The Vapenice Pavilion is located south of the village Březníka in the forest on the ridge above the left bank of the river Záslava, in the nature reserve of the Valley Závaly and Chvojnice. It is part of an interesting set of hunting structures, which was built around the hunting chateau built on Wolf Hill in 1830. The same period includes other buildings - Babylonian lookout tower near Kramolín or Gloriet near Sedlce. The pavilion was visible from the chateau terrace and thus formed part of a sophisticated landscape plan.

The construction is probably from the second quarter of the 19th century. Henry Wilhelm Haugwitz may have been the contractor, although it has not yet been documented. The author of the design remains unknown, but the construction refers to the work of Josef Kornhäusel, the creator of the summer chateau near Lednice and Valtice or the chateau in Jinošov.

Architectural is the construction of a rectangular plan with massive stone walls approximately 6 to 7 metres high. The west wall is broken by two sealed entrances that allowed hunters to enter on horseback. A characteristic element is the crown ledge from the lower part, which is decorated with broken crystalline limestone coming from a nearby Kralic branch - the pavilion was named after this material. Just as decorative was the stone lining of the entrances. The building was originally plastered and covered with shingles tent roof with small tower with bell.

The pavilion had a practical purpose - it was used to store and hang hunted game, to rest hunters during their activities and to refresh them. In 1980, the roof burned down and since then, the building has remained unguarded. It is in this torsional form - without a roof but with preserved massive walls - that it has been protected since 2025. In the future, the restoration of the pavilion according to the original documentation is envisaged, which will ensure the conservation of the architecturally valuable building.

The pavilion can be reached on unmarked forest paths from Březníka is heading south towards the river Celebra, or from the valley of the Festival itself. The visitor will experience an authentic demonstration of 19th century rural construction and an atmosphere of abandoned hunting economy.

The Hunting Pavilion Vápenice is a ruin in the forest south of Březník in the Třebíč region. It stands on a ridge above the left bank of the Oslava River, in the Údolí Oslavy a Chvojnice nature reserve. Since 2025, it has been protected as a cultural monument.

The pavilion belonged to an extensive hunting ground that was part of a hunting lodge on Vlčí kopec. This lodge was built in 1830. Following it, other related structures were built in the surrounding area, such as the Babylon lookout tower near Kramolín or the Gloriet near Sedlce. Later, the Vápenice pavilion became part of this ensemble. It was visible from the terrace of the hunting lodge on Vlčí kopec.

It was built probably in the second quarter of the nineteenth century. The builder could have been Heinrich Wilhelm Haugwitz, but this has not yet been documented. The design was most likely created by an unknown architect. However, this architect drew inspiration from the work of Josef Kornhäusel, the author of the castle in Jinošov or the summer houses near Lednice and Valtice.

The structure has a rectangular floor plan and massive stone walls. It reaches a height of approximately six to seven meters. In the western wall are two vaulted entrances through which hunters could ride on horseback. Inside, hunted game was stored and hung up. The pavilion also served as a resting place and refreshment station for hunters.

A striking feature is the crown cornice made of broken crystalline limestone. The entrances were decorated similarly. The limestone comes from the Kralic game preserve, and the pavilion got its name from it. The building was plastered both outside and inside. It was covered with a shingled tent roof with a small tower with a bell. The roof burned in 1980 and since then the pavilion has been without a roof.

The structure is architecturally valuable and is connected with other monuments in the area. It is expected to be restored in the future according to the original documentation. This is also why the monument protection does not apply to today's ruin as such, but to the pavilion in its original form.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit the ruin of Limestone is in spring or autumn. In these times nature is the most beautiful around - flowering meadows or golden autumn leaves create a picturesque background for historical construction. The sunny morning is ideal for walking, because the shadows of the ruins are short and the light illuminates the details of the stone remains better. Avoid hot summer days when the forest can be quite hot and dry.

It is recommended to arrive on the asphalt road from the village Březník, which leads directly to the forest edge. Public transport is a place available, but the current connection needs to be checked in the traffic search engine. The ruin is found in the forest, so comfortable shoes and possibly umbrella should not be forgotten.

When visiting, wear a comfortable shoe because the road to the ruin leads mainly to a forest trail with a slight climb. It is also convenient to carry a small bag of water, because it is not always easy to find a source of drinking water in the forest. If you are planning a longer stay, bring lunch or refreshments as there is no restaurant nearby. In winter, don't forget to wear warmer clothes because the forest can be cold even on a sunny day.

The ruin of Vapenice offers several interesting places for photography. The best light and compositions are on the west side where the sun illuminates the remains of the stone structure when the sun leaves. The morning clock is ideal for photos with bright light and short shadows. If you want to capture the surroundings, focus on the forested valley of the Festival River behind the ruins or on the contrast between the remains of the building and the greenery. In winter the atmosphere can be even more dramatic thanks to snow and shiny surfaces.

In the vicinity of the ruins of Dapenice there are several interesting places worth visiting within 30 minutes' drive. The hunting lodge on Wolf Hill from 1830 is another interesting place to view the surrounding countryside. The Babylon View at Kramolín and Gloriet at Sedce are other attractions that will provide you with stunning views of the Highlands. All these locations are easily accessible by car and offer an opportunity for hiking.

For families with children a visit to the ruin of Liposna is a great opportunity to discover and play. Children can see the remains of the old building and talk about its origin. In the surroundings it is possible to organize simple natural games such as collecting interesting stones or leaves. The hunting lodge on Wolf Hill can also be interesting for children because it offers space for free movement and discovery.
