Lížák is one of the few preserved Gothic tvrzi in the Czech Republic. Located in the heart of the village of Zaječice in the district of Chrudim. The rest of the one-story building was preserved from the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. Its interest lies in a preserved Gothic portal with profiled arches and gothic vaults in the interior which show its original military-administrative function.

Since 1958 this monument has been protected as a cultural heritage.

The fortress was built as part of the economic court and served as an administrative and defence centre for the surrounding villages. Its architectural feature is a single-storey house with an opal wall and brick accessories. A gothic portal with cross bars and a square window with double sides was preserved. In the interior, the oven and rooms with cross vaults were preserved, typical of late Gothic tvrz.

At present tvrz is part of private property and inhabited. Preserved residues tvrze forms the southwest part of the economic court, where other historical buildings are located.

The fortress is known mainly because of the only preserved Gothic vault with profiled isling in Bohemia. It's an interesting example of medieval architecture and an administrative structure worth visiting. Although privately owned, there was a significant Gothic portal and vaults that reflected its original function. The surroundings of the village are naturally beautiful, but without other significant historical monuments up to five kilometres away.

The preservation of tvrze in Zaječice reminds of the importance of medieval construction and administrative structure in Bohemia. It is a rare example of military architecture that was important for the protection and management of the estate.

Welcome to the village of Zajechice. Right now, thanks to your headphones, we can go on a journey of time together. You're standing right in front of one of those rare buildings that doesn't seem like just another ordinary house in our country, but as a silent witness to ancient events. Before your eyes, this historic tvrz stands, which humbly bowed into the landscape at the left bank of the Lížák stream. Feel the atmosphere of peace that exists here. You may find this building modest at first sight, because it is only one-storey, but it is in its modesty and how faithfully it has preserved its original form, its true beauty and its historical value. Look at her walls and try to perceive the texture, the matter that's been standing here for hundreds of years.

Let us now move further into the past together and understand why this building was created. Imagine a period at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. This was the time when landscape management methods were formed in Czech countries and the needs for safety and proper management were very high. This tvrz was not created as an isolated object, but was a solid part of the wider economic court. At that time, around 1400 to 1450, this area was undergoing significant changes and this building was built or essentially rebuilt as a centre for the surrounding territory. It wasn't just an ordinary housing building, but it served as a military-administrative center. There should have been people here who oversaw order, property management, and that everything in this area should work the way it should. It is fascinating to think how many decisions and how many human destinies have been dealt with in these areas in the past.

Now pay close attention to what you see right in front of you, and see if you can see the details of the building that shows its excellent medieval origin. Notice the material from which the house is taken. See the light, soft structure of the stone? This is opaka, material that is very typical of this area and which gives the building its specific appearance. In this stone matter, red brick supplements are then inserted, creating an interesting visual contrast between the bright stone and the darker brick color. Even though the building is only on the ground floor, its architecture is very rich. If you had the chance to look inside, your eyes would immediately capture the most important. The main treasure is the Gothic portal. Notice its lining, which is profiled. This means that it is not just a simple hole in the wall, but it has a complex, rhythmic shape with lines drawn up to create a game of light and shadow. This detail was at the time a sign of the high art and technical fitness of builders. And in the interior, there are gothic arches, specifically the cross arches, which are typical of late Gothic. These arches are not just decoration, but they are structural elements that hold the whole structure and give it the right feeling of strength and grandeur.

When you look at these stone shapes, you might wonder who built all these walls. Who were those people who at that time held a knife and owed it to create such precise shapes from the optics? Who were the trustees who came here every day and made decisions about things important to the entire estate? Unfortunately, the plot did not take away the names of the particular architects or the names of the nobles or officials who once lived here. But they are anonymous heroes of history. It is the unknown that gives this place some mystery. But we can imagine the craftsmen who worked here and the people who lived here and who made this place alive with their presence. Although their names have been forgotten, their work here is still alive and tangible in every profiled stone.

Now I want to tell you one thing that might really interest you and give this place even more weight. This tvrz is not just an ordinary old house in the village. It is one of the very few preserved Gothic tvrzi that we have managed to preserve throughout the Czech Republic. Most similar buildings from that time either completely disappeared or were so fundamentally rebuilt in later centuries that their original medieval character was irreparably lost. But here we managed to preserve this authentic face. It's like a little piece of true history that's left at our disposal. That is why this tvrz was included in the list of protected cultural heritage of the Czech Republic in 1958. It is a recognition of its uniqueness and proof that even such a modest building can be of great value to our entire country.

Now that you know a little bit more about this construction and when you realize its significance, I suggest you just walk around in peace and see how history blends beautifully with the present. This tvrz is now privately owned and serves as a dwelling, which is interesting in itself - people still live here in the body of a building that was built for completely different purposes hundreds of years ago. Feel the connection between the past and the present. Thank you for spending this moment with this monument and for trying to look into her secrets with us. We wish you a beautiful and inspirational next trip through the countryside and enjoy all the beauty the Zajechic surroundings offer. Goodbye.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, tvrz wakes up with nature. The trees are growing around the walls and the air smells fresh. The light is delicate and pleasant in this period to capture beautiful shots. We recommend you take several layers of clothing because the wounds may still be cold while the afternoon will be warm. Visit the place in the morning when there is still peace.

The summer months bring strong sun and heat, which accompanies dense green greenery. The atmosphere is alive, but because of the high temperatures, it can be hard at the walls. It's best to arrive right after opening to avoid the biggest groups of people and heat. Don't forget the headgear and enough fluids to drink.

Autumn offers an unmistakable mood thanks to colorful leaves and morning fog surrounding the walls. The golden light of the autumn sun gives the building a special look. It is advisable to carry a waterproof jacket and firmer shoes because the road around tvrze can be slippery or wet. The perfect time to visit is clear afternoon hours.
