The old chateau in Libějovice (Strakonice district) is a Renaissance building created by the reconstruction of an older Gothic fortress from the second half of the 14th century. The building excels with architectural stature and history associated with important noble families such as Rožmberks, Schvamberk and Buquoy.

The founder of the original Gothic fortress is Pešek Malovec z Malovic, which acquired the village around the mid-14th century. According to his fashion, he used on his seal a German adjoining house from Liebenberk, while his descendants referred to themselves as Malovci from Libìjovice. In 1389 Dobš Malovec of Libějovice sold a number of villages, ponds and mills. In the second half of the fifteenth century, Diviš Malovec was based here, who worked in the service of King George of Podebrad and served as the council of the chamber court.

The building has four wings arranged around the trapezoid courtyard. There is a gothic gateway to the inner space with a steep portal and a trap for a drawbridge in the north wing. The outer dominance of the northern facade and the corner bay are the arch Renaissance shields. The Gothic and Renaissance vaults were preserved in the passage and other areas. On the east side of the courtyard there are arcades carried by four-sided columns, while on the first floor of the north wing is preserved a Renaissance rectangular profiled portal.

In the second half of the 16th century, Vilém z Rožmberka had the old fortress rebuilt into Renaissance style. Petr Vok of Rožmberk then referred the chateau to his nephew Jan Zrinsky, who lived here until his death in 1612. After him, Libějovice inherited Jan Jiří ze Švamberka, which joined them to its Třebonian estate. The Švamberks were sentenced to confiscate property as a result of their participation in the state uprising in 1618-1620. In 1623, Count Karel Bonaventura Buquoy won the estate. After the completion of the new chateau in the eighteenth century, the old mansion no longer performed as a main residence, but served as offices and apartments of officials.

In one of the ground floor rooms of the chateau there was a school between 1800 and 1861. In the nineteenth century, the object was sometimes visited by literary people, such as Julius Zeyer. In the second half of the twentieth century, the housing building was managed by the Libejovice local national committee.

Today the old chateau is protected as a cultural monument and is part of the landscape monument zone Libějovicko - Lomecko. The building was repaired in 2017. This object represents a valuable architectural transition between the Gothic fortress and the Renaissance residence. Visit of the monument offers insight into the history of noble families and building development of the region.

Welcome to the Old Chateau in Libìjovice. You just stopped in front of one of the most important witnesses to the history of this region. You're standing right in front of a building that carries traces of many different epoch patterns that have been taking turns here over the centuries. At first glance, you may not see the immediate nobility you would expect from the royal palace, but that is what its true strength and fascinating character is all about. It is a place that has constantly changed its face to meet the needs of its owners, from a persistent medieval fortress to a representative Renaissance mansion and finally a practical administrative building. Feel the atmosphere of the place that has survived for centuries, and imagine all the people who have been here have made decisions and lived.

Now let's go back deep into the past together to understand why this building looks like what you're seeing right now. The whole history of this place begins much before the word lock becomes common. In the original, there was a Gothic fortress, firm and firm, which was intended primarily to defend and protect the surrounding estate. The first major historical milestones appeared here in 1389, when Dobíš Malovec sold a number of villages and ponds which formed the basis of today's Libejovice estate. At that time power was determined by land ownership and the ability to defend these lands.

The break in the history of this place occurred in the mid-16th century. In 1559 Divish Malovec handed over the estate to a nobleman, Wilhelm of Rožmberk. This decision started a process that completely changed the character of the whole building. The Renaissance chateau was born in the second half of the 16th century thanks to extensive reconstruction, instead of a steep and dark medieval fortress. Here there was a need for security with a new need for representation and comfort. The building has stopped being just a fortified point in the landscape and has become a home for the important lineage that have been here for many years.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself that you are currently observing. If you look around and begin to perceive the overall structure of the building that surrounds you, you will notice its specific layout. The chateau is not made up of one massive block, but consists of four wings. These wings are arranged around each other to create an inner space, a courtyard that has a very unusual, trapezoidal shape. This shape is not random, it is the result of an effort to create a harmonious whole which at the same time had to respect the original, older Gothic base. Even though you look at the Renaissance face of this mansion today, underneath the surface you still feel the old medieval essence that was the basis for everything that followed. Feel the geometry of space as the wings intertwine and create this unique space.

The history of this place is extremely rich and connected with names that in Czech history sound like symbols of power and influence. After the reconstruction there were important nobles whose names have been registered permanently in history. After the Rožmberks came to the game Švamberková and then the House of Buquoys. Each of these families brought their own trail, their own ways of seeing the world and their own needs. In 1612 one of the major events took place here, when Jan Zrinský died, a man who lived in these walls at the time and who saw the chateau as his home. Subsequently, in 1623, there was another fundamental change when the entire Libějovice estate was taken over by Count Karel Bonaventura Buquoy. The House of Buquoys has become an inherent part of this place and their influence here has been felt for many generations.

The interesting thing that may interest you is the way this building's fate has changed dramatically over the centuries. In the eighteenth century, something happened that might not have occurred to the nobles back then. A new, more modern chateau was built, which became the home of the family. So what happened to the old lock? He wasn't demolished, but he found a whole new, more practical role. He stopped serving as a luxury residence for the highest nobility and became an administrative center. The ceremonial feasts ceased to be held in his premises, and instead there were offices and officials. This transformation from a magnificent palace to an official residence is a fascinating example of how history adapts to the needs of the present and how even the largest buildings must be changed in order to continue to exist.

When you look at a building, you can imagine the different layers of time that are connected here. Beneath the Renaissance shapes lies a Gothic fortress, over which in the eighteenth century was the shadow of administrative work. Every part of this chateau, every wing, has its own storyline. It's like a book that has many chapters, but they're all written on the same page of history.

Now that you have a better idea of what you see and what has happened here over the centuries, I suggest you continue your next tour. Feel the contrast between the noble history of noble generations and the daily life of officials who later worked here. Every detail you see is part of this big story. I wish you a pleasant encounter with the history of Libějovice and enjoy the next moments spent in this fascinating place.
