Staroměstská vodárenská věž is a historic building in Prague 1 on Novotný plaza. Originally used to supply Old Town with water. Today's neo-gothic form of 53 meters was created in the reconstruction of the late 19th century. The tower is now part of the Museum of Bedřich Smetana.

This place was used to have mills and wooden water tower, which is the first news from the end of the 15th century. It was used for the distribution of Vltava water into Old Town's cashew. At that time, wooden structures were prone to fires, which often caused defrosting of equipment by open fire during the winter months. The building has also been repeatedly damaged by floods in the past.

The base of the building from 1577 is built from sandstone blocks with square ground plan. The tower has five floors and reaches 53 meters. In 1835 it was technically modernized by Franz Josef Gerstner and Josef Božek. In 1878- 1888 a neo-gothic reconstruction took place, during which the tower was increased by one floor and the original Baroque roof tower was replaced by a new ending. The tower is equipped with a clock machine with four digits. The adjacent building of the water plant from 1883 is in a neo-Renaissance style with facades from Antonín Wiehl and the sgraffiti Mikoláš Alš, František Ženíšek and Jan Koula.

The history of the tower has affected several dramatic events. In 1648 it was damaged by the Swedes during the attack on the Charles Bridge, which required reconstruction in 1762. Other damage was caused by revolutionary events in 1848, after which architect Bergmann restored the construction. The last major fire broke out in 1878.

The water placed at a height of 31 metres allowed the water to be distributed by itself into the surroundings. It ceased to be used in 1880 and the whole waterworks finally served in 1913. Thanks to the initiative of the Bedřich Smetana Society, the water plant building, where the pumps were located, was cost-effective. Since 12 May 1936, the Museum of Bedřich Smetana has been located here.

Currently, the building is part of the exhibitions of the Czech Museum of Music, which is managed by the National Museum in Prague. The monuments form an important architectural element of the Old Town and commemorates the technological development of the infrastructure of the period of industrial revolution.

Staroměstská vodárenská věž is a unique witness to Prague's water pipeline and architecture of various periods. Her visit offers insight into the history of the city and musical heritage.

Welcome to the heart of Prague, Old Town. You are standing in front of an ancient water tower, a building that at first glance acts as an integral part of the Gothic panorama of this historic core. Although it may seem to you that you are looking at a medieval fortress or monastery tower, the truth is something else and much more interesting. This monument shows how the city evolved and how technical progress came to be with tradition. Take a look at the low, square body of the tower, which is built from accurately carved sandstone blocks. This material and the way of masonry is designed to give the impression of ancient architecture, although it is a construction from the late nineteenth century. It is a masterfully executed illusion that was used to harmonize modern engineering into the surrounding historical development.

Let's move forward in time and find out why and when this building was created. In 1883 an old-town waterworks was built, and this tower became part of it. The main purpose of the whole area was to supply Old Town with drinking water. At that time, ensuring a clean stream of water for the growing city was a key issue of public health and comfort. The facades of this building were designed by architect Antonín Wiehl, who tried to incorporate the new building into the historical context. But the history of this location goes much deeper than you might think. In 1835 there was technical modernization of the system, which involved important engineers Franz Josef Gerstner and Josef Božek. This means that the principles of water supply worked here and evolved long before the tower took its present form.

Now pay attention to the details you see before you. The tower has a square plan, which is typical of Gothic buildings, but here it serves rather as an aesthetic medium. The key moment in the history of this building was 1888. After several fires and necessary reconstruction, there was extensive neo-gothic reconstruction. That's when the tower was raised by one floor, which gave it today's silhouette. This reconstruction was not only about repairs, but about the overall redesign of the appearance to match the then taste and architectural trends. Notice how smoothly the older parts connect to the newer ones. The sandstone from which the tower is built has a specific texture that eventually gained patina, and thus became even closer to the surrounding historical buildings. Although it may seem today that the tower is just a decorative element, its design has always been functional. It was used to maintain pressure in the pipeline and to supply water, which was extremely important in the era before the expansion of central water systems.

