Synagoga v Děčíně-Podmoklech is an Art Nouveau sacral building from 1907. It is located in the children's district of Podmokla at the foot of the Shepherd's Wall. It is the only preserved synagogue of its type in the north of the country, which, after a period of decline and neglect, is undergoing gradual renewal.

Construction plans were made at the end of the 19th century. The implementation was made possible by a collection to which the children's benefactors and entrepreneurs contributed. The building was built in 1907 in Žižkov Street on the site of the former sports hall. In the same year, it was ordained by Rabbi Max Freund.

The construction is carried out in an oriental Art Nouveau style. The interior of the large assembly hall on the first floor contains an artistically processed box on the torus (aron ha- codesh), located at the east wall. A significant element is the lead crystal chandelier from Kamenický Shenov. In the original interior there were eleven benches in two rows with a capacity for 110 men. The women had reserved seats in the gallery where the spiral staircase led. On the second floor there was an apartment of Shamese and under the whole building is built a cellar.

Since its inception in 1907, the Jewish community owned the building. In 1941, it was taken by the Nazis. After World War II, it was no longer used for its original purposes and since 1966 the archive has been located in it, leading to its gradual deterioration. The property was returned to the Jewish village in 1996.

In 1939, the mayor of dr. Kreissler prevented the destruction of the building. During the Nazi occupation, the synagogue was used for military purposes; for example, the occupants drew a map of England on her floor. The original Children's Tóra disappeared at the beginning of World War II, the present was donated by Ostrava's Jewish community in 2005.

The reconstruction of the monument began in 1996 under the leadership of Vladimir Posko, who continued to reestablish the local Jewish village from 1993 under the Presidency of Wilhelm Markovič. The first priority was urgent repair of the roof and subsequent renovation of the interior according to preserved historical photographs. Between 1995 and 2014 1 600 000 CZK was drawn for repairs under the Architectural Heritage Programme. Today the gallery serves for art exhibitions and cellars to meet members of the Jewish village and their guests.

Synagoga v Děčíně-Podmoklech presents unique architectural evidence of Jewish presence in the region. Her visit allows you to see the history of the local community and appreciate the beauty of Art Nouveau architecture.

Welcome to Decin, specifically in Podmokla. Stop for a moment, take a breath and feel the atmosphere of this place. You're standing in front of a building that carries layers of history, hope and deep sadness. In front of you is the synagogue in Děčín-Underwater, a unique building that protruding through its silhouette on the slope of the Shepherd's Wall. Look at its shapes and see how this architecture is inserted into the surrounding terrain. It's a place that survived a period where many similar monuments seemed to be erased from the map of our cities forever.

Let us now go back in time more than a hundred years. The year is nine hundred and seven. It was this year that this synagogue was completed and consecrated. The ceremony was led by Rabbi Max Freund, who at that time represented the spiritual needs of the local Jewish community. At that time, Podmokla was a living place where different cultures and beliefs intertwined, and this building was a proud symbol of the identity and stability of local Jewish families. Imagine the enthusiasm and joy that must have existed in the streets when the doors of this house of prayer first opened for their believers.

Now pay attention to the very form of the building. If you look at the facade and the overall design, you will notice that it is not a rough temple. The construction is carried out in an oriental Art Nouveau style. The Art Nouveau was at the peak of modernity at that time, seeking inspiration in nature and smooth lines, while oriental elements supply synagogue with an exotic and noble touch. It's a very rare connection that makes the building a real jewel. Notice how gently these two worlds complement each other. It is fascinating to realize that this is the only preserved synagogue of its type in the entire north of our country. This makes it not only a local monument, but an object of national importance.

If you have a chance to look inside or just imagine a building, remind yourself of one particular detail, which is really unique. Inside is a chandelier made of lead crystal from Kamenický Shenov. This detail combines religious construction with local craft art and the tradition of glassmaking from nearby surroundings. It's a small piece of luxury that resembles the prosperity and taste of the people who built this synagogue.

But the history of this place is full of dramatic twists. Let's move on to the darkest years of the twentieth century, the Second World War. During this period, the Nazi synagogue was occupied. Many religious structures were deliberately destroyed or levelled at the time, but this synagogue remained a state. And that's thanks to the incredible effort and courage of the mayor at the time, Dr. Kreissler. It was his fault the building wasn't demolished. The Nazis have used it, but they have done so in a way that is now completely absurd and freezing from the point of view of history.

