Zámek Klecany Chateau

Zámek Klecany, located in Central Bohemia in the village of Klecany, district of Praha-východ, is a historical monument with roots dating back to the Middle Ages. Originally built on the site of the former fortress, the chateau underwent a number of architectural transformations and transitions of the owners. Its history is closely linked to political changes in the Czech Republic during the Middle Ages and early New Testament, which makes it not only a memory of architecture, but also a witness of important historical events.

Originally as a fortress created in the Middle Ages, Zámek Klecany was built in a place known since 1309. The first mention of the fort dates back to 1380 and various owners took turns over the following decades. In 1332, Bohuslav Olbramovice bought the Klecan farm with the church from Prague, which was the first major transfer of ownership rights. After that, the fortress became the property of the Olbramovice family until the late 1980s. In 1418 it was owned by Mikuláš Meixner of Yevíček, who opposed the Hussites and then fled, which led to Klecany falling to the Old Town of Prague. In 1435 Jan of Kunvald, known as Silver Star, bought them from the village.

Architecturally, the chateau evolved from the original fortress to the Baroque chateau with a later classical addition. Originally, it had a two-storey main facade and two-storey side wings, which was typical of the Baroque architecture of the time. After the fire in 1857, there was a classical reconstruction according to the design of Kaspar Predák, which increased the southern facade by rizalite with arcades and added a fourth wing. This transformation preserved the original internal arrangement but added new elements to the exterior appearance of the lock.

The chateau passed through the hands of many owners who influenced its architectural development. After John of Kunvald, the fort became the property of the royal undertaker, and then in 1616 Alžběta Lobkovicová z Lobkovic bought it, which attached it to her estate, the Honorubes. In 1654 Klecany was sold to Adama Matthias from Tratmannsdorf and after that two other owners were replaced before the chateau in 1691 and the village bought Václav Vojtěch ze Šternberka. His continued construction led to a financial collapse, which led to the chateau being transferred to its creditors in 1713.

In 1727-1803 the chateau was owned by Count Gallas and Clam-Gallas. During this time Empress Marie Terezie stopped here twice in the years 1754 and 1757, which was an important event in the history of the chateau. The chateau was bought by the innkeeper František Vobořil in 1803. The chateau fell twice as a victim of a fire, the first time in 1827 and the second time in 1857, leading to a classical reconstruction.

Today the chateau Klecany is not only a monument to architecture, but also a witness to rich history. After the acquisition by a private company in the 1990s, the building and the chateau park were completely rebuilt. Although the chateau appeared in the real estate market in 2023, it failed to sell it. Its historical significance and architectural value make it a valuable monument worth visiting.
