The railway viaduct in Novina, located in the part of the municipality of Kryštofovo Údolí in Liberec district, is a technical monument registered in the Central list of real cultural monuments of the Czech Republic. Viadukt is part of the railway line Liberec - Česká Lípa and stands out for its historical and technological importance, and was built as a key element of the North Bohemian transverse. This monument is remarkable not only by its architecture and history, but also by serving to transport coal from the subcircling mountain mines.

The creation of the viaduct was inspired by the need for faster transport of raw materials, especially coal, to northern Bohemia. In 1898 the construction of the last section of the transverse mill Mimoň - Upper Rosodol began, which was completed in 1900. The Viaduct was used to overcome the Jedžitský Ridge and was part of the section between Křižany and Novina. Its construction also included the construction of an 802-metre long Jedrovský tunnel, which preceded the viaduct. The Viaduct was built under the leadership of Herrmann Rosche and implemented by the construction company Brüder Redlich & Berger from Vienna.

The viaduct is built in an arc with a radius of 235 metres, open towards the northwest. The Viaduct has fourteen semicircular arches with a radius of 12 metres and its height is 29,5 meters. Each of the arches is equipped with an opening for water drain. The materials used to build the bridge were the quarry stone diorite and the granite of Liberec. The diorite was extracted during the embossing of the Jested Tunnel, while granite was used for tiles and parapets.

Viaduct became part of the technical monument due to its historical importance and architectural design. After the completion of the viaduct in 1900, the first train was passed after it on 16 September of the same year, even though it only reached the Upper Rossodol for reconstruction of the Liberec railway station. The North Bohemian Transverse Collation took place on 23 November 1903, which showed the successful completion of the project.

Today the viaduct in Novina is not only a technical monument, but also a natural and historical place worth visiting. Its architecture and history are a testament to industrial development in Bohemia in the early 20th century. Viaduct is accessible for tourists who want to discover a unique combination of techniques and history in the beautiful landscape of Kryštof Valley.

The Viaduct in Novina is not only a monument to the past, but also an inspiration for future generations. Its existence recalls the importance of innovation and technological progress in the development of society. Visiting this place offers a unique opportunity to explore the history of railway transport and appreciate the architectural beauty that has overcome the challenges of its time.

Welcome to Kryštof Valley, where you will now look at one of the most famous technical monuments of our region - železniční viadukt v Novině. You stand before a huge piece of engineering that proudly flees over the valley and controls the landscape with its impressive presence. Under your feet, the railway line extends, while the arches of the bridge lead you to the sky.

Let's dive into the history of this masterpiece. The Viaduct was built during the last decades of the 19th century as part of the North Bohemian Transverse. The aim of this magnificent infrastructure was to connect the northern part of the Czech Republic to the centre of the country, which enabled more efficient transport of coal from the subcircling mountain mines. The beginning of the construction of the last section of the transverse plant began in 1898, and already two years later, namely 16 September 1900, the first train was admitted to this bridge. The entire work was officially co-awarded on November 23, 1903.

The architect of this impressive viaduct was Herrmann Rosche, whose visionary plan exceeded not only the topographic challenges, but also the technological limitations of the time. Look up and you'll see 14 semicircular arches with a 12 meter span each. These arches form a bridge that rises to a height of 29,5 meters above the ground and is built into an arc with a radius of 235 meters. Note the careful use of the quarry stones - diorite from the Jedrovský Tunnel along with the Liberec granite, which gives the bridge its irresistible solid and beauty.

Although specific figures associated with the construction of the viaduct have remained less familiar in history, their work persists as evidence of technical progress and courage. Every stone of this bridge tells the story of the effort that has been made to implement it.

The interesting thing is that this viaduct not only served the economic development of the region by allowing coal to be transported, but also meant an engineering triumph over natural barriers. The Jested ridge, which was an insurmountable obstacle to the railway, was now just another chapter in the history of the bridge.

We recommend taking the time to explore this masterpiece and enjoy views from the surrounding pavements where you can fully appreciate its size and importance. Whether your journey is short or long, železniční viadukt v Novině will be a permanent witness to the history and technology that shaped our day.

Thanks for the tour of this impressive place. We hope this guide inspired you to further discover and appreciate the historical monuments of our country.
