represents an important historical monument to the city. Originally, there were four small houses in this place, which the Hussite destroyed in 1423. Subsequently, a large house was built, which underwent several changes in ownership and architectural modifications. In the first half of the 19th century, both buildings were demolished and a new building was created in their place, which served as a diocesan institute for deaf-mute children. Later, there were various schools and institutions.

The original building on the site of Old Rudolfinum was part of the castle complex. These four little houses were demolished by the Hussite in 1423. In their place, there was a big house called the corner against the castle. The building was originally owned by Vokolický of Divišov, who in the 17th century sold it to Václav Zárub of Hustřán for 1,000 kicks of Míšín. In 1618 Bernard Jestřibský from Rýzmburk purchased the building. At the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, the facade was rebuilt and the building was optically connected to the neighbouring house no. 191. The owners changed over time. In 1814, both houses burned down during a major city fire.

In the early 1880s, both houses were purchased by the royal hradec bishopric led by Jan Joseph Hais. The buildings were demolished and in their place was built a diocesan institute for deaf-mute children, which was festively consecrated on 17 April 1881. The building was named Rudolfinum in honor of the marriage of Crown Prince Rudolf. Soon, however, the space stopped satisfying and the Institute was moved to the new Rudolfino in the years 1901- 1902. Subsequently, the Higher Professional School of Women for Economic Professions, Family Schools, Continuing Schools for Apprenticeship Traders, the Institute of Teachers of Home Teachers and the Educational School moved to Old Rudolfino. In short, there was a financial administration.

In 1911, on the first floor, a girl's lyceum began to be established. During World War II, a deaf-mute institution returned to the building because the new Rudolfinum had to be released to German youth. Since 1960, there's been a boarding school. The building was declared a cultural monument in 1987 and its facade was restored in 1992.

The architectural area is a corner two-storey house with a main seven-axis front to Long Street, one-axis corner and two-axis front to Ziegler Street. Originally there was a castle area with four houses. After they were demolished, a large house was built, which had undergone several reconstructions and changes of owners. In the first half of the 19th century, both houses were demolished and a new building was built in neoclassical style, which served as a diocesan institution for deaf-mute children.

Staré Rudolfinum is therefore a monument with a rich history that reflects numerous changes in owners and functions. From Hussite demolition to fire in the 19th century to modern use as a school building, this building represents important chapters of Hradec Králové with its architecture and history.

Today Staré Rudolfinum is under the administration of SPS, SOS and SOU Hradec Králové. Its historical significance and architectural value make it an interesting destination for visitors to the city. By exploring this monument we can enjoy beautiful architecture and learn more about Hradec Kralove's past.

Staré Rudolfinum is therefore not only an important historical object, but also a lively reminder of the past, which is worth visiting. Its history and architecture form a valuable part of the local heritage to be preserved for future generations.

Welcome to the beautiful city of Hradec Králové. Right now, when you listen to this voice, you're facing one of the most important and oldest places in this city. Staré Rudolfinum. Before we go into his stories, try to stop for a while and just feel the atmosphere of this place. Look at the building in front of you. Even though her face has changed over the centuries, you still feel the weight of history and calm that brings her neoclassical style. This building is not just a cluster of walls and stones, it is a living witness to everything this city has been through.

Now let's go back deep into the past together so that we can understand what this place has been through. Imagine 1423. It was a time of great upheaval and unrest. There was no big building at the place where you are now, but four small, simple houses. These houses, however, were not fatal, because the geese were destroyed at the time. It was a period when the whole world was changing, as people knew at the time, and this place was one of the many victims of these changes. But from debris and dust, something new must have been born. A much larger house was built in place of these small houses over time. This new house has become part of the city and has undergone many changes. His looks were changing, his owners were changing, and every new era left its mark.