Imagine that in the space that was intended for prayer and spiritual search, suddenly there were soldiers with maps. The synagogue was used for military purposes, specifically to map England. As part of their strategic plans, the Nazis drew a map of England on the floor of the synagogue to plan their attacks. It is a deeply paradoxical image: a holy place transformed into an operational staff for planning war and destruction. This experience left an invisible but heavy print in the building.

After the war, the synagogue did not begin to serve its original purpose again. Years of silence and abuse followed. The building gradually suffered from time and neglect, but its foundation and spirit were preserved. The break came in the 1990s. In the year one thousand nine hundred ninety-five, a major reconstruction began under the Architectural Heritage Rescue Programme. It was a period of intensive work when experts tried to return to the construction of its formal globe. A year later, in the year one thousand nine hundred ninety-six, the synagogue officially became the property of the Jewish community again.

People who believed in its value played a key role in this rebirth process. Names such as Vilém Markovič or Vladimír Poskočil are closely linked to the fate of this synagogue. Thanks to their activities and efforts, this building is today not just an empty box, but a living testament to the history of the region.

If you look at the building again, try to see more in it than just the walls and the roof. You see in it the courage of Dr. Kreissler, who stood up against the stream of hate. You see in it the precision of the stone glassmakers who created the crystal chandelier. You see the shadow of Nazi officers drawing maps of a foreign land on the floor while ignoring the sanctity of the place they were in.

This synagogue is like a book whose pages are written by stone and glass. It is a place that teaches us that even in the darkest times there is hope and that through the efforts of a few brave individuals, something that should have been forgotten can survive. It's fascinating that this building still stands on the slope of the Shepherd Wall and reminds us of who we are and where we come from.

Now I leave you to look at the facade details in peace and perceive the silence that exists here. I recommend walking slowly around the building and watching from different angles how oriental Art Nouveau elements change with the falling light. If you have time, think about how many stories are hidden in these walls and how many generations of people have come here in hope and silence.

Thank you for accompanying me on this short journey through the history of the synagogue in Decin. I hope you are interested in this place and that you are leaving with a new look at the wealth of our northern regions. I wish you a pleasant continuation in discovering the beauty and mystery of the Decin. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is in the morning or late afternoon, when natural light best highlights the Art Nouveau details of the facade. Thanks to the position on the slope of the Shepherd's Wall, the best atmosphere for the observation of architecture is here in these hours.

You can reach the monument by car and public transport. The current connection and parking options in Podmokla section are recommended to check in the current search engine or transport portal to make the path as smooth as possible.

We recommend to bring comfortable shoes because the synagogue is located in the slope terrain. It may be useful for people interested in history to have prepared additional information about the Jewish community in the region.

For the best photos, focus your lens on the architectural elements from 1907. The ideal light for capturing a building is when the sun shines directly on the main facade, which underlines its unique style.

For families with children, a visit is an appropriate opportunity to talk about history and architecture. Due to the location on the slope we recommend combining a visit with a short walk in the surrounding area, which is suitable for all ages.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the synagogue's surroundings flourish and awaken to life, giving the place a fresh atmosphere. The soft spring light will highlight the facade details beautifully. I recommend wearing a layer of clothing because the weather is variable, and planning a visit in the morning when the air is the cleanest.

The summer season brings sharp sun and intense colors that highlight the architecture of the building. Expect more visitors in the main season, so it is best to come first thing in the morning to avoid the biggest crowds and heat. Choose light, breathable clothes and don't forget the sun protection.

Autumn in Podmoklech is characterized by golden leaves and frequent fog, which give the monument a mysterious and nostalgic touch. The walk to the synagogue is very quiet at this time. Due to the humid weather, I recommend waterproof shoes and a visit in late afternoon, when the light is softest.

In winter, the synagogue acts in silence and calm, possibly under a layer of snow, creating a contrast and humble atmosphere. Days are short, so I recommend you follow the shortened opening times and come earlier. Don't forget the warm sweater and gloves, so the cold doesn't prevent you from exploring space.