Who was involved in making this building look like we know it today? In addition to the already mentioned Antonín Wiehl, who designed the original facades, other important architects participated in later modifications and reconstruction. Among them were Mikoláš Alš, František Ženíšek and Jan Koula. Each of them brought their specific perspective and expertise to the project. It is fascinating to see how the creators who tried to respect the original character of the building took turns over the years, but also to adapt it to new needs. This collaborating of various architectural directions and the air is what makes this tower a unique monument. It's not just one person, it's the layering of decisions that shaped it today.

The interesting thing that may surprise many visitors is that this tower also has a war history, which is less well known but very important for understanding the history of Prague. In 1648, during the Thirty Years' War, the Swedes attacked the Karlov Bridge. In this conflict, the tower, or rather the building that stood in this place or was connected to it, was damaged. It is important to remember that although today's appearance of the tower comes from the end of the nineteenth century, the site itself has a much richer and often turbulent past. The damage caused by the Swedish army reminds how dangerous life in Prague was in times of war and how often historical buildings had to be repaired and restored. This event is also proof that water supply systems have been strategically important in the past because control of access to water could decide the fate of the city.

Another interesting fact is the conversion of the function of the building. In 1936, the building was renovated, which changed its purpose. The original water plant was converted into Bedřich Smetana Museum. This change shows how the city tried to preserve historic buildings and give them a new, cultural sense. Instead of cutting down old engineering buildings, they were designed to serve as spaces for art and culture. This transformation is typical of Prague, where history and the present intersect constantly. Today's neo-gothic form of the tower, which was created in the reconstruction of the late nineteenth century, today serves as a monument to both ages - the time when the water flowed and the time when the music sounded.

Look up and feel the atmosphere of this place. Even if you can't see inside the tower, its exterior appearance is strong enough to give you an idea of how important it played in the history of Old Town. The sandstone blocks that make up her body are witnessing many changes, fires, reconstruction and war conflicts. Each of them left their tracks at the construction site, whether in the form of repaired clasps or changed details. This tower is not only a stone structure but a living document of the history of Prague. It's a place where the technical skill of engineers meets the artistic sense of architects.

In conclusion, I'd like to tell you that you're standing in front of a monument that has more layers than it looks. It's a story about how the city learned to live with modern technology, how it defended its enemies and how it sought to preserve its identity. I suggest you look at the tower from different angles. A change of perspective may reveal new details that you missed at first glance. Notice how light is reflected from sandstone at different times of the day, how it changes colors and texture of stone. This is also part of the experience of historical monuments.

Thank you for your attention and for taking the time to stop by this important piece of Prague history. I hope that this short guide has helped you better understand what you are seeing right now, and that it will encourage you to explore the area further. Old Town is full of stories waiting to be discovered. I wish you a pleasant stay in Prague and many other inspirational discoveries. The farewell to this place is not over, but it will begin

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is the late afternoon when the sun highlights the details of the brick wall. For photography we recommend using the natural light before sunset, which best captures the atmosphere of this historic building.

It is possible to transport by car and public transport to the memory; We recommend checking the current connections and timetables in the search engine.

We recommend taking with us especially comfortable shoes and a camera. Due to the historical nature of the building, it is advisable to carry basic refreshments and water.

For families with children, the tower represents a great opportunity to talk about how the water supply worked in 1883. We recommend children to show a square ground plan of the construction and explain its original function.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the tower is surrounded by fresh greenery and soft, waking light, which highlights the details of the historical building. The atmosphere is fresh and the city is coming back to life. We recommend wearing layered clothes because the wounds are still cold, while the afternoon can be nice and warm. The best is to come in the morning when the crowds are even smaller than in the season.

The summer season brings intense sunshine and long days that make the view of the tower an unforgettable experience. Due to high temperatures and large number of tourists, it is best to arrive at the beginning of the operating time to avoid the greatest heat and crowds. Dress lightly and don't forget enough fluids.

Autumn moons offer dramatic lighting and golden shades of the surrounding landscape, which perfectly complement historical architecture. The morning mist gives the place a special mystery. For a comfortable visit it is advisable to carry a windbreaker or coat, because it can be unpleasantly cold in the streets. The perfect time to observe the colors is late afternoon.

In winter, the atmosphere is quieter and the views can be supplemented with a snow blanket. Days are short, so plan a visit when there is still plenty of daylight. In Advent time there is a pleasant mood around, but do not forget very warm clothes and tight shoes that will protect you from cold while standing longer.