In 1618, when Europe was once again in tension and approaching major conflicts, the building became the property of Bernard Jestřibský of Rýzmburk. He and the other people who lived here were part of the wider history of this region. But sometimes fate was very cruel. In the first half of the nineteenth century, the city was in danger, which no one expected. In 1814, Hradec Králové was hit by a large city fire. It was a devastating phenomenon that did not abstain from many structures. Even the two houses that stood here at the time destroyed the fire completely. All they left were ashes and memories.

But now pay attention to what you are seeing right now. What your eyes are watching is the result of a huge recovery effort and a fresh start. After a devastating fire, the city decided to build something new, something that would serve people and radiate order and harmony. That's how a neoclassical building was built. This style that you perceive is seeking balance and calm beauty. Even if you can't see every detail in the past, feel the certainty and stability that this architecture brings to this street. It's an architecture that doesn't try to scream, it's about dignity.

This new house has acquired its name, Rudolfinum, in honor of one important marriage. The name this carried inside of it the joy and celebration of a new connection, so it became part of the identity of this building. In 1881 a new diocesan institute was completed, which was housed in this building. It was an institution for children who couldn't hear or speak. Imagine the care and effort that people gave to these children at the time. This building became a place where hope was born and people learned to communicate without words. It was a place with a great sense of humanity.

Later, in 1911, the role of the building changed again. On her first floor, a girl's lyceum began to settle. The building has thus become a centre of education and growth for young women. Each next decade brought new faces, new voices and new needs, but the building remained a fixed point. Even in the difficult times of the last century, this place has maintained its importance. And finally, in 1987, this building was officially declared a cultural monument. This means that its value for all of us is recognised and that we must protect it for future generations.

Now you might wonder if this place is hiding a mystery. Perhaps the secret is no hidden treasure, but the real mystery is the very ability of this place to survive. How is it possible that after a devastating fire, after wars and many changes to the owners, he's still standing there and still watching us? It is the secret of endurance and humanity's ability to rebuild on the ruins. Staré Rudolfinum is a symbol of the fact that even after the greatest destruction something beautiful and lasting can be created.

When you look at her walls and her face, feel the constant change that happened here. Every year, every decade and every single person who came in here added their invisible trail. You're standing in front of a building that's like a book whose pages are written by stone and architecture.

I hope this brief insight into the past has helped you better understand what you are seeing. Staré Rudolfinum is more than just a building; It's the heart of this town's history. Now, please, continue your journey along Hradec Kralove. See more sights, feel the atmosphere of these streets and don't get tired of the beauty of this place. Any next step can lead you to another wonderful story. Thank you for spending this moment with me. I wish you a nice walk and many other experiences. Goodbye.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring - In March and April, a fine spring light spread around Old Rudolfinia, reflected from freshly green leaves and flowering shrubs. During this period visitors are distracted, so the queues are short. We recommend to arrive after ten o'clock when the sun is at a pleasant height, and take a light jacket or sweater, because the wounds can be cold. Enjoy a quiet walk in the garden where the first flowers awaken.

Summer - In the summer months the sun shines high and illuminates the Rudolfinia facade with bright, warm tones, while the surrounding parks are full of green. Due to a higher number of visitors, crowds are formed in the morning, so it is best to arrive early in the morning, preferably around the eighth, or late in the afternoon after six, when the temperature is slightly reduced. Don't forget the headgear, sunglasses and plenty of fluids because heat can be intense.

Autumn - In September and October, the surrounding trees turn into golden, red and brown shades, creating a picturesque atmosphere and a soft, scattered light on the historic wall. Visitors are falling, so you can plan the afternoon tour around 4:00, when the light is most favourable to photography. Dress in layered clothes - sweater under a light jacket - because autumn weather is variable and can be colder.

Winter - In December and January, a fine snow is often borne around Rudolfinia, which highlights architectural details and creates a quiet, almost mystical atmosphere. Hot clothes are essential - fat coat, hats, gloves and tight shoes, because cold and possible frost can make it difficult to walk on outdoor roads. The inner spaces then offer cosy lighting and a chance to relax after the tour.
