The railway station Žatec is an important historical monument in the northern part of the city Žatec in the district of Louny. It is located on the border with the centre, separated from it by the Ohří River, and serves as a key transport hub on lines 123, 124 and 160. The building of the station is one of the few preserved examples of the universalised architecture of the Bustradic railway from the 19th century, which was designed for the uniform appearance of all stations on the network. Today it is a functional railway station with modernized platforms that connects regional and long distance connections.

The station was established in 1871-1873 as part of the line from Prague through Kladno and Rakovna to Chomutov, which connected mining areas of northern Bohemia. The operation on this line was launched by a private company Bustřehrad Railways (BEB), which also financed construction. The route was designed to allow for a rapid integration of industrial centres and to promote the economic development of the region. Žatec has thus become an important hub, allowing the transport of raw materials and products between Prague, Chomutov and other important cities.

Architecturally, the station is a typical example of the historical style that was common to railway buildings at the time. The main building was built according to the design of architect Josef Prála, who created a universalized form of stations for the Bustěhrad railway. The building is walled, with typical elements of 19th century railway architecture such as symmetric axes and functionality. In 1902 Adolf Schrayer added a restaurant pavilion and a covered staircase that improved access to the lobby. This adjustment corresponded to the trends in the railway architecture at the time, when the emphasis was on passenger comfort.

The station's ownership has changed several times over the years. From 1871 to 1884, it was operated by the Bushkhrady Railway (BEB). In 1884 the company was nationalized and the operation was taken over by the Imperial-Royal State Railways (kkStB). After the creation of Czechoslovakia in 1918, the Czechoslovak State Railways took over. In 1923, the Bustřehrad railway was nationalized, which meant that the entire network, including the station Žatec, was under one administration.

Key events include opening the station in 1871 as part of the Praha-Chomutov line. In 1873 the station was then connected to the Plzeň railway company Plzeň-March railway (EPPK), which led to the formation of station Žatec west. These connections have significantly affected transport connections in the region and have encouraged economic development. Another important event was the reconstruction of platforms in 2017, which improved the safety and comfort of passengers.

Today the station Žatec is a functional transport hub with four platforms serving both regional and remote connections. In the vicinity of the station there is a city bus station, which is part of the transport junction. The station is also an important transport hub, because part of the line from Kadani- Prunéřov to Obrnice is electrified, which allows better connection to other electrified lines in the region.

The railway station Žatec is not only an important transport hub, but also a historical monument that reflects the development of railways in the 19th century. Its architecture and importance for the regional economy make it an interesting place to visit. For tourists interested in the history of railways and industrial development, the station Žatec represents a valuable example of technical and architectural heritage. It is worth visiting it not only for its historical value, but also for the possibility of knowing an important part of the transport infrastructure of northern Bohemia.

Welcome to railway station Žatec!

You stand in front of one of the most important node stations in northern Bohemia, a place where people, trains and history intersect. In front of you is a building that since 1873 testifies to the time when the railway began to shape the life not only of this city but of the whole area. Her walls carry the memory of a time when trains were starting to run out of her and today they invite you to meet her.

Let's look at its origin. The station Žatec was established between 1871 and 1873 as part of an important track connecting Prague through Kladno and Rakovnik to Chomutov. This trip was intended to connect mining areas of northern Bohemia and facilitate the transport of mineral goods. In 1873 the line to Pilsen joined it, which also created the station Žatec west. The building that you see is a typical example of the unified architecture of the Bustradic Railways - a network that connected whole regions in the nineteenth century. Its simple but functional style was designed to serve all stations on this track.

Look carefully at the facade. You'll notice from the outside that the building has classical features that were typical for the time being. Later, in 1902, it underwent modifications - a restaurant pavilion and a covered staircase were added here, which provided additional practical and aesthetics to the building. These changes reflect the evolution of life around the station. In 2017, the reconstruction of the platform, which preserved its original character, was completed but also adapted to the needs of today's passengers.

Now pay attention to details that may surprise you. This station is one of the rare preserved examples of the unified architecture of the Bustradic railway. Most of the buildings were either rebuilt or demolished, so Žatec is one of the few places where you can see what the stations looked like in the nineteenth century. Its simplicity and functionality speak of a time when it was built for people's needs, not for pomp.

Who was behind her creation? The authors of the project were architects Josef Chvála and Adolf Schrayer, whose names are associated with many important constructions of the time. Unfortunately, the historical figures that were directly linked to this station are not known. But here you can still feel their legacy - every stone, every beam carries a trace of the work and effort of those who built it.

Interesting thing that may surprise you: Žatec was a key hub for transporting minerals from nearby mines. Trains brought in not only coal and ore, but also people who came here to work. Their stories were reflected in the daily life of the city, and today, when you're standing in front of this building, you can imagine what the voices of passengers sounded like, how the trains started and how the fates of many generations met.

There's a place in front of you that connects the past to the present. If you feel like it, take a walk on the platforms, take a look at the facade and imagine how everything looked here over 150 years ago. This station is not just a building - it is part of history that can inspire you how life has changed and how the railway has affected the entire region.

Thank you for taking the time to visit this place. Whether you are a lover of history, architecture or just a traveler, we hope this station has brought you new experiences and experiences. If you want to learn more, visit the Museum in Žatci or take a look at other sights nearby. And when you leave, remember that right here in front of you was a building that had been connecting people and history for over a hundred years.

Good trip and we'll meet again at the next historic place!

Seasonal recommendations

Ranní slunce jemně osvětluje architekturu budovy, což vytváří příjemnou atmosféru pro procházku. Doporučujeme obléknout si více vrstev oblečení, protože počasí bývá proměnlivé. Nejlepší je přijet v dopoledních hodinách, kdy je klid a vzduch nejčistší.

The summer season brings intense light and hot air, which play perons. The atmosphere is full of energy and movement, typical of the main holiday season. Due to high temperatures, select light and breathable substances. To avoid the biggest crowds and the morning heat, visitors should plan their arrival very early in the morning.

In the autumn, the surroundings of the station turn into golden tones and morning fog gives the place a mysterious touch. Lighting is softer and shadows longer, which is ideal for capturing the details of the construction. It's practical to carry a waterproof jacket and tight shoes. There are fewer visitors at this time, so there is a pleasant peace.

In the winter, the monument is soothed and calm, especially if the perons cover the layer of snow. The contrast of the white landscape and darker elements of the construction creates a unique visual impression. It is necessary to wear very warm clothes, gloves and a hat. We recommend a visit at the time of the highest sun because the days are short and darkness comes soon.
