zámek Javorná Chateau

Zámek Javorná is a Baroque chateau situated northwest of the village of Javorná near Bochov in the Karlovy Vary District. Built between 1729 and 1730 by Questenberg for hunting, it later served as an administrative center after the local parish church was demolished. The chateau features a single-wing design with an economic wing and a chapel dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk. Despite its historical significance, the structure is in poor condition, with parts of the economic wing having been unsympathetically rebuilt.

The origins of Javorná date back to at least 1366 when it was first mentioned as part of the Rýzmburks' domain under Luitold von Javorná's ownership. Over the centuries, the estate changed hands multiple times, reflecting Bohemia's turbulent history during this period. In the early 15th century, it became associated with the Zajíc family of Hazmburk and was integrated into the Andělská Hora domain. From 1412 to 1567, the Plavna family held ownership before passing it on to the Lobkovic family until the late 16th century. The Colon family acquired Javorná in the late 1500s but lost it due to their involvement in a rebellion. In 1623, Albrecht von Wallenstein sold it to Questenberg, who built the current chateau between 1729 and 1730.

Architecturally, Zámek Javorná was originally designed as a hunting lodge during a period of Baroque cultural and architectural development under Habsburg rule in Bohemia. The design includes a single wing with an economic section and a chapel dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk. Over time, parts of the economic wing were unsympathetically rebuilt, contributing to its current poor condition.

Ownership of Javorná has seen dramatic changes throughout history. After Questenberg built the chateau, it was acquired by Kounic in 1752 and later by Beaufort-Spontini in 1831. In 1929, the Staroboleslavská Collegiate Chapter purchased the estate, maintaining ownership until its nationalization by Czechoslovakia in 1948. After World War II, it was used by a state farm before being returned to its original owner in 2010.
